Been waiting for a 3hour GOTY deliberations and here it is, YAY! :D

So Windjammers GOTY, right?

Someone found Year Walk scary? I think the game was OK but...come on...scary? The bar has been set low. Outlast is far better, whatever...opinions, right? Almost as big a laugh as them conceding to Brothers beating Last of Us for best moment. LEGO Marvel was fantastic so I really don't care who liked it or didn't like it.

It appears that people from other forums need a big disclaimer along the lines of:

Oh god Brad is totally right with Early Access clogging up the release list and there needing to be a filter or icon for that, Why would you even shout him down on that.

Maybe because they have someone who specifically cares and plays a lot of horror games and thus can make a well informed judgment about many games from that genre. If you want genre awards go to Gamespot or IGN.

@sarx: Point was, it's not the Early Access feature itself that they should "please stop", it's the filtering and curation on Steam that needs to improve.

The whole conversation about early access is stupid. You have a choice, you don't have to buy them. If you buy an early access game and are upset that it's not a finished product then you're an idiot. If the game isn't what you thought it would be then that's the same as any other game that you're not happy with.

Yeah, he's right on that, but that's on Valve's head to fix (among other shitty stuff in Steams UI) and it's definately not a valid reason to demonize the whole concept. Sure, right now it seems like every game is like that, but like other fads (remember Kickstarter) it will calm down and maybe it will even bring something good with it (like Kickstarter).

Yes, early access gives people a window into game development, but why *should* they know about game development? In what other industry is there this kind of institutionalized beta testing? Early film screenings are somewhat analogous, but in most cases that cut is quite polished.

I continue to be really uncomfortable with the conflation of patronage and consumerism.

I really liked the "Please Stop" discussion.

Early Access: I'm with Jeff, Brad and Vinny; it's getting a bit silly. It's a great idea that seems to be having some real negative consequences. We'll probably see some early access games that should probably never have came out. I don't know if Valve gives a limit to developers, but I wouldn't be surprised if some titles stay in Early Access forever, until Valve either tells them to release or get off Steam. I suspect some games will be released in a bad shape or will be pulled. The other thing that blows my mind with Early Access are games that go in deep discounts (50-75% off) before they are even released. Talk about devaluing your product. As a funding mechanism, I get it. It's almost a kickstarter insofar as you get money prior to launch, and you're already on Steam. Devs must be delighted. But not ever game can be Minecraft; you won't keep a community interested in your game for years while you develop it. At the end of the day, Steam is getting paid, the dev is getting some cash flow and just enough rope to hang themselves. The losers are consumer that are too eager to pull the trigger and get to experience a busted game if they're not fully aware what they're getting into.

Microtransactions: Forza devs saying they are looking at "re-balancing the economy" is fuckin gross. There is no "economy" in single player games guys. This isn't an MMO where people trade items. It's an admission that the business model IS impacting the game design. We've crossed the Rubicon. I don't think I trust publishers with microtransactions any more. I really don't want to see games sliced up into pieces and sold to me for ten times what it's worth, or artificial treadmills put in to make me grind out or buy unlocks.

early access is already grossly abused. Valve needs to label that shit and let people filter out the raw sewage of busted-ass unfinished "we promise but PAY FULL PRICE ANYWAY" bullshit.
