@thecitizenkaneofthings: I don't really think showing the obvious solution is good game design, i just think its necessary game design. Even then, you dont HAVE to show that the light is what keeps the girl underwater away, or that the torch is what keeps the dogs away - you're incredibly likely to do it yourself and discover that solution by your own accord which is always more satisfying than the game even hinting at it. In a game so limited, you're extremely likely to find the intended method.

I think an example where they mostly did this is when you happen to lead the automaton body into its own mind control device, and you see another automaton wake up and it being controlled through the first controlled guy. I didn't really expect that and it led to one of the more interesting puzzles.

I wish they had made more layers of puzzles with that, with a layer of control and dropping control where a single link of that chain being broken can lead to not being able to solve the puzzle and having to re-examine your steps. Thats actual problem solving and not just trial and error like the very first puzzle of the game. You're being chased, but the solution is stop in this abitrary spot and the guy doesn't catch you for some reason because if you enter the light of the car you die - puzzle 2, you're being chased by the pig so lead it one way then jump over or go back over the thing thats chasing you and lead it around. Puzzle 3 - you're being chased so use the one thing(light source) you have to lead it away so you can hit the button or buy enough time to pull the lever. And they recycle these so much but with just a new visual oddity that is supposed to make it interesting.

I liked the earthquake part because at least theres just some timing in the execution
Ultimately I think thats a neat way to show off a mechanic that isn't fun to do, its really easy to nail how to show what you're supposed to do when its that simple. I don't know if its just from playing other video games that do similar things, it just felt like a very obvious video game logic thing. When it breaks THIS hard just mechanically, removed from the atmosphere and visual style and all that, I can't be brought to care about any story.

@awkwardloser: multiplayer section was really tough..they're such different multiplayer experiences. They must have been attracted to the play styles attributed for the characters in Overwatch over Battlefield being a relatively "generic" and I mean that in a kind way, but just very, very well executed multiplayer setup. Its boots on the grounds done very well but it doesnt have the crazy movement or special moves or anything like that, but, Battlefield 1 has some really intense moments.

Once again, a nice overall list.

I'm glad Furi got some love. The soundtrack is definitely great, and not just the boss themes, but the music building up to each boss fight. It's also a great, Treasure like, bullet-hell game.

That moment during Inside was pretty interesting and had me wondering what is going on in the grand scheme of things. I didn't finish the The Witness because I had other games to play and didn't have the time to really focus on the puzzles, though I will probably go back and finish it. Shoutout to Alex for bringing up the opening to Mafia III, which is one of the most well directed and powerful openings in a video I've ever seen. I didn't own an Xbox 360 so I can't speak on that system, but I will say Mass Effect 2 got robbed. And Geometry Wars on PS4 is just as good as the one on Xbox360 if not better, yeah I said it. The first five minutes in Doom was cool, but not as mind blowing as you guys clearly thought it was.

And of course Overwatch is the best Multiplayer shooter of the year ( and GOTY, you know its true.), saying otherwise would have completely shot down these awards credibility. I can only imagine Titanfall 2's online offering being good, because I really liked that open beta when a lot of other people didn't and the full game version seems to be even better. But like I said in another thread, Overwatch is the modern day Ms. Pacman and Super Mario Bros. It's a phenomenon. At least there is the campaign for Titanfall 2.

The music in The Dancer fight reaching creciendo's as it shifts from phase to phase is absolutely breathtaking. For anyone who hasn't played dark souls 3 but appreciates classical music, go YouTube the dancer fight. It's absolutely beautiful

In fact, How is the SOUL OF CINDER FIGHT "ending of dark souls 3" not even in contention for best moment? It's the best boss fight of any game I've ever played

Maybe there's something wrong with the way my eyes are connected to my brain but every time I've tried to play Geometry Wars I quickly lose track of my ship and everything dissolves into a blur of neon.

I'm fine with every other twin stick shooter that's thrown at me.

Jeff has been ridiculously silly about Rez in this GOTY stuff it's cracked me up. Get over it dude.

It's just funny too since he isn't doing it with any humor and earlier in GOTY he shit on "Old Dan" when "Old Jeff", at his most stubborn and crazy, is unmatched in being grating and unreasonable. I find it funny to watch at least.

Yeah, with Dan I can genuinely laugh at him and basically go "oh you...".

Jeff is way more pubescent when he's being 'adamant' about a game, and if he were at the table of the deliberations of our site, his shit wouldn't fly :P

EDIT: Also, Vinny is totally right about Geometry Wars being one of the few fun games on Xbox Arcade, and that's why it's being remembered so fondly.

I feel like being bad at GOW4 competitive play isn't a good reason to say the multiplayer is terrible. It might not be something you like but they just dismissive it entirely. Seems weird from a normally pretty thoughtful group of people. Gears 4 is one of the MOST complete packages of the year.

@mitchuation: Did anyone besides Brad even beat Dark Souls 3?

I thought Jason was the only other person who played a significant amount of it, and didn't he give up after losing his save?

I'm not sure there is anybody on staff who is a big fan of the Souls series now that Austin is gone.

THERE WAS NO CONTROLLER SUPPORT ON PC FOR MASS EFFECT 2! It was also the BEST game of last generation. Goddammit.

Ah, well. It won GotY when it mattered. Cos Red Dead categorically ain't all that.

I came to the comments specifically looking if anyone else thought it was weird that they all seemed to completely hate gears competitive multiplayer.

