Giant Bombcast Game of the Year 2020: Day Two

How summarily Destiny 2 got put away immediately after being brought up made me ahake my head a little bit. Not that any of the crew did the Deep Stone Crypt raid, but if Deep Stone Lullaby had been brought up I would have hoped that it would have kept it in discussion for a little longer.

Surprised to see Blaseball brought up.

Not intended dunk here, it's very cool, but isn't just essentially a RP Forum? (Something that was very popular, and common, a long time ago) But instead of voting on Wrestling PPV results, or writing fanfic about your Harry Potter OCs, it's framed around a simulated fantasy baseball league.

Or am I super underselling the baseball simulation aspect? It's the part you never hear about.

@kamasamak: I definitely wish Jeff or Vinny would do more when this happens cause Brad does seem to grind a lot of these discussions to a halt because he is the ONLY ONE going to bat for a choice. The Hot spot before this discussed how it is a communal list...Brad never seems to want to accept that.

Also, I really loved the 'closing time' theme in Animal Crossing that you hear about five minutes before the store shuts for the night. Such a great little mood-setter.

I was surprised Persona 5 Royal didn't get any mention for best music, which was funny cause Ben brought up original P5.

I haven't finished listening to the whole thing but there was no mention of Phantasy Star Online 2 for multiplayer. To me, that released in 2020.

Man...it continues to blow my mind how much the crew overlooks orchestral soundtracks. Ori, FF7, Journey...it's crazy.

Sanctuary in the Glades (from Ori) was probably my favorite video game track from all year.

All around, this has been my favorite GotY content in a while. Feels like it's a return to the earlier years without as much hostility. I love it. So happy to have categories back.

Among Us, Minecraft, and Dota 2 shouldn't even be in the discussion. They're straight up not 2020 games. Create a category like best ongoing games for cases like this.

Starting this by spoiling the winners of the previous day's awards is poor form. Trying to avoid spoilers, so Brad just starts by spoiling what happened the day before.

Brad is such an effective filibuster in these he should join the senate.

But in all seriousness, I really enjoyed the listen, and best music is always this weird category for me where I both hate it because I never agree with your pics (HM2:WN and Undertale got robbed in 2015) but I also discover a bunch of bangers. That sludge life track is incredible, and I would never have discovered the Sexy Brutale "soundtrack" if not for GOTY. Hades is in this weird space for me where I agree with Brad in that Transistor is my favourite soundtrack of theirs, but that's largely because all the vocal songs are incredible, and I actually think the "score" of Hades is preferable.

Did no one play Hylics 2? I think that game's soundtrack shits on everything mentioned here by a long shot

Anyway, that soundtrack is a masterwork of big talent, suggesting it's anything less is silly.

Just happy Ori at least got recognition. It was my personal number one. Seems hard for orchestral scores to get recognition so thank you to Brad, Vinny, and Jason. Gareth Coker is such a great composer. Excited to see what he does with Halo Infinites score.

Shout out to Jan for the Best Music section. That's a lot to manage live but he nailed it and had fun.

Boy, did FF7R get robbed. Especially since it goes far and beyond simply orchestrating the old tracks. The jukebox remixes alone are worthy of discussion in this category. Lowkey the best jazz album to drop last year.

Man, no rules Brad executive orders not putting Spiritfarer back on when almost everyone else was for it. It’s like the RDR2 talk all over again.

My ost of the year has to be Haven by a literal mile, it is beautiful. I also really enjoyed cyberpunks music. And honestly glad Ben brought up Ghostrunner because Daniel Deluxe is awesome

I feel like Yakuza should have made top 3, but I guess I'm happy it stuck around as long as it did considering the battle theme music wasn't played nor was the other big spoilery boss fight music which I think are two of the better songs on that soundtrack.

Also, Brad hamfisting his choices into the selection and just refusing to hear people who don't agree with him has become a tradition that really needs to stop. It detracts from the whole discussion everytime it happens. Because honestly from the sound of it Ori should've been off and Spiritfarer should've made it, but Brad refused to allow it because of his love for Ori. It's disappointing.

My god, they listened to Ori music for way too long. They all sat there in near silence for like 5 minutes it felt like, and it wasn't even interesting music to boot. I agree exactly with Jeff - it sounds like a movie, and that is wholly uninteresting.

I don't think Blaseball should have been discussed. It's not a game, and 90% or more of what people actually like about it is the RP stuff that has nothing to do with the "game" itself, and can't even find on the site itself (which they said). I have zero interest in hunting down communities to find all that info, so I bailed on that after a couple of weeks when I realized the things people liked about it and were raving about were completely outside of the site. The only reason Alex wants to bring it up so much is because he's friends with the people behind it. It's dumb.

It is an absolute crime that FF7R didn't even make it onto the top 3 for music. My jaw dropped when they all just unceremoniously agreed to remove it so early on.

So glad Ben brought up Ghostrunner. I love Daniel Deluxe. I felt like he should have been in 2017 GOTY as well for Desync OST.

The Cyberpunk soundtrack is WAY better than that Ghost Runner track.

Not only do I agree with Alex on the bass on Hades ... when the game often breaks down and literally the ONLY instrument left is Bass it's fucking magical. I want that bass tone to just be injected into me.
