Giant Bombcast 02/17/2015

After a weekend honoring our founding fathers, we're back with the straight dope on Evolve, Tekken vs. Soul Calibur, sidewalk-poop-as-entertainment, the game of the (last) generation, 40 years of SNL, the trials and tribulations of Peter Molyneux, and our best pitches for the Gex reboot.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Soul Calibur II is the best Soul Calibur. COME AT ME

Tekken as a series, though, is much stronger for sure.

Man the fade out to the outro music while it's being played over the end gives me flashbacks to The Hotspot. Just wish we had Jeff yelling at the end.

Dana Gould has a FANTASTIC podcast. He's still insanely funny. Recently did acting for some LA gangster type show.

But seriously, go listen to that podcast. It's very well-produced and really funny. But it releases very infrequently.

Jeff's opinions on Red Dead continue to boggle the mind.

Stopping 3 hours in...something fundamental is stopping him from liking that game. It can't just be riding the horse, cause that's fine. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's fun riding around that world once you're comfortable with it.

Also, other than The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, I don't really like Spaghetti Westerns. So it surprised me how into that game I was. Those trailers Rockstar put out explaining the different mechanics in the game and how you would interact with the world were great.

I feel like the vast majority of not-crazy people will agree with you. Hell, I know I do. The real question is, who was the best guest character? Wait wait no, I'm sorry, the actual real question is who was the best guest character and why was it Spawn? COME AT ME

Also, I was glad to hear Jeff touch on what fans of the DOA series have been saying forever: if people stop the kneejerk reactions and look past the TnA, there's actually a really good game there. Easily holds it's own against any other 3D fighter.

Also also, I was glad he brought up VF. At this point, Sega should just license the series out to Team NInja and let them handle it. Part of me wishes they would just roll all the VF characters over into DOA or make some weird crossover or something, but I also kinda just want a new VF.

Also also also, Valkyria Chronicles is the game of the generation. Done. Get fucked, boy.

It's also crazy that he was able to get through GTA IV and still find fault with Red Dead's controls. Cause GTA IV's shooting is fucking awful. And even the driving is shit.

Red Dead remains the only Rockstar developed game that I've liked enough to finish. I've finally learned my lesson with GTA's.

Honestly, even as a huge Zelda fan and as a GameCube SCII owner, I actually like playing as Spawn most when it comes to the bonus characters. He's great to play with and interesting. Link is pretty weak and annoying and none of my friends or I would ever use him after a while because any other character (well, most of the other characters) could handily kick his butt.

Heihachi was the laziest, dumbest guest character ever though. Spawn and Link were at least something different. Heihachi was just a Tekken character that Namco had to slightly remap some moves to.

I just can't understand the gripes the crew (mostly Brad) had about how long it takes to unlock new hunters and monsters in Evolve. Sure, it takes a while to level up certain skills and I'll admit, starting with just one of each isn't great. On the other hand, forcing you to learn to a character ensures you know to play your class. By the end of ranking up Markov, you know the range that the lightning gun activates at, when to pop your shield, etc. When you have such a small team of players, everyone needs to understand how to use their characters to fullest, especially against Wraith.

Red Dead remains the only Rockstar developed game that I've liked enough to finish. I've finally learned my lesson with GTA's.

As much as I love Red Dead I can agree that for me personally riding the horses was never fun. I thought having to mash A to run repeatedly was so incredibly tiring and such a bad design choice for the huge gameworld they created.

That said everything else about that game was great. Good characters, fun shooting, good missions, great story. The side activities like the hunting and so forth were awesome. One of the few games of last generation that I just could not wait to play and it didn't disappoint one bit.

I even had fun in the online for many hours despite how broken it initially was.

But like you guys said, Jeff likes GTA IV and I thought that was such a fundamental disappointment from every conceivable standpoint. I absolutely hated all the characters and the story was meandering and awful. Driving felt like you were sliding on ice no matter what people say about having to get used to it - it was plain bad. Then there was that huge step back with not being able to buy properties and just overall less things to do. No idea how Jeff enjoyed it. Opinions and tastes, I guess.

Dan was so over when Brad seemed like he was about to powder during Dan's talk about pulling out his gig and juicing to don the crimson mask.

Like with The Last Guardian, I'll begin to care about the game when/if we actually hear something from the devs.

@l4wd0g: I also don't always agree with Sarkeesian, but I don't think that that's a fair comparison. If Walker called her a pathological liar out of the gate just because she hasn't finished her Kickstarter yet, it would be a bit heavy handed and out of left field. Molyneux has quite a history of bombastic statements that never come to fruition. Like over and over on an almost game-by-game basis.

I think it probably was partially the setting, whereas GTA IV's setting spoke to him a lot more. The old west setting by it's nature also means everything is a bit slower-paced, and let's face it: Jeff is not a patient guy.

Isn't there an entire separate wrestling podcast so that I don't have to listen to a bunch of bullshit about wrestling on this one? Dan, I know it's hard for you to accept when someone doesn't agree with you on something, but my feeling about wrestling is the same as yours with plays / theatre. Imagine now if wrestling started slowly turning into on-stage theatre drama (more and more like a play; like more than it already is). This is what you are doing for me with Giant Bomb every time you talk about wrestling. I don't like it. :(
