Giant Bombcast 08-20-2013

The gang gets together to discuss John Cena's catchphrase, the magic of Disney Infinity, the even-more-magic of krokodil, Dota 2, Gone Home, Ultima Forever vs. Plants vs. Zombies, War Thunder, GTA Online, and the value of pretending to be into football.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

I dig that DOTA2 keeps getting mentioned in the summary even when it might only be as much as "Brad what'd you play? DOTA? Moving on."

Hah, so I'm not crazy. I thought I had blanked out during the alleged Dota 2 discussion, but it didn't actually happen at all.

Jeff said on his tumblr that he's putting "DOTA" into the descriptions if it only gets at least a single mention so people go apeshit in the comments.

SR3 PS3 is performs perfectly acceptably and I'm one of the biggest 60fps-whores around.

and seriously if someone buys the 12gig PS3 and runs into trouble because there's no space to install those hugeass games than that's the fault of that person wtf it says 12 on it, the games say how much they need also.

It does require mounting rails specific to the SuperSlim because it's just that tiny, it's not going to bend you over and do you without lube like Microsoft HDs.

I looked up the 12 GB PS3, and one of the first results was someone on Sony's forums having problems installing due to lack of space after a couple games, as Vinny postulated.

So paying for a worthless hat = the right way to F2P

Having a range of options to pay to skip gameplay, none of which are required = fucccckkkkeeedddd

And oh by the way "the game is great!"

Whenever I played Saints Row The Third, I never had any issue with the framerate on the 360. Sure, it wasn't super smooth, but it was nowhere near obnoxious, I didn't even notice it. I don't think they realize just how much the PC has made it impossible for them to judge console versions fairly. Brad saying that it is unacceptable, even by other console standards, is just ridiculous. Even from what I've seen online(haven't been able to play it yet), it totally looks fine on consoles.

I don't care about the general opinion, I just wish it wouldn't become the main topic of discussion EVERY TIME console games are brought up nowadays. Just getting old.

Who the fuck was Brad talking too? SummerSlam was amazing, and had possibly the best match of the year.

I fucking HATE how Jeff represents wrestling. WHY THE FUCK IS HE ON A WRESTLING PODCAST IF HE DOESN'T CARE FOR WRESTLING HOLY SHIT!

Because it's entertaining to hear Jeff rant about how terrible and stupid wrestling has become, and it's good to have different perspectives on a podcast so it doesn't turn into a circle jerk. And I bet he finds the fact that it drives certain people nuts hilarious.

But doesn't it then turn into a circle jerk for people who hate wrestling at that point? It's fine he and other people dislike it, but it's still a bit weird how this things he likes to talk about this thing so much when he supposedly dislikes it.

Someone has to offset the circle jerk of people that like today's wrestling.

I hardly see how enjoying today's wrestling is a circle jerk, but OK

Because he has still managed to watch a lot of it and checks in from time to time. Listening to the earlier podcasts, I get the idea he wants to love wrestling but just doesn't like the direction it's headed at this time.

Hasn't Jeff stated several times in the past that he rarely watches wrestling and really the only wrestling related thing he enjoys is that VGCW thing? I know we all love Jeff, but don't take him too seriously with his opinion on the current state of professional wrestling. I don't think he watches it enough to truly give an opinion on it.

If we're talking about Saints Row The Third, I agree. Because of some hyperbole about the frame rate in that game and what I felt were really exaggerated criticisms of the frame rate on the console versions of Far Cry 3 I said to myself, "Ok, I like these guys a lot. I usually agree with them, but on this one point...fuck 'em. They play too many games on high end PCs and are spoiled by them." That in mind, I picked up SRIV yesterday for the Xbox360.

Woops! Holy shit, the frame rate is fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked. The opening sequence has this scene of over the top, fluidly executed, badassadry from the boss and it was straight up busted by FPS turbulence. I should have been laughing, and instead I was cringing. That was before the gameplay even began, once it did it was even worse. I up and turned it off and went over to my computer to buy SRIV on Steam. Just like that.

I'm man enough to admit I was wrong and that these guys know more than me, I probably should have heeded their advice. Still, I think there's something to be said for a record of hyperbole and how that might jade a reader against what are legitimately valid criticisms in the case of some products. A la SRIV (360.)

I wonder why Vinny cared to talk about the price of Gone Home but you never hear him say anything about generic shooter #58 costing $60. Also please stop this whole "Is this really a game?" shit. I've heard you do it multiple times on the podcast over the last 3 years or so (With Minecraft for example). You sound just like the people talking about what is art and what is not. I doesn't fucking matter.

Never really get annoyed at Vinny ever, but god damn the Pikmin 3 stuff is so over exaggerated.

I can't speak one way or the other about Pikmin 3, but it does sound vaguely reminiscent of AC:NL and my frustrations with that game to start. I'd never played an Animal Crossing game before and they seemed to take a very casual, plodding pace with it to a degree where I ended up really gated on the things I could do very early and didn't understand what the hell people found appealing.

I'm still struggling with that game, and if they're as similar as Vinny was kind of claiming, I can see how someone would be a little frustrated by how it paces itself.

It's sort of like a F2P game, but without the option to bypass anything.

