Unfinished: Fortnite - Battle Royale (01/14/2018)

I might be in the minority here but I enjoy the main game more than the Battle Royale mode that this offers.

I've played quite a bit of both and Fortnite just lacks all the end-game tension that makes PUBG great for me.

Between the stylized graphics that make the other players easy to see and the structure-building which makes it plain obvious, it then mostly comes down to a shootout and gunplay is not this game's strength.

Not bad for a free game, but I don't think I would pay for it.

So it's PUBG for a younger, less skilled, audience with no vehicles, no customization, and free. If it weren't for that last thing this game would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. Also is Dan racist to games lol He said "doesn't like what certain games look like because of where they came from" what?!

Wow these guys are bad at this...

Abby downing Dan? Wah?

They really focused on the building and mining for materials way too much when you need to just grab some loot quickly.

I have been playing this non-stop since October and still can't get enough. Ignoring the fact that it's a complete copy, the aesthetics, building mechanics, and attention to detail really set this apart. Above all that though, the absolute dedication that Epic has to bettering the product with fixes and new features every single week is incredible.

Fuck Epic, i love when a giant established company steals an idea that they never could have focus tested out themselves, and then puts it out for free to undercut competitors while staying solvent because they have the excess cash to burn...

I would have enjoyed this game more but that map feels real tiny after playing pubg, you can almost parachute to anywhere in the map no matter the trajectory of the plane, and you’re almost guaranteed to have company wherever you land.

It's the blatantness of just lifting PUBG and dropping it into your own product, it just leaves a bad taste. Esp when that product was and is a clusterfort without the lift. On the other hand, ascribing romanticised feelings to video game products over inspiration and ownership of design mechanics is dumb, let the market decide.

Initially I held no interest for this game either but the building mechanics and faster, more arcadey gameplay style compared to pubg make it a nice change of pace. It's a lot more fun to play than just watching a couple of streams, so give it a try since it's free.

Doesn't quite get the heart racing like the top 10 in pubg though, guess it just doesn't build the same kind of tension.

The insane improvisational strategies people come up with in this game have been really fun. Like normally I don't give a shit about building mechanics etc., but it instead enables you an out if ever you get trapped. Like if you're trapped in a building and people are coming for you, you can smash through the opposite wall and place another one behind you to enable an escape. One time we were trapped in a house, but we got to the top of the building and built this bridge suspended in mid-air that got us way farther than I ever thought we could've gotten.

It makes for some really creative and fun moments. Really impressed by this twist on the formula.

Something about this looks procedurally generated, making me think this game would be best if it was. That would place everyone on an equal advantage as everyone is having to improvise with each game instead of knowing exactly where to go. Map familiarity often gives advantage to fanatics in a MP game that ruins the casual player's experience. PUBG alleviates this a little bit with random weapon and vehicle drops, but tactics don't really change too much once you know where all the cover, best routes, and likely weapon drops are.

I cancelled my subscription because of Abby, it’s like she doesn’t care anymore about anything in the videos, it’s like she’s trying to be funny but just can’t. It’s not personal, I’m giving some constructive feedback on the way they present themselves in the videos, which is not appealing at all, more comments below can confirm this. Same thing with Brad playing stealth games or not caring about at least learning the basics of a game before going in a quick look... I have no desire to be a subscriber anymore and I hate being like this, but I guess no one will ever make single person happy with content.

Tried this after Dan's tweet about it. I might be too used to PUBG at this point. I was trying to alt-look around me and was trying to prone but couldn't and realized that you can't do either of those. And finding a game takes minutes longer in this which actually really impacts the "oh that's ok if I died, I can just hop into the next one right away" feel of it for me. And I found none of the bush costumes or all explosive modes that were talked about. It probably is fun but I'm getting none of it right now.

As for the video, kind of surprised Dan didn't build walls up right away upon getting shot by those 2 dudes in the first game since they were mining so much more than looting and had been practicing it with Abby for the past few minutes.

If McDonalds took your favorite local burger place's recipe and sold it at every store, and at a store right across the street from your favorite local burger place, that would be shitty. They're probably within their rights, they're just assholes, they could have done more to make it their own. Adding wall-building is not making it your own.

Except, you know, the Battle Royale formula has not been invented by the PUBG dev. Hell, they have not even put their own spin on it.

What is happening here is very similar to the Dota style games, much like the zombie shooters before it, the minecraft builders before that and the shooter with progressions elements that came before all these.

These are basic gameplay mechanics. No one screamed bloody murder then, why do so now?

If I didn't know what this was going in I could have watched the first couple minutes (lobby/waiting room/parachuting onto the map) and thought was another chinese clone game, like the Overwatch ones we saw a while ago.

@filipeg165: They have always done the thing of one person manning the Quick Look who has played it before, in this case being Dan, and the other person going in fresh and learning the ropes, in this case being Abby. I don't see how this is so different from any of the hundreds of other QLs were Jeff, Brad, Vinny, Alex or anyone else plays a game in a QL for the first time.

It's a personality-driven site. Always has been. If you don't like the personalities, then you made the right decision. There are plenty of streaming channels you can find for people who want to see video game pros playing video games.

This is totally a ripoff of PUBG because it's the thing at the moment, sure, but. You guys know that battle royale/hunger games style games have been around for a long-ass time? I used to play those all the time on modded Minecraft servers for gods' sake. Reducing circle and all.

I dunno, fully destructible environments on top of being able to build your own fortifications/distractions/repair buildings is a pretty fucking huge spin on the formula. A lot more than anything PUBG brought to the table.

Here's what PUBG added: popularity.

Literally nothing else.

Last time I played Fortnite it was anything but polished and felt like the sort of mess that comes out of an ambitious first time dev. The shooting feels like ass, even on a controller. The artstyle is well implemented but kind of the same generic stylized look every other indie game seems to adopt. The interface was a mess. Seems weird that Dan thinks just having a stylized look makes it seem polished, but maybe I misunderstood him.

This game just kinda disappointed me in general. Feels bad, the structure isnt what I hoped for, and the progression is iffy imo. Adding battle royale doesnt seem like it'll change my mind.

@lucidique: It's more than base mechanics. Details like the warm up where everyone runs around during the "warmup," the way parachuting works, the map, etc. Regardless of who invented what, some of this seems more like a mod than a fully fleshed out, seperate concept. Someone said "how about pubg with shitty shooting but also you can build?"

Denying that this is just taking the particular formula of pubg to adapt it to fortnite is ignoring what Epic themselves said about this thing.

Disturbing pattern of behavior, but at least Dan didn't say something blatantly racist like "PCs play games better than consoles." I don't know what I'd think if Dan turned out to be a closeted PC supremacist.

can we stop saying PUBG clone when there have been several BR games that existed far before PUBG did(no not counting arma mods) its rather silly.
