A lot of the Game Pass games have been on Games with Gold over the past few years so I have a bunch of them in my library already, but companies taking the Netflix model of "pay us x per month to access this library and just go nuts" is definitely a trend I want to see continue. Especially in lean release months.

the virtual console as a concept is kind of corny but i don't agree with jeff saying that it's silly for individual people to refer to it as such. thats a brand nintendo, intentionally or unintentionally, cultivated, and i feel like when people think about nintendo rereleasing old games on nintendo hardware i think about it as a virtual console game, not an emulated game. if we're blaming someone we should be blaming nintendo, probably.

by the same token at some point, i think in a jar time episode, jeff said the same thing about people still doing the reggie fils aime persona meme thing being a little goofy and i feel the same way about that as i do this. like thats something nintendo more or less encouraged in the directs etc and should they decide to move away from that idea its not surprising for their audience to not move with them as quickly? if that makes sense i guess ?

Need for Speed: Canadian Stampede

Nah, Wip3out is the best game in the franchise, and you know I mean that shit because I used the nonsense title.

It has the best tDR designs and art direction (although probably not if you prefer their more colour-explosion-in-Japan look), the best soundtrack (curated by Sasha, who also wrote five exclusive tracks for it, and included the mighty "Xpander" on top of that), and the most interesting mechanics (risk/reward of boost management, more weapon types, offensive/defensive weapon pads). Plus it runs in the PlayStation's high-res mode, while maintaining a silky-as-fuck framerate.

I am very much pro-N64 on the F-Zero front, though; GX is fucking rad as well.

DOA5:LR has excellent tutorials. Shows you the input for a move, tells you you did it right by moving to the next one, no menuing to look up the next one. There's also a combo challenge thing that shows you a string of moves and similarly tells you where you messed up. Standard set the ai do do a thing so you can react, and a bunch of framedata type stuff that I haven't looked at because I'm a filthy casual.

Every time I try a new fighting game the lack of a smooth "go through all the moves" is incredibly frustrating and probably most of why I haven't stuck with anything else besides soul calibur.

Worth noting on Pokken that all of those "new" characters (except Decidueye) were previously released to the Japanese arcade version of Pokken. So they're not new; they just never came to the Wii U.

Shit, @Jeff . I don't think I ever knew about the F-Zero AX game in full being accessible on the Gamecube disc of GX with cheats.

I unlocked the arcade tracks the old fashioned way - by finishing all four GPs on Master difficulty, that was brutal. One of the most, if not the most, ridiculous accomplishments in all of video games for me. I believe my lifespan was shortened from those events, should have gotten that gameshark instead.

Agreed. There are plenty of games that I'd love to just play a level or two to remind myself what that was like without having to buy them outright. This new Vanquish remaster being a prime example. Yah I'd play a bit of Vanquish, but I don't really need to own that game again.

I don't really play fighting games much anymore; the most I play is if my brother comes over and he wants to play a round or two against me on whatever fighting game. That said, I would like to see a Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter game (and maybe if you want to go extreme, add in vs. Dead or Alive!) Tekken and Virtua Fighter have always been kind of similar to me just in the speed of the move sets.

Virtua Fighter was a little faster depending on the character, but still. I would still play a new Capcom vs. SNK. I am not a fan of some of the recent mixes of fighting game crossovers, with Street Fighter characters in Tekken and what have you though Namco and Capcom have been doing that kind of thing for a while now.

The scorpio isn't meant to be the main Xbox, the S is, Spencer said this in the IGN Xbox podcast. Scorpio isn't going put Xbox past the PS4, this is a premium console that maybe 10% will buy, just like the elite controller.

I'd wager it's about a 1:100 chance the Scorpio launches <$400. My bet is, best case scenario $400 for the Scorpio, $500 for Scorpio w/ Elite Controller, but more realistically Scorpio $450. The way Microsoft has talked about the Scorpio, it appears more like a product to bring some prestige back to the brand, similar to the Surface tablets and notebooks.

Also, I'm totally with Ben on loving Nintendo while hating Nintendo. I love their games, but I hate pretty much everything else about how they operate and the decisions they make. It's bad enough that I regularly question whether it's worth putting up with their bizarre business practices.

I wish that some of Square/Platinum/Taro's messaging about Nier: Automata's different "endings" was better. Ben hasn't really 'beaten' the game yet, but without conducting research, it would be easy to assume that one has beaten the game at the end of Route A even with the screen at the end telling one to keep playing (and the general internet hullabaloo about there being "multiple endings", which accounts for the joke endings but doesn't really do justice to "endings" A-E). Perhaps calling them "acts" instead of "routes" would have been better?