I generally just grit my teeth and bear the talk about 'fuck console games' but the proposition of skipping GTAV while waiting for a port that isn't even currently announced made me stunned and slack jawed. I'm also kind of bummed that the crew has stopped exercising due diligence with multiplatform games.

Admittedly, it's a really dumb thing to have to ask, but there seems like there are enough people saying 'Hey, SRIV was perfectly fine on PS3 but hooooly shit is it bad on 360' that it seems crazy there was never a footnote or anything addressing that, provided it's true.

It matters to me! There should be a discussion about what is a game and what isn't, because this nether space we're in right now where glorified tech demos like Proteus and interactive stories like Gone Home are in the same category as Binding of Issac and Super Meat Boy is certainly not a stopping point.

I worked as a QA tester at EA Mobile for some time. The "Best Deal" thing they're talking about for PvsZ2 is the kind of stuff they would ask us to bug. They would just fix it one time out of two though.

At the 1:21:40 mark, Jeff uses the the term "verbage" to describe text written on a hyperlink that refers users to purchase a game on another website.

Well, I just had to turn the fucking podcast off at that point.

Man... fucking "verbage"... from Jeff no less. Verbage. WTF? I mean, even if he meant to say "verbiage", he still used the word wrong because the text was not unnecessary filler text on the page. Fucking Lorem Ipsum is verbiage, but two words on a web link isn't.

Verbage. It's my pet peeve I guess.

A quick search of multiple online dictionaries reveals:

- "Ver-bij" as an acceptable pronunciation of "verbiage".

- "manner or style of expressing something in words; wording" as a definition of "verbiage"

I have now made it possible for you to listen to the rest of the bombcast. You're welcome!

Those standards are yours, though. They're not universal. I've played about 80 hours of Saints Row 3 on 360 and have had 0 issues with its performance, but you and Jeff made reference to poor performance. Because our standards are different because the only PC game I play is Civ V and it runs at about 8 FPS.

Also Jeff and Brad are total sourpusses not having any affection for Disney. What depressing childhoods they must have had. Actually that might explain a lot.

I had a wonderful childhood and I don`t really feel any affection for Disney either.

@apollobob: Ver-bij shows up in the google results only because the character used to represent the long e sound is an invalid character for some reason.

That said, if you apply definition 2 from thefreedictionary.com and chalk the pronunciation to creative license or regional differences or something, then I guess I can continue the podcast.

Thanks apollobob.

I really liked Uncharted 3 when it came out, until I realized how blah it was and how it didn't stick with me at all, unlike Uncharted 2.

UC3 was... fine. That was a problem cause UC2 was a genre-defining experience.

I'm man enough to admit I was wrong and that these guys know more than me, I probably should have heeded their advice. Still, I think there's something to be said for a record of hyperbole and how that might jade a reader against what are legitimately valid criticisms in the case of some products. A la SRIV (360.)

This is specifically why I reiterated over and over on the podcast that SR4 on 360 is terrible by 360 standards, not because we're "spoiled by high end PCs." Caveat emptor.

Given that the vast majority of games on 360 manage to run at 30fps or more, I'd say that is in fact an objective standard for the console.

Look, there's a science to the way the brain perceives smooth motion when viewing static frames in a sequence, and if you're getting much below 30 you're bumping into a pretty unpleasant lower boundary. Even 35mm film at 24fps relies on a degree of motion blur to achieve its sense of fluidity.

@brad I had a cable modem in 1996 with Road Runner from Time Warner (later Brighthouse). At the time Road Runner was being test marketed in Tampa and New York City.

Looks like I picked the right time to start watching wrestling again, with all the talk of it on Giant Bomb right now.

If you do some research on krokodil, you may be surprised to find out that it's not really a specific drug that can be nailed down. In large part it's people killing themselves with what they think to be the same product, but in the end it's like a game of telephone with 100 people in line trying to explain how to cook shake and bake meth. Everyone is taking something that's trying to be meth, all of it is even worse than meth, or whatever the original amphetamine was. The further it gets from the source, the crazier it is.

It's like an urban legend of home drug manufacturing in eastern Europe.

It matters to me! There should be a discussion about what is a game and what isn't, because this nether space we're in right now where glorified tech demos like Proteus and interactive stories like Gone Home are in the same category as Binding of Issac and Super Meat Boy is certainly not a stopping point.

They are in the same category like Super Mario Bros 3, the latest Call of Duty and Ripper are in the same category.

I would consider all those titles you mentioned games way before Gone Home and Proteus. Ripper is cutting it close, but there is dialogue in that game, so it's still above Gone Home in terms in levels of interactivity in content versus story.

@pudge: "Game" is too wide a term to be of any meaning. That can mean anything from I have no mouth and I must scream to Pong to submarine simulators. And yes, Proteus and Gone Home. Doesn't mean Proteus is the same kind of stuff as Quake 3 Rocket Arena is, but neither is Zork, and if you try telling me Zork is not a game we're going to have to fight.

Zork is totally a game! You are a dude who is interacting with the environment, you have a clear goal, there are monsters to fight. In Proteus, you're a dude who walks around and its pretty. In Gone Home, you're discovering a prewritten narrative within the environment. I would argue that this is the difference between game and story, at least in adventure games. At least Myst had puzzles to solve.
