Metal Gear Survive isn't as bad as all that. I really enjoyed it, and that 15 minute mission was very simple, to the point there was like 4 minutes at the end that I had killed everything and had to wait for it to end.

I'd hesitate to describe Ben's knowledge of DBZ as expert-level.

@hornet: Yeah that mission was pretty easy for me, too. But I could see how it could be hard if you weren't properly equipped, I was well kitted out at that point.

i think jeff is misrepresenting some of the mechanics of metal gear survive a little bit. i am about 11 hours in and already have farms, animal cages with sheep, and water purifiers along with rain collecting tanks. while these don't produce very quickly, they do very much help lessen the hunger and thirst requirements. i pretty much dont have to worry about clean water at all now, and with the addition of a smoker in my base, none of my caught food will spoil so that's coming along well so far.

i think his willingness to see the "metal gear" parts of this game were in conflict with the survival aspects of it. he mentioned building a sheep cage and not finding sheep when there is in fact maybe 50 yards from the base some sheep that will continue to spawn every few hours. the game even gives you stamps to place on the map that will let you mark where you find herbivores like sheep, goats, donkeys, etc, and even separate stamps for carnivores and plant life. i think he was on board for the possibility of metal gear wackiness and not survival gameplay, which anyone who has followed this site for any length knows that pretty much none of the duders are into.

anyway, enjoyed hearing his opinion but just wanted to say that after brad was saying he would quit playing if none of the survival things get any easier, they do if you are willing or able to have the time to set them up.

i totally get all the complaints about this game, but as a metal gear stan, and a fan of cooking fake food in video games, i am very much enjoying it. its not metal gear, but i was never expecting it to be.

@zefpunk: The issue Jeff is highlighting (and somewhat corroberrated by other reviewers), is that the game just doesn't seem like it was made to respect the players time. And just throws tons of meaningless busy-work to give the illusion of content and crafted the game in such a way to nudge you toward spending extra money. As Jeff mentioned, this feels like a mediocre f2p game with a $60 tag on it and cynically riding off the MGS brand (kind of like GoldenEye: Rogue Agent tried to do a few years ago)

@zefpunk: You should make soups using the canteen, it basically doubles your meat.

@jedikv: Are there any survival games that respect the players time? Also it's $40 not $60.

I have actually been having fun with Metal Gear Survive. It probably depends on how tolerant you are personally of the standard busywork in survival/crafting games. I think I tolerate it way more than Jeff it sounds like. Is it as good as MGS 5? No. Is it decent? That's a good word for it. Not great, but just decent. One thing I have been noticing recently is this: Horde Mode + Loot Game = Wild Imbalances in Difficulty. I have seen this in The Division, in Fortnite (non-battle royale), and now in Metal Gear Survive. There's just no way to balance the wave difficulty when in a loot game because it's always way to easy, or impossible, it seems like.

Does anyone know the online DVK-2 emulator that Brad was talking about? I'd be really interested in playing some Soviet Tetris.

That was a good "would you rather" email. At first I thought, "I could go a week without electricity. I could charge up some battery packs beforehand, catch up on podcasts, read some books and magazines, get news and music on my emergency radio, maybe even go outside!" But then I realized that would also mean no electric lights, refrigerator, microwave, and very limited internet if I don't want to go over my data plan. And no heating/AC would suck too unless you live in a place with perfect weather.

One week without running water probably wouldn't be too bad if you could still use stream/well water. Just stock up on bottled water or buy some filters for drinking, sponge bathe instead of shower, and manually fill the toilet tank every time after flushing.

I still don't fully understand the micro transaction thing. Just don't buy it, no one is putting a gun to you or your kids head and demanding you to buy a micro transaction. As a parent, tell your son/daughter to not buy something without asking, teach them the consequences of what will happen if you do buy without asking. This seems like an over complicated issue. However, I do think it is important to inform parents who aren't video game/tech savvy the importance of what they are getting for there kids.

Brad's the only GBwester who knows what's up

After like nine goddamn hurricanes I can tell you that a week without power is a hot sticky obnoxiously boring time, where you'll read books for nine hours a day and go for a walk every forty minutes because maybe you'll see bucket trucks working to fix shit

But week without water is a goddamn nightmare where you wait at the red cross for two hours every day to get your bottled rations so you can take a dump and make dinner from the same bottle without having to get a shovel and bury your shame in the back yard. Like, precooked, food that can be heated on a camp stove sucks, but it's still better than living in any country where not everyone can vote. Getting a rash on the inside of your thigh because you've been using wet-naps instead of showering is a whole other story.

Obviously if you have a well or a nice fresh stream you can bathe in and drink out of with a little boiling then the whole question is pointless. It's also equally pointless if you have your own solar farm or coal plant.

I was a Peace Corps volunteer for 2 years in rural Azerbaijan. I had electricity (usually), dial-up internet (sometimes), but no running water. It was relatively easy to get by without running water, but no electricity would have forced me to become a vegan, since modern meat and dairy products generally require a fridge.

I fetched water from a nearby spring every couple of days and then filtered and boiled it for drinking, teeth-brushing, and a weekly sponge bath. I pooped in a shack in the yard that had a hole in the ground. It wasn't a great life but it also wasn't a bad life.

The winters were long and boring but Civ 5 got me through them, so yeah, I'll take the electricity.
