40 minutes? Damn. I saw the movie and enjoyed it fine but I can't think of 40 minutes worth of stuff to day about it. Hope that Ben and Jan don't shit all over it because it truly doesn't deserve it. Could have used more action, though.
I feel like the Marvel-esque SEGA card at the beginning and the fact that they re-did Sonic entirely makes me think SEGA is interested in doing more movies and absolutely couldn't let this movie do badly.
Also I shudder to think of what Tails looked like before the redesign. Maybe we'll see it someday...
I'm gonna use this as an excuse to talk about my feelings on the movie.
Strictly by being a perfectly average and mostly unremarkable movie in general, it manages to put itself in the top 5 VG movies, if not top 3, of all time?
I liked Jim Carrey largely getting to do the Jim Carrey thing for the whole of his part in the movie, but I kinda wish he got to be 'Dr. Robotnik' as opposed to 'Jim Carrey-ass Jim Carrey'. Perhaps if the sequel indeed comes, he'll get to do more stuff. I guess Robotnik/Eggman never had *that* much character to begin with, but I feel the direction given was just 'do what you're known for'.
There's nothing particularly offensive going on in the movie, but it's not really all that fascinating? It's totally fine, really. The only thing that completely bothered me was the conflict that supposedly put a rift in the friendship between Tom & Sonic. He largely wants to find a place to 'be a real hero' or whatever, so the idea of moving away from his current home to another place is not entirely unreasonable. So, with Sonic getting so HEATED that he would want to leave a tiny town in Montana struck me as incredibly silly. Yeah, it's where Sonic lived since going to Earth, but he's only seeing the rose-colored version of the town. And even then, Tom doesn't actively hate Green Hills, but is merely bored and wants some new experiences. So the whole conflict bit (which, btw, is sooooo condensed and kinda played in the middle almost incidentally while Robotnik sends his murdertank to kill Tom and Sonic and then is mostly moved on from when Sonic is knocked out) resting on effectively "You shouldn't leave your hometown!" kinda irritates me.
But as a whole, it's an okay movie. It plays almost EXACTLY like Detective Pikachu, as it does with a lot of 'regular person meets a talking animal/thing/etc' movies. I feel like I got more from Pikachu than Sonic, but there's not that much to get upset about.
Next movie should be fully animated, except for Jim Carrey, in Sonic’s world. Knuckles should be the enemy working with Robotnick that then realizes he’s being played and turns against Robotnick, just like the original games. This is what I want for my future children

Oooooh, I forgot about that SEGA intro. It was blowing my mind at the time. Maybe they really do want to build something here.
The most OK of all OK movies I've ever OKed. Its hard to recommend, even to a fan as it barely makes references that all the cartoons happily do. It doesn't even meet the '3 laughs' metric for a good kids film with some adult scripting, its basically just a kids movie full stop.
Why is Olive Garden in a Sonic movie? Is it just a cash grab tie in or is there some history between Sonic and chain Italian food?
God, the product placement was so fucking overt in the movie. Straight just mentioning zillow and sitting on their homepage for just long enough was enough to make me realize what was happening.
These extremely safe, by the numbers, focus tested movies are the worst. The mad libs thing is hilarious because that's how kids movies are written now.