EDIT: Also I like Geometry Wars 2 better than 1, and Mass Effect 1 better than 2 lol.

@kishinfoulux: @leafthehero: The soundtrack is excellent in FFXV but as others have pointed out similarly for No Man's Sky, the implementation is severely lacking and unfortunately the shitty cutscenes and overall story presentation of FFXV really does it a disservice.

Titanfall 2 got snubbed. I agree With Jeff about the multiplayer, but at least it got a mention there. The SERE kit moment getting cut was highway robbery, that moment empowered the player so much, it just felt so good chaining the slides, wall runs, and smart pistol murdering.

In regards to the other moments, I almost immediately found the world puzzles in The Witness, so while cool, it didn't stand out to me.

Inside's moment though was all sorts of flat for me, it was just a weird moment that never really paid off. I looked up explanations of the story afterwards and with that knowledge that moment clicks more but it was still rather non-profound.

I'm super glad that the ruins section in Abzû at least got a shoutout during Best Moment - I thought it was impactful in some of the same ways the +1 puzzles in The Witness were impactful. Like, it took me getting halfway through that first open area and stumbling into an Elasmosaurus that was just swimming around to figure out what was going on with that part of the game, and that very natural, unscripted realization was fucking awesome.

I'm a little torn on those puzzles in the Witness cause on one hand, that sounds cool (never played it) but I wonder how much of an impact those will be if you knew of them beforehand and started playing the game knowing that stuff was in the game versus a blind run and going whoa wtf you can do that?

Still haven't played everything from this year but if I had to pick the top 5 in no order from a list of 2016, all platforms, again, in no order:

Pokemon Go

Overwatch

Doom

Hitman

The Witness or Inside

All games I associate with 2016 and unending talk about them from gamers, industry, media outlets, etc.

Go google "2016 video games" and give yourself a headache. Too many great games. Really difficult this year. Had a blast playing The Division, Infinite Warfare's campaign. Battlefield 1 was awesome for me for just pure multiplayer chaos. Mafia 3, Batman Telltale, both enjoyable as well, if not perfect. And finally Forza Horizon 3 is now my go-to driving game, maybe my favorite driving game ever. Incredible year, and that's just from the little slice of games I got to play.

I can't believe Titanfall 2 got snubbed in best moment. That is absolute garbage. Doom's soundtrack was incredible musically, it added so much to the game experience and was a GOOD METAL ALBUM, snubbed. This was such a frustrating episode to listen to. Overwatch is fun but it's just an update of an existing FPS (Team Fortress 2). Titanfall 2 is defining it's own style which is a mix between hyper fast pace and slow and methodical. Very frustrating listen. Not too mention Alex confesses he's never played ME2 and "doesn't like bioware".

I think getting both Titanfall moments cut from the list is adequate punishment for Jeff for pushing not even the best Burnout game onto that 360 list. It really bums me out how much Jeff hates Inside and RDR, two great games.

You know, after all this time I find it very hard to believe that Alex has never played Mass Effect 2. It seems nuts. Like, he has to have a copy of it by now, right? Otherwise he would've played it. I imagine that you can probably find that game for amazingly cheap these days, especially on PC. Maybe we should have someone send Alex a copy of Mass Effect 2.

I was really surprised at Jeff's attitude toward INSIDE. It's okay to not like the game, but I feel that his desire to just completely dismiss the significance of that scene is just plain wrong. The game changes a lot over time, with the game essentially requiring you to apply the game play mechanics that you had access to at the beginning of the game to new things, whether it's the sub or other machinery...even the thing that you turn into or become a part of at the end. The fact that the game clearly trusts you at that point to put all of that together and adapt to each new section is really cool, in my opinion.

Honestly, I haven't been that impressed by a game since first playing Out of This World (now better known as Another World) back in the mid-90s.

What was that ending? Everyone except Jeff picked Doom for best moment. Jeff said Witness for the win and it was immediately proceeded by everyone else siding with Doom. First it was Dan, then Vinny, then Alex and Jason, then Brad, and after a long pause Drew cast the final vote for Doom. Then suddenly it's decided and Witness is bolded.

I love the environmental puzzles in The Witness. I jumped in my seat with shock when I first discovered it. It was amazing and picking between Witness and Doom I would have picked Witness. But everyone but Jeff sided with Doom. I don't understand how this works.

@thisisdell: Because Day One, Day Two, etc, does not correspond to the days recordings took place. They keep going and reset, probably getting through 2 or 3 in one day. This is also a good reason why they're taking frequent breaks.

Damn shit got tense during the Inside discussion. Jeff actually got mad and the whole conversation got awkward as hell for a few minutes.

I respect the hell out of Jeff, but I love that he can't just force his opinions through when the whole table is against him. For a guy who generally has very specific taste on a lot of things, he can really make it sound like he had the only valid experience in the room.

beat Inside today, took about 4 hours and while I won't echo the #FuckInside thing, I'm with Jeff. I don't know what that game is, or what it's trying to tell me, or what emotion I'm supposed to get out of it in the end. Games like the Swapper, Journey or Abzu gave me enough hooks for me to think about or wonder about afterwards butInside's the equivalent of the U2 lyric "they don't know what you're doing, babe it must be art". Whatever themes they're working with are just too obtuse to investigate and not interesting enough to think about anyway.

so Inside is a headache in a suitcase?
