Unfinished: Fortnite - Battle Royale (01/14/2018)

Fortnite's Battle Royale has everything you could want: whimsy, crafting, and PUBG.

At least two people have commented on Abby mistaking Dan for an enemy player and killing him as some extremely negative thing - as if nobody else on this very site did the exact same thing while playing PUBG and people lots their minds at how hilarious it was. That has never happened more than once ever before, no sir.

Dan also mistook an enemy for Abby and didn't attack that player when they landed together in the building attached to the maze. Someone please remove both their licences to play video games on the internet as this just won't do.

I own Fortnite PVE on PC due to getting a PS4 download included. I decided to finally give BR Fortnite a chance after this quicklook only to find out if you've ever played on PC/PS4 and try to log into Xbox it denies you access stating you don't own the version. (yes free one) If you've ever played on Xbox you can't play on PC and PS4 with same account. What a joke! They claim it's Xbox's fault but there have been plenty of Cross platform games before. Their official customer support even states the only solution is create a new Email and attach you're none functioning platform to the new email for BR. What year are we in!?!?!

So it's PUBG for a younger, less skilled, audience with no vehicles, no customization, and free. If it weren't for that last thing this game would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. Also is Dan racist to games lol He said "doesn't like what certain games look like because of where they came from" what?!

Dan isn't racist, he's referring to how PUBG looks and runs like DAYZ because it is literally a mod of that game.

@mikemcn: This is like when people think League of Legends should sue other MOBAs. PUBG was no where near the first, just (currently) the most popular.

Fuck Epic, i love when a giant established company steals an idea that they never could have focus tested out themselves, and then puts it out for free to undercut competitors while staying solvent because they have the excess cash to burn...

I feel so bad for PUBG, you know the game backed by a huge foreign publisher. The game that has made a metric fuck ton of cash. They are really struggling because of Fortnite.

@asmo917: Man, that totally sucks because through no fault of your own you picked the absolute worst day to start playing Fortnite. Yesterday they had a bunch of issues that I had never seen before in the months I've been playing. The Fortnite team interacts with the community a lot on the Fortnite subreddit and they called out the queue thing you experienced as a glitch, and it is now fixed.

I can understand you being turned off of Fortnite because of this bad experience, but if you're still interested in the game I recommend you giving it another shot. It almost always runs quite smoothly with very little issues like the ones that were happening yesterday.

@benjaminolson: That's promising. I actually tried again a few hours later and had a MUCH smoother experience. Logged in with my Epic account easily, got right to the dashboard, and got into matches super quickly. The actual game was about what I expected - the feel of PUBG but somehow lower stakes but a different kind of high tension. I frequently found myself in the Build menu when I meant to do something else (crouch maybe?) due to years of TPS conditioning, and that's on me. I also prioritized finding weapons over gathering materials but still tried to do both, with mixed results. I ended up playing 7 solo rounds (I had a daily quest to play 7 rounds and thought "what the hell?") got 1 kill, and still feel like I don't quite grok the gameplay loop like I do in PUBG, but I'm definitely going to keep trying for a bit to see if I get better.

People who are discounting PUBG just because it wasn't "first" aren't getting it. Shooter for a long time have aped COD. Was COD the first shooter? Nope. The first multiplayer shooter? Nope. Did COD totally reinvent the mechanics of shooting? Not really. They did add some features, and the one important super-key thing: feel. Their games play well; it is fun to shoot; people enjoy playing those games. Was Goldeneye a great game? Sure, but people moved on to the better thing once that was developed.

Fortnite absolutely "adds more" to the Battle Royale concept with its building mechanics. I don't begrudge it any of that. Both of these early access games generally lack polish (even after 1.0 release for PUBG and cheater fake-early-access "retail release" Fortnite). But from this comment section, it's clear that even for people who enjoy fortnite, PUBG takes it for feel and tension. That's more than just mechanics or features, and that's why (along with a healthy helping of luck and who-knows-what) this one has blown up the scene so dramatically, where previous battle royales just haven't.

Plus, fast following may be legal, but it's still kinda messed up. No one here would defend the crappy game clones that pop up all over the mobile and steam stores, right? I think Epic has certainly added their own spin to this, beyond what those games do. But, just because it's not the "first" in the line, doesn't mean copying it is fair game. (And, when your timers match up with the popular game.. then I think it's pretty obvious)

I didn't say they were struggling, i'm saying the people who made Gears of War can do better than taking Battlegrounds and plugging it into an existing game with building mechanics.

I'm not usually one to complain about people playing video games badly in a casual setting, but...

MAN.

If you think PUBG runs like DayZ then please go back and play it instead of making statements that look ludicrous to those of us that have played both...

PUBG looks like the pinnacle of game design compared to DayZ.

Wish we could have gotten Brad in on this QL, then we really could have seen the "these guys stink at games" crowd lose their shit.

@jesus_phish:

I'm not even suggesting something as crazy as that, didn't realise we had gamer licenses?

I just find it really surprising that people playing games for a living kinda suck so badly at them. I'm not expecting pro levels of gaming from them, just a basic understanding and being able to tell what is happening in the game.

Presenting the game as such puts it in a bad light as it's showing the gameplay mechanics poorly.

@indure: Huh? No. PUBG isn't a mod of anything. It was built from the ground up on the Unreal Engine.

@jesus_phish: Indeed. What Vinny did was far, far worse (wiping out his own squad while fighting a separate squad, all with a friendly fire warning in the middle of his screen). At least Abby had the decency to revive Dan. Vinny just finished off his knocked out teammates while the crawled around on the ground.

The smaller scale is kind of a bummer, but overall looks like a lot more fun and playable than PUBG, which goes hot and cold really easily. Seems like a decent thing to jump into.

Which is funny considering he's pretty fucking decent at PUBG (way better than I'd ever be at it, for sure).

People also like to pointedly nitpick, so hard that they can never see the forest for the trees (make one silly mistake while the rest of their play is fine, not that it would bug me too much anyway...)

Downloading this now, seems fun and full of personality.

Also, disappointed but unsurprised to see all the complaining about Abby in the comments for what feels like the umpteenth time. Get over y'all's collective gynophobia.

I'm bummed out they didn't spend more time spectating after losing. If you're going to talk about how the end-game is people building forts, stick around and spectate the end-game at least once so we can see it!

@lucidique: I have yes, and PUBG has issues but its no worse than any other game of its kind. Fortnite on the other hand was not an enjoyable experience at any level beyond a pretty well realized building mechanic, which isn't original just refined, like Pubg's main selling points.

PUBG wasn't especially unstable for me in the later period of it's development, fortnite ran and controlled mediocre-poorly for me. It was not fun in the slightest for me. PUBG was fun even the time I tried to run it on an i5 mobile chip. If given the choice between free with crappy gameplay in my view vs not free but feels like a quality game moment to moment I'mma take that.

Both games have issues. Fortnite is still not at 1.0 and it shows. I know the shooting is a major sticking point for the playerbase so i'm not just an outlier who doesnt like how it feels. I don't know how much their updated shooting model will help but as it is I don't like interacting with the game at that level and that's kind of key for me.

This is also just my experience. For many players fortnite will appeal more, and i recognize that. I just think you sound a bit biased because of your preference. Most of your issues with PUBG are present in fortnite and others exist that PUBG does not have and vis versa.

Fortnite could easily improve to the point where I would like the game, but my early impressions were that it needed a lot more work, especially if I am going to have fun shooting things.
