Blood money is still one of my favorite game experiences of all time. Taking people as human shields was easily one of my favorite parts as well. I can't believe they didn't release this on PC when a 4k 60 fps experience would be welcome over the old clunky code.

@vinny don't let Dan make you think Blood Money is more action focussed, it's totally still a puzzle game. It's just not the way Dan plays it obviously haha.

Blood Money has some amazing unique/special kills, in case anyone was watching this and thinking it's just shooting and explosives. The one that always comes to mind is that in the opera level, you can break into one of the actors' dressing room, swap out his prop gun with a real gun, and then wait until the dress rehearsal gets to the "and then he shoots the other guy" (who is one of the targets) scene. It's so good.

Also, the thing that @vinny mentions about a globe and an old folks home *is* in Blood Money (but it's not an old folks home, it's a very fancy rehab clinic). One of your targets, who is ostensibly there to get help for his alcoholism, has a secret bottle of booze stashed inside a globe. Of course, you can find and poison this bottle.

So what I'm trying to say is that Blood Money is still *very* much a murder puzzle game.

@meierthered: the bad levels outweighs the good ones and the weird “concealment” meter was a strange addition to the franchise built around disguises. It’s not a terrible game, just a disappointing one.

@meierthered: It is, it's not a Hitman game at all. It's a good/decent 'stealth' game, but stealth like Splinter Cell Conviction, using cover and shooting mechanics more than changing into outfits and blending in in plain sight.

Hitman never needed cover shooter mechanics, and linear levels with a heavy focus on story. Thankfully IOI recognized that and issued an actual apolagy to all Hitman fans stating that Absolution was the wrong way to go for Hitman ( even though it sold the most ).

I throughly enjoyed Absolution when it was released. They are plenty of seeds you see planted in that game that really bear fruit in the two new ones.

It must of been contracts I played? Trying to save the priest who had taken Agent 47 in, and the evil Russian dude? I found the gameplay occasionally tedious, but I rather enjoyed where it all went.

I just wish IOI showed some love to the PC version of Blood Money. It could use a few improvements like better controls and proper resolution support and such.

It's probably a very obvious thing to point out but anyone looking for how those old games played should take this QL with a grain of salt.

While Blood Money is quite janky and particularly unclear about things like interacting with the environment and whether or not you can take down a guard, it retains what 2016 hitman modernised and feature plenty of creative indirect kills that formed the puzzlebox nature hitman '16 was praised for.

For my qualms about Absolution, you can see where they started to take the series into a much clearer route, in-world button prompts for taking guards out, scaling ledges, and picking up objects just make it a much more readable experience; thankfully they didn't keep the super linear levels and the instinct mechanic.

Also that lens flare, my eyes!

To be fair to Dan, that 1st level of Blood Money was a tutorial, and forced you into some action sequences whether you wanted to play it that way or not. As someone who plays Hitman games as a "Silent Assassin", on that level I kinda went, "Fuck it", and popped some caps.

Absolution isn't terrible, it's just much too linear and punishes you for "playing the wrong way", something they corrected in Hitman 2016. Absolution definitely laid the groundwork for how Hitman 2016 would play. Blood Money is still a classic.

I can't quite figure out Dan's love for stealth-action games, like the Metal Gear or Hitman series, when he eschews stealth almost entirely.

I'm not saying "his fun is wrong," only... Dan plays a Stealth Action game as an 80's Action Movie, Power-Fantasy Shooter.

Does Dan have the same affinity for Splinter Cell, a more heavily stealth-focused game?

After watching the entire QL.. yah I dunno. The discussion has been had a million times already, but a little bit of effort wouldn't hurt. I guess I thought that after a lot of folks in the office got into Hitman and kinda learned the ropes they might approach this QL and try to play at least one level right using all the skills they've learned from the modern games.

I suppose as a way of showing off how the "HD enhancement" is all about the QL does a decent job. During Absolution though all pretenses of even trying were dropped.

Not a huge deal, but for those that never played the early games and were maybe interested in trying them out in this package the video didn't do a whole lot to show off how the game is played.

For this one, they shouldn't have done tutorials. Hitman tutorials are weird because they are not like the actual missions.

This made me nostalgic for janky physics and sad we are past it. Max Payne 2 was also great in this regard.

It was a nice change of pace, and a fun way of seeing 47 in a different light. Personally i thought it was kind of pathetic for IOI to apologize for trying something new. But angry lynch mob gamers usually always carry the loudest voice.

I'm happy they made it, and I'm happy they changed the formula yet again in 2016. Because going back to any of those old games before Absolution is a real joyless experience.

Interesting contrast with Blood Money tutorial where it explores all gameplay options fully including various assassination methods compared to the recent Hitman tutorial missions where they guide you to be more discreet and minimize violence with mission stories involving mostly disguises and isolated spaces.

Totally this! There was silent assassin bonuses in the first three games too and there was immediately an online scene for doing silent assassin runs as soon as Codename 47 came out. I can't really remember because it was a terrifyingly long time ago now, but the scene was pretty big online for the PC versions, it really started to explode with blood money, though.

Hitman: Ab Solution was great, just weird. I wouldn't mind seeing some of the setpiece levels from it redesigned for modern Hitman.

Also, the Blood Money ragdolls were always hilarious, but I do feel like they've been amplified a little here. I don't remember nearly as many bodies jetting into the air like that.

@elite49: Brad I think has definitely got into it. I'm not gonna be the guy to tell you how to play a game the right way to enjoy it or anything, but I kind of thought Dan was playing the modern Hitmans at least attempting stealth, when it seems like he probably just plays it like this. It's his thing and if thats fun for the guy then all the power to him, just maybe not the best way to show off the game to the general public?

As a long time Hitman fan, I played them all from the very beginning, it was always a bummer to hear these games get compeltely sidelined on GB for years. Now I know I know "what do you care what people like or don't like it doesn't influence you" but I guess I'm an idiot because to a certain degree I do care. So I thought this was finally the moment where they would replay the old Hitman games with a brand new appreciation...aaand... Dan just ran through it shooting everything.

Totally and I get exactly what you mean. Them constantly thinking the new Hitman games are a completely different thing (stealth, puzzle, etc) than the first couple is... just not true. Maybe Absolution is the farthest one away from the formula but it's still very much a Hitman game.

Man, I had to punch my grumpy old man self back down into hiding a bit during this one hahaha. So much wrong information for a very old game. Gotta give Dan credit, his enthusiasm (no idea why he actually has any, he doesn't really seem to understand or even actually know very much about the game) has brought a ton of great coverage and attention to the series to GB.
