I really, really love the Yakuza series, and I will be playing this soon enough as well, but I guess I'm kind of disappointed at just how much of a Yakuza derivative it is? I didn't quite expect Kimura Takuya to be fighting like Kiryû... It was ridiculous and cool when you had the Yakuza dudes doing it, but because Kimura is a really famous actor, there is a weird dissonance there for me. The blending of the over-the-top cartoony violence of Yakuza with a more grounded main character is somewhat puzzling to me.

Vinny mentioning the giant cones is funny, Majima actually hides under one in Yakuza Kiwami to ambush you.

This really does seem like an excellent entry point into Yakuza or atleast that style of game. I like the noir twist a lot, but these games always come down to two things: The side-missions look super repetitive and it's too much of a time investment. I started playing Yakuza 2 years ago and while I enjoyed it, these games don't keep my attention due to how much they stretch the good stuff out.

That pinball game is so weird! It just launches a whole separate game made by Mikito Ichikawa (Micky Albert) who has been making games since the 80s. Mindware was originally MNM Software, which worked on a bunch of games including a Star Wars game! Micky also worked closely with Yuzo Koshiro and developed the sound drivers for a lot of Koshiro's games. Now Micky works a lot on licensing pinball tables for Japan.

You can even buy Pinball Parlor on Steam.

Glad they did this Quick Look with just Alex and Vinny. I feel like just the two of them alone usually results in some of the best Quick Looks in this website, they have a great balance between being entertaining and still be informative, this Quick Look is a great example of that.

I like my tailing missions like i like japanese honorifics on english dubs : Don't like them at all, they feel wrong but they are not deal breakers. Clearly unnecessary fat that needs to be cut out from the steak.

Well no they had English VO in Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise which is by Yakuza team and is essentially a Yakuza game. Yakuza series sure but not the first game per se since that first one.

After cursory search, it seems karaoke is in fact not a part of Judgement. I can understand if they wanted to say Yagami wasn't that sort of dude, but it would have been fun to switch to his ex-Yakuza co-worker to bust a tune out. Looking forward to playing this a lot.

Tailing missions feel so video gamey I hate them. I feel like every tailing mission could just be a 15 second cutscene and you'd still get the same effect.

I don't mind tailing missions at all. If they're done well, they're super fun, like Thief 2 where you're following that lady and you need to make creative use of moss arrows to cover up metal walkways to keep noise down.

The yakuza franchise, which I do love by the way, glorifies criminals so much. Yes the Yakuza are usually the bad guys, but different yakuza are also the good guys. a lot of shit about how these criminals are honorable warriors and crap.

Which is fine, it's a fun world and a fun story, but for the makers of this franchise of all franchises to react strongly to someone getting a drug bust is a real crazy level of dissonance, Japan or no.

Speaking of big cones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnfpGb5GKhA

Also the thing to know about Japan and getting caught with/on drugs is that you can basically compare it to the worst #metoo stuff in the west. Think of Pierre Taki as Kevin Spacey, who was nonperson'd and replaced with Christopher Plummer at the last minute in All The Money In The World.

Great quick look, Alex & Vinny! A couple quick notes on stuff you asked. As mentioned above, Kamurocho is based on Kabuchiko - it even has that iconic red gate, which is always a popular tourist spot for people visiting. Also those giant street cones are a real thing, and they're also in the Yakuza games.

Personally I don't mind tailing missions if you're getting dialogue during them (overhearing the target's conversation, or talking to a companion over the phone, for exams). I think I probably prefer them to chase sequences. Still very much looking forward to this game, though - I like Yagami's style fighting style and his fashion sense. He gives me slight Akiyama vibes, but does feel like his own person from what I've seen so far. Really like his companion too, from early impressions.

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who heard that, they kinda glossed right past it! I couldn't tell if it was intentional or not.

Am I imagining things, or did the facial animation in the real-time cutscenes match the audio language? If so, that's a neat touch and I wonder if that's something that can be done automatically nowadays, or if they have to record mouth movement when recording the voice-over. The pre-rendered animations clearly didn't match the spoken English.

The localization team has said in interviews the lower fidelity voiced cutscenes (almost all cutscenes including the super cinematic ones are in-engine fyi) use software to automatically do lip sync. They apparently tweaked it some to get it to work better in English.

As a Canadian, I didn't realize how much the American spelling of "judgement" bothered me until I saw the spelling in the main menu's title. Normally I just insert the "e" as I read the word in text and never actually notice but that logo is actually annoying me with its missing "e".

I've enjoyed tailing missions in Assassin's Creed and stuff, but they're generally too long and actually nonsensical in GTA where you're swerving all over the road just far away enough from the target.

I was hoping for a Japanese L.A. Noire, but this looks like it was made with the same cookie cutter as the other Yakuza games, with your new player-character being interchangeable with Kiryuu Kazuma in practically every way. I've played one Yakuza game to completion (#3, circa 2010) and enjoyed it, but I don't need a dozen more of the same game. I'd love to see something more a mere reskin of the old formula from the otherwise charismatic studio. (I've even played their Binary Domain!)

uhhh because it's sick as hell to bust a dude's face over a car's bumper? Or to jump off the side of a building and chokehold-swing him into his goon buddies? Or kick his dang kneecaps in and then punch him directly in the face? Or to smash his dome in with a brick?

Like it's fine to not like a thing, but this has been the thing for almost 15 years? This team has been making this game for a very long time and new and old fans alike come to it because they make it incredibly radical to fight doofs who are looking for a fight. Add melodrama or mob drama or court drama as required, but the core of these games has not changed, and has not been advertised as having changed, since the very first. This is an insane complaint to make.

edit: Separately - the English VO weirds me out but they really do nail Saori's character. While playing with the Japanese VO, I was finding a lot of humour in imagining her character as a Japanese Aubrey Plaza, and the stiff deadpan they got for the English VO is almost exactly that.

Oh man, Crispin Freeman, Matt Mercer, and Cherami Leigh are in this dub? I might actually have to play it dubbed.

@aziridine: It's weird because it'd make me think that guy really did it the first time, and he was just such a good lawyer he managed to get him acquitted despite the incredibly high conviction rate. I'd probably hire that guy!
