Giant Bomb Presents: How Keiji Inafune Became Kickstarter's Latest Success Story

The creator of Mega Man is busy refreshing his Kickstarter page for Mighty No. 9, a spiritual successor that's already passed $1.5 million. At PAX, we talked about how this game came to be, and Japan's awareness of Kickstarter.

Giant Bomb Presents is giantbomb.com's home for interviews, previews, and more.

Here's hoping they'll make a great game.

Also, hearing from Ben Judd again is neat, I used to follow Bionic Commando really closely when it was in development, listeing to their podcasts and reading his blog posts. Man, that was some time ago.

I wonder if the Shantae kickstarter will have problems since it ended up so soon after the Mighty No. 9 kickstarter, and those games are basically pooling the same audience. (people need recovery paychecks!!)

I don't know how to explain this, it's nice to hear a translator be more than just a voice. Ben Judd is a cool guy it seems and not only is his interpretation very natural and fluid, he's got his own presence in an interview that might require it.

Also, this is the first I've heard about this game and I couldn't be more excited, it's interesting to hear Mr. Inafune's opinion on capcom. He's a super smart guy.

I enjoyed hearing Ben Judd translating for Keiji Inafune again. It reminds me of that episode of G4's Icons about the history of the Mega Man franchise, where I first learned of Inafune.

Holy shit, WHAT?! I haven't heard of this at all. More Shantae (or just Wayforward) sounds awesome. Giving them my money right now!

Am I the only one who'd like a new Sigma Star Saga, btw? The game got kinda grindy and repetitive at times but I really liked the idea, story and characters and all that. I think today's Wayforward could pull off a way better game.

Donated to this Kickstarter on Day 1. Also the only Kickstarter I've ever felt compelled to give money to.

Thank you for everything you've contributed to the world of video games, Inafking!

The maximum volume on these things is pretty low, I find them hard to hear. :(

The Shantae Kickstarter seems like it'll be funded so I wouldn't worry

It's weird. It sounds fine on my Mac, then sounds so soft on Windows. I'll try to address this.

I'm not sure what program you're listening to it on your Mac, but do you possibly have some sort of equalizer or preamp on that might be artificially making it sound louder?

Just a thought as I've had this issue in the past.

Absolutely everything on the site is much quieter on average (and sometimes nearly silent) compared to anything else I listen to or watch. I'd say a 20% increase in the volume would really help across the board.

I'm a backer, I hope they make a great game that will be out on TIME. I'm still waiting for Timmy Schafs' new adventure game.

I think it's safe to say that these 2 games certainly have a higher than regular chance of being released. But I think they are also the kinds of projects that should take as much time as they need to build a quality product.

Transparecy and good communication is key for these projects to remain successful at keeping backers happy. As far as Double Fine's kickstarter is concerned, they've mostly done right by their backers.

Yeah, in general I'd say you should put all audio, when possible (it may be hard for video content, I guess), through a Normalize to -3dB filter, possibly another compressor pass before that, I have a hard time hearing this stuff over the sound of the train I ride to work.

I have little attachment to Megaman, but I'm all for more JP developers turning to kickstarter. They desperately need the return of the "mid-tier" game as much as we do. I'm glad to see this is going to be substantially successful for them.

Interesting to hear him be totally okay with Capcom making more Megaman, though his reasoning is sound.

This is why Kickstarter was a bad idea. People threw a ton of money at this game, the developer responded by later asking for even more money, then the game came out and no one really liked it.
