Last week when I went to pick this up, the guy behind the counter was perplexed I didn't want Smash. Everyone wanted Smash. But I need my rolling balls.

I love this game (and am loving playing again with my kids) but I have to say that from a pure game design perspective there are parts that don't hold up as well, especially having played Donut County this year. The controls, timer, and getting bashed around / stuck all work against the trippy, carefree tone of the game. The constellation levels are usually not that great, either challenging you to pick up a set of unclear items or requiring you to precisely move around to pick up the right objects in order to get the biggest of one category. And there aren't actually all that many levels when playing this alone versus the later compilations.

None of those keep the game from being an amazing and unique thing that is worth playing, but they do stand out to me. Mainly makes me wish they really went back to the drawing board to make one of these games from the ground up.

I had always assumed each iteration of the Katamari series was liked less than the one that came before it.

I have endless love for the initial game, and it holds up insanely well to this day since it's just a pure concept carried simply by how fun that one concept is and how charming every single thing around it was. But each game after it tried to build on the worst part of the game to me, the constellations. It couldn't be just left as a fun game with light objectives you were clearly intended to blow right past, they kept trying to force more of a structure to what you were doing which just ruined the appeal to me in a big way.

now that this is out there's nothing I want more than we love katamari on the switch, and also an amiibo of the prince. I'd give my life for the prince.

Hopefully they release the follow up to this at some point. The original blew my mind when it came out, so unique and fun.

Sound track is phenomenal. I second the idea of a Prince amibo...that be fantastic!

I haven't played any of these games, but have always wanted to atleast try the first one. I'll probably end up getting this, looks like a very refreshing game to play.

Kind of bummed about the price point. I'd love to pick this up but for what it costs, I'd prefer a collection, or for one of the later games to be re-released.

Man, I am SO grateful that Katamari has made it this far without some shitbag forcing texture filtering into it. Yuck. I bet the PC port would look hilarious when run through something like Enbseries though...

Doubt anyone will see this before watching the QL, but if you haven't played Katamari Damacy but plan to, then don't watch the last ~5min of this video. Playing that level for the first time without knowing what was going on was a really memorable and joyful (and very short) moment for me.
