Wow, another super early bombcast! I'm still not used to actually getting these on tuesdays my time (but I always think I'll be able to download it on a tuesday because Ryan always says it's tuesday in the damn thing). Super pleasant surprise!

I wonder: Telltale seems to be losing its grasp on what made their games special. But what made them special? Is it the nostalgic formula of the adventure game? Or is it some genuine new formula they introduced into the genre?

My own perspective: Telltale definitely rode a wave of nostalgia, as is evidenced by the choice of franchises in the companies' history. They molded that and the later-day Sierra interface into a context on modern hardware that incorporated the One Major Strength of adventure games: Story.

I'm okay with consistent interfaces. I'm okay with the staid and plodding evolution of what an adventure game is. What matters is story. This is a genre which has a particular strength in performing a type of triggered theater that might not involve the player in the same immediate way that Modern Warfare or Skyrim might, but allows for the space of performance that a minimal interface affords.

Telltale is making the same mistake that killed the adventure genre initially. It is not important to change interfaces, to "keep up". It is important to engage the player in the story.

And fuck useless puzzles.
