I am so looking forward to how this is going to go wrong, with a mild grunt of confusion from Jeff.

By amazing business-class internet you mean insane business-class NAT that can't connect to anything internet, right.

Considering the state of the Stadia launch would this count as an Unfinished?

As a big fan of the new Tomb Raider games, a world where 25% of all games star Lara Croft is an interesting one. Just not one I'd wanna live in.

Got my preorder coming (maybe ? Not shipped yet). Kinda interested in this due to spending a lot if time in hotel rooms. Kinda ... unimpressed... by the launch titles though.

Still have no idea who this is for? Steriling said it may take up to 20 gigabytes of data per hour.

@aproposshadows: A lot of the world don't have BW caps - at least for non-mobile. 20 GB/h isn't too scary on an unmetered connection.

Just got an email from Google.

- Don't play wireless
- If you play wireless, use 5 GHz
- Put everything on the same network

Oh boy....

I wish they would have used this opportunity to give you server quality graphics. Like real fully ray traced gaming or something.

Basically this only makes sense if you can't afford a high end console or gaming PC. But even the controller and chromecast ultra bundle is pretty expensive so it's not like it's super cheap.

Yeah I gotta see this on a real home internet connection. I get “15” mbps down and some would call that slow, but I’ve never had better in all the apts I’ve lived. If that’s not enough then that will be huge. Also, data caps, like Jeff mentioned. I’m lucky, but many many people don’t have the option to not have a data caps.

The crew sounds lukewarm but this seems like a revolutionary development for consoles. It works. That's all that matters. The real turning point will be the start of next-gen and 2-3 years in, when PS5 Pro would be announced or whatever the equivalent. Because it's at that point it will become clear the value save of having Stadia over upgrading a PC/console. The group keep slagging on Google but it should be pretty clear there is more value in playing the long game rather than a flashy launch. They don't have the concerns Sony/Microsoft have of shipping units and unit shelving space so having a limited launch and slow rollout makes sense.

That all said, I don't plan to buy one and Google scares me.

i would love to see a geforce now comparison. im not sure it’s relevant to the bigger conversation as the ease of use isn’t there, and it’s in beta, and price isn’t announced— but those are all things google used to do. announce a thing, slowly roll it out, be better than most things on the market and then kill it if they were bored with it. like inbox. or google voice. or google fiber. or google fi.

@unastrike: @jeff: @benpack:

If you want a tournament player to test Fighting Games on Stadia (and perhaps to make a guest appearance on Ranking of Fighters), remember that Samantha "Persia" Hancock is working with Gamespot these days.

Even if she won't so it herself, I'm sure she could easily get you in contact with one who would.

Abby brought a great point during the beastcast, "what if this service is for those that buy 1 or 2 games a year, being sports, fighting or racing games.

Edit: Oh god the just dance debacle is incredible even for google. Maybe you can stream the scoring to the smartwatch.

@alvarofaraujo That's a great point. If Stadia can get stuff like Madden and NBA 2K running well enough, I'm sure those customers would welcome the chance to not have to buy a console or PC.

We have great, uncapped internet where I live, and I've pre-ordered the founders pack. I feel like Google has been selling this wrong, or reviewers are looking at it wrong, or both. It's not a console launch, it's more like putting your video card in the cloud. If this works well, why would I spend $1,000 on a new video card when I can just pay $10 a month for 4K 60FPS with HDR?

I totally get that it isn't for everyone, especially with internet infrastructure being so terrible in some places. I would hope at some point that all these streaming services, etc would be pushing internet providers to offer a better service.

@hobozero: @hobozero: i havent seen a place without data caps lately. especially since the fcc threw their hands up in the air. i mean what state or province are you in? these guys, and me too, are in california and that’s decidedly not some random midwestern state. i have to watch my data every month. ive had to just unplug my router a couple times and thats just from streaming video and getting things on xbox game pass for pc

@gruxkaban: Nova Scotia, Canada. None of our providers have caps, and they are very competitive. I have 1Gbit fiber and no caps. Not bragging - I realize how rare that sort of thing is nowadays.

I can remember how terrible mobile data plans were pre-2007, and how the iPhone came along like a bomb and radically changed the industry. I don't know what needs to happen for the same paradigm shift in home internet (well, get rid of Ajit Pai, that guy sucks :), but I hope something comes along soon.

I love everyone trying to square the circle of an audience of people who aren't already invested in other ways to play games, yet are willing to pay a monthly fee for the privilege of streaming games that they also pay full price for.

@hobozero: ugh Ajit Pai. he’s like a reverse iphone. everything was o.k (not perfect), and then his fcc direction comes along and there are no guarantees for a bright future any time soon. other states are proposing or have proposed their own local net neutrality laws, but like california for example wont implement its laws until the lawsuits surrounding net neutrality and the fcc are over (so like 2 or 3 years). google is too la di da about an issue that now has bureaucracy and lobbyists surrounding it

Because, and correct me if I'm wrong - but you still have to purchase the games on Stadia don't you? Even if the pro service for whatever a month offers some games as part of the sub, you are still going to miss out on a block of the games that aren't on the sub service.

I see there's no RTX in Tomb Raider. If they can't do the highest end PC stuff, this will always be a no-go. They touted the "Tie instances together and have higher than PC quality", but yeah, looks like that's also half-baked.

@mortimer: @mortimer: i mean, youre right. i wasn’t trying to focus on the US as a make or break market for google but as a large area with a pressure point. on it’s face, the best version of stadia is interesting— next year (when the founders edition isn’t a prerequisite and chrome browsers, and other devices are supported) Many people i know see the prospect of not buying a console and being able to play a lot of the big games announced at E3 with a release next year as very exciting.
