Ohhhh. This is the greatest game. This is also the worst HD collection.

Trying to understand tank controls was quite funny. :)

Silent Hill 2 is a great psychological horror story and such a god awful game. Survival horror used to be pretty bad back in the day.

HD collection? I'm out.

I always forget how bad the HD Collection actually is. It pretty much ruins the atmosphere of these games.

The SH hd collection is the worst way to play Silent Hill 2. I wish they gave us some notice. I have a ps2 copy of Silent Hill 2 and I would have gladly delivered it to them. I mean like either same day mail or I would’ve personally went into NYC happily today or yesterday to give them my ps2 copy.

(If they were going to be playing bad versions of Silent Hill mucked up by the West, the obvious choice should have been Shattered Memories, with its first-person psych tests administered by a psychologist very clearly modeled on Attitude-era Vince McMahon. It's also tone-deaf, but at least it would elicit interesting Dan reactions.)

That was true then as well. Akira Yamaoka had a great mind about the music of Silent Hill.

Oh man I was hoping you guys would play a classic Silent Hill game!! Can't wait to watch this weekend. I know it's a little rough now, but I have such an affinity for the original. The soundtrack is downright terrifying, and the PS1 graphics kind of have that old VHS video effect some old horror films have when it comes to looking creepier (when you're in the rusty/bloody Otherworld, mainly). Anyway, SH2 is cool, too. Definitely improves on what the original was, though I prefer the original's story.

Another fantastic intro from Abby. Seeing her experience tank controls for the first time was just magical.

I feel like I'm the only person who actually likes tank controls. I think the early RE games and SH controlled fine, hell I even thought Croc was okay.

Oh wow, I don't know if it's the "HD" remaster or capture gear or something, but these games are not supposed to be that dark. (Even without the flashlight)

Silent Hill 1-3 are beloved for being slow-burn psychological horror during a time where horror games were mostly action-focused monster closets.

The pace in these games was always plodding, controls awkward, tutorials nonexistent, but that was by design. The characters are normal people who ended up in a cursed demon town. You are bad at navigating the world. You are terrible at killing enemies. The only thing you get good at is running away and finding exits. Once that happens, the games screw with you even more.

By mid-game, you want to progress but are afraid to because every soundtrack noise makes you freeze. The door puzzle solution is through a horde of monsters, but your ammo and health are low and you have no idea where to get more. You go anyway, and walk through a one-way door into a hell world where all your maps are irrelevant. Suddenly you're trapped in some rusty grate-filled room with a shambling horror.

The gameplay isbad, even for the time, but that's not why people played these things.

Abby is dressed as Satan and she's still only the second most evil character.

This is such a good game. It's a shame Konami lost all the code (so the story goes) so a real remaster or re-releases of most of these games is impossible. I wish they would just re-release them digital as they were on GOG. They still work on Windows 10! COME ON!

Edit: Oh. This is a bad video. It's fine if she's never played it before, but then she skips everything because she doesn't pay any attention to anything or use any logic at all, and then blames the game when she can't see.

This is a horrible port of these games, though, so that is partially why. Ugh.

I love the opening song to Silent Hill 3. I still listen to it on occasion. So, good.

I guess GBeast doesn't have the Gamespot's game storage equivalent over there. Not that I really mind watching this collection, because SH2 isn't so beloved to me that I would remember exactly how it looked. I do remember that I mostly just ran around a foggy town 'till getting bored enough.

I did like Silent Hill 3 more though.

I got the “in water” ending. The main character drove his car off a bridge and drowned. I beat the game with out taking any damage too. What endings did you guys get?

@undeadpool: you could play it on the pc with a ps2 emulator, but the best way to play it is definitely on the ps2 with a regular crt tv.

GBE's struggles aside, SH2 is contending for my favorite game of all time,
and it's one of those games I re-visit every year as it holds a deeper meaning to me.

They're not easy to get into now unless you have a special interest, and with how the "HD collection" was just so awful that it became the final nail in SH's coffin, no one will get to properly experience the first 4 games again without access to a PS2.
Even the PC versions were better than the accursed HD collection.

I remember playing both SH2 and MGS2 over the 2001 summer holidays and being blown away by the level of storytelling and dark, existential, philosophical themes that I'd never seen before.

The scene with Angela on the burning staircase is still one of the most moving video game scenes i can recall.

A miserable pile of garbage.

Interesting to watch this being played. Absolutely love the Silent Hill series, but when I heard the HD "collection" was a bust I decided to avoid it and not tarnish my appreciation of the games.

Really enjoyed Alex's Third Rock From the Sun "Oh Mary!" around 5 minutes in. A quote that weirdly pops into my head every few months.
