Game of the Year 2013: Day One Recap

Okay this is Brad's best acting performance ever. Love it! :D

The rest didn't totally grab me, but the Rorie part was amazing.

And yet you still are here, so they must be doing something right.

I adore GB, and loved listening to the podcats; but man... I hope this doesn't become the theme for the entire week.

Glad to see the crew is keeping Ryan's tradition of parody GOTY presentations. Drew's list is nice, expect Gone Home. Very overrated.

Semi-naked 70's Rorie in a wig on the phone saying : "YOU'RE a pong-pong..." needs to be a t-shirt PRONTO.

I'm not going to lie, that was pretty weak. I usually like Giant Bomb's GOTY videos but man... I didn't like this one.

Oh, man. Wasn't quite sure what to make of the theme initially but damn, Brad, that's one awesome over the top performance! I'm very excited to see where this'll go. Very cool first day so far. Now I'm off to the podcast to find out how Last of Us won that category and against what competition.

The funny thing is 2011s "best looking game" looks better than this year's.

eh. Sometimes their style of "let's buy these costumes and we'll figure out the jokes while the camera's rolling" works, and sometimes it doesn't. I have a feeling that the theme this year is gaming throughout the decades. The crew's probably going to have an easier time riffing off of the 80's and 90's, so here's hoping that the content for those days is going to be better.

That was...OK. I thought the 70's bit was cute, and I got some chuckles out of the characters. Kind of hard to follow up how amazing last year was. The crew on the couch, going through the list, is weirdly awkward though. They seem super disinterested. Jeff has his "I'm interviewing a PR guy" voice on. Oh well.

This video's a good start and I'm excited to see where they go from here, but man, last years videos were really something else, it's crazy to expect that to be topped.

This was fantastic - but it really got on my nerves when Klepek decided "oh someone else's list, let me give my opinion about how I disagree". Thankfully Gerstmann gave him a look of doom. Klepek - don't be a douche.

When I played BioShock Infinite, the gameplay was like a breath of fresh air. Wide open arenas with multiple viewpoints, tons of different acting weapons, different vigors that can be combined, the skyhook, etc.

Meanwhile, practically everything else I played had super boring and tedious combat in comparison.

The Last of Us - Do the same two maneuvers over and over again, or engage in really clunky stealth until you are forced out of it.

Tomb Raider - Headshot two guys popping out of two obvious cover spots (using any weapon, they all feel the same), then two more will take their place. Add in the fact that your melee attack is useless for the first half in the game. Reminds me of Uncharted 1.

Assassin's Creed IV - You might as well just have turned them into quicktime events for the amount of thought you need to put into it.

And yet all I hear is how tedious the gameplay is in Infinite, the only game that seemed to embrace variety at all. I remain baffled.

Best possible use of Rorie. Love it.

Seeing as nobody on staff is a big JRPG fan and it was from very early this year, I think they absolutely forgot about Ni no Kuni. Whatever you may think about the gameplay, the visuals and design of that game are super top notch.

Finally, an assessment of Brothers I can agree with.

It's an adequate replacement for cutting yourself.

@kuddles: I haven't played TLOU but the thing all those three games have in common is optional stealth. That to me solves any problem that awful combat may impose on a game. I never really liked combat in AC games so that's why I mostly snuck around or ran away from combat. In Tomb Raider, the bow is super satisfying to use. In Infinite, there's so much combat and while it might've been good enough for an 8 hour game, it doesn't hold up for the length Infinite takes you to beat it. The shooting is just not satisfying enough and there's very little strategy or variety to it all.

I love that Bioshock got a nod for best story today, but none of them can remember major characters' motivations in this video.

The trap of "This is one of the best games ever" turning into *sniff* "I guess it was OK, if you don't like good games."

In terms of creepy, everything about that part of Bioshock Infinite is steeped in creep especially that bit at the very beginning with the 3 objects. Grosser than gross.

Was always gonna be hard to top last year. At least they tried.

Brad's acting also really BAD & improvisation even worse!!! You should write more, man.
