I'm cool with Limbo being his #1, everyone is entitled to his own opinion (and maybe he didn't play some of the other blockbusters, just like me) but it continues to be infuriating to hear "This is true art!"

Weird how every time someone brings up games as art, what that person likes is art, while whatever he dislikes isn't art.  It perpetuates the notion that "It's art because I like it, I like it because it's art!"

If we're thinking of art as, say, paintings or drawings or architecture, then do you not find bad paintings?  Bad architecture?  All games are art, and all creation is art.  The term "art" does not cater to the whim of whomever speaks of it.  We've gotten to the point that calling things art is this high-brow, obnoxious, West-Coast-liberal-asshole kind of thing that really has nothing to do with the object itself.  You walk into a museum and automatically assume that the laziest object in the room (usually a ball in a cup that somehow symbolizes abortion) is truly the best work in the entire world.  Everyone's too scared to walk into an art exhibit and say "ITS SHIT ITS ALL SHIT AAAAAAAGH"  To Alex, and many others at Whiskey Media and many other sites, sadly, merely use "art" as mindless justification for whatever they like most.

Limbo has artistic qualities, yes, because it is art.  So are all other games.  We are allowed to have our own opinions about artistic work; both absolute love and absolute hate.  Jeff previously spoke that people who call games art are just trying to be pompous asses about what they like, and that's what Alex's talk about Limbo was.  But even then, Jeff was incorrect.  By definition, every game, every song, every movie, every play, every ballet, and every wrestling match is art.  We can choose to like or dislike any one of them on whatever grounds we please, but we cannot alter a word to make it revolve solely around ourselves.  If I argue that this is art, and you argue that that is art, and a third person walks in and says that their third option is the real art, etcetera infinity, then either nothing is art or everything is.  The answer is the latter.

I don't get it, I don't find that kirby game adorable or cute, kirby itself either.
I find a lot of things adorable and I get the feeling they explain but that game just does absolutely nothing.

@lolak47: You're joking right? I'm not saying you have to like it but it was clearly a game. If it really is your contention that it sucks monkey balls perhaps you could provide a reason? What did you find so bad about it?

Fucking great video.  Love me some Navarro.  Can't believe he rated Kirby higher than Galaxy 2, but alas I haven't played Kirby yet so I guess I'll shut up.  :-)

" This was like watching the Oscars, where the top movie is some depressing arthouse flick few people have heard of. I wuv all the Whiskey Media folks, including Alex "The REAL Snide" Navarro. But a number of these selections were perplexing, including Limbo. I liked it, but #1 game of the year? Only if you haven't played that many games, as far as I'm concerned.  I'm looking forward to seeing how the lists of the GB regulars compare. "

That was beautiful. Thank you, sir. :) While I agree that Limbo wouldn't be on my top 10 of 2010 list, it is nice to hear a differing opinion and I'm glad Alex is involved with this site as well as Screened.

Thank you for caring about my thoughts on Alex Navarro. It's great that people are wiling to take my opinion so seriously, that they feel obligated to post an angry message about it. Alex, you have a pretty loyal following. How many people are you putting it out for?
