Yay It's Sam Phillip's friend, Gita Jackson! I haven't read the article yet, but I'm sure it's great.

Also: Austin's Dwarf Fortress story is the type of emergent stories I want from AAA western RPGs.

Consistency seems to be the breaking point of many a phantastical realm. 'Following through' is precisely what makes the flash fictions of Uel Aramcheck click for me. These stories don't blink, and follow their premise down the rabbit hole.

There has been much talk about how A Song of Ice and Fire tweaked the genre, and without valorizing what has already been celebrated in rather curious and potentially harmful ways, it has nothing to do with grime, sex or blood. It has always been about attempting to denaturalize tropes that have festered in many works that have been written in reverence to J.R.R.Tolkien. It is ironic that the same has happened to it over time, driven to caricature in literature and the spectacle of television. Our lust for novelty remains insatiable, it seems, and perhaps more base desires have overridden what had made it noteworthy in the first place.

We pick up on odd things.

Crafting plots with phantastical coatings seems to remain a challenge because people feel shackled to the legacy of 'plot' and the hero's journey itself, as a red line that circles characters and carries them off on a journey. And while there are great things to be done still in those modes of writing, crafting worlds requires an understanding of socio-political and economic models that make the world tick. There is no line, there is a tapestry.

Such knowledge and inspiration is probably best sought from outside the fantasy genre, and brought back into it, a practice that seems alien in most kinds of genre fiction sometimes - and video game writing, too. Expertise in all other things is still valued little, but our ability to apply our expertise in other arenas of knowledge seems so vital, not only to these arenas themselves, for their knowledge to grow and become disrupted in habit, bur for ourselves, so that we don't become stuck in isolation.

Discworld really lives and breath with the characters and people of it's fantasy universe

(I'm sure this is obvious to most, but there's always folk who miss out, or might have dismissed it as a LOTR book)

I suggest reading the City Watch series (or listen to it on Audible or something)

It's pretty light reading, (small digestible novellas), but quite fun!

Guards! Guards! (Discworld, #8; City Watch #1)

Men at Arms (Discworld, #15; City Watch #2)

Feet of Clay (Discworld, #19; City Watch #3)

Jingo (Discworld, #21; City Watch #4)

The Fifth Elephant (Discworld, #24; City Watch #5)

Night Watch (Discworld, #29; City Watch #6)

Gita is rad. That's all.

Edit: Shit, that wasn't all. Austin, Gita, please do a regular podcast.

She does do a regular podcast. It's called Match 3 and she co hosts with her teacher friend, Sam Phillips, and some youtuber known only as "Tricky KlipKlop."

@d_w: man, I got a tricky case of the KlipKlops once. It involved a lot of something that rhymes with scoops.

That "north of england king under the mountain" sounds like the main plot of Breath of Fire IV.

But I've gotten to the mindset that it's actually REALLY REALLY HARD to do that kind of interlocking political, social, personality-driven motives in ANY medium. That's why the Witcher and Trails series have such a fervent fanbase; they're dense and that denseness on those fronts are of a very high quality, and why so few match up to that (that and the sheer danger of doing sequels with mandatory prereqs).

'Napoleonic England'. Nope :D Other than that, welcome!

EDIT: I would have accepted 'Napoleonic Wars Era England'. Sorry for being a dreadful pedant.

Was it just me, or did the episode have weird volume issues? They got quiet then loud then quiet, but I don't feel right complaining because it might just be me.

Maybe run the podcast through that Levelator thing?
