Kerbal: Project B.E.A.S.T

Kerbal: Project B.E.A.S.T: Part 08

It's a long episode but it's the only way to tell the true tale of Jack and Eridolin.

No, this actually _is_ rocket science, thank you very much.

Anyone have a list of the mods they're using? That one that tells you your apoapsis and periapsis height seems essential.

VINNY!!'

This series does not end until every Kerbal is either returned safely to Kerbin or gravity catapulted into the Kerbol.

Saw a video a few years ago in which landing gear was used to grab derelict craft. Would like to see a successful rescue mission of at least one brave kerbalnaut, who's bones have definitely wasted away.

Does it make a difference to wait that long to burn that rocket and reduce speed going back? I would have thought you could burn retrograde way earlier in the return trajectory and still have about the same effect, but I could be wrong. And it sure seemed like waiting till the very last second to burn that remaining fuel, practically when they were in the atmosphere, was what did Jack in. They had a minute plus fuel to burn and waited until they were half a minute from Kerbin.

Kerbal Engineer

Anyways, the mistakes they were doing happened because of wrong assumptions and are easy to fix. It sounds like they have Kerbal Hotline set-up so they won't end up wasting time repeating same mistakes over and over again.I'm confident that by the next video they have moved onto testing the parachute integrity by releasing it while going too fast.

I love this series. I hope it continues as long they want it to.

Can someone please explain to me what happens because I'm not sure why those results happened. Spoiler it if needed.

Also, how many people have they left in orbit, I thought I counted 8 but that can't be right.

It speaks volumes that so soon after their first mission they were able to recreate the same flight with near-clinical accuracy in half the time, despite trying to get to that point for seven episodes prior. It shows that the crew's successes aren't just dumb luck, they're actually learning!

...sort of...

When your orbit is nearly circular (periapsis = 80km; apoapsis = 84km), the difference is negligible in terms of delta-v. No need to wait for the Mun to come around.

Vinny has a serious problem of constant insisting on being as close to an object as possible before starting his retro burn. Several ships have exploded because of this.

They should install Trajectories so they can see when their craft will hit atmosphere for aerobraking. The vanilla trajectories aren't accurate.

this is the greatest show. This show must never end. I can only see bigger ships causing bigger explosions. They do seem to be making great progress, and quickly. I'm no rocket scientist but I can't imagine they're doing everything right. However, they've gotten there and back.....mostly.

@vinny you are REALLY starting to get the hang of this! Bravo, sir!

KSP Tips V2:

  1. Get rid of your mono-propellant and RCS-thrusters. A couple of reaction wheels placed in a way that does NOT put one between engine and its fuel source is plenty for what you want to do. RCS-thrusters + mono-propellant is good only really for docking maneuvers.
  2. Put any stuff like sensors, reaction wheels, antennas, ladders, lander legs, lights, or any other stuff (except for what is absolutely necessary - i.e. chutes, air brakes, heat shield, etc.) on any other stage besides that last "Get back to Kerbin" stage. You want that stage as light as possible so drop all that non-essential stuff when you first launch back off the Mun. When you leave the Mun, you should be on your last 2 stages - the stage with your fuel and rocket engine, and the stage with just the capsule pod + heat shield + parachutes.
  3. Heat dissipation stuff is only necessary if you're going to be burning one of the extremely efficient, but weak engines in space for a very long time, like the nuclear powered "uses liquid fuel only (no oxidizer)" engine. The reason I mention "in space" is because in space there's no air to help cool a rocket off as it is fired. The radiators help get rid of the heat so the rocket can burn longer without exploding like it would if you left it running for too long.
  4. Make your Mun-Lander stage wide NOT thin. A skinny pole ship tips over. A fat hockey puck ship does not. You can make it "fat" by adding engines / fuel tanks around your center staging and putting the lander legs on those surrounding parts.
  5. There is another way to slow yourself down for that last stage besides the orange "slow down" parachutes and the blue "STOP" parachutes, but it adds some weight.

P.S. - Scott Manley is the baddest dude around when it comes to Kerbal Space Program!

This is easily one of the most entertaining shows on Giantbomb in a long while. I really hope that you guys can think up another mission to embark on as soon as you accomplish this one in order to keep the series going, it's just too good to be ending anytime soon. :)

Oh, man! I really hope they're going to put up a Scott Manley video. That guy is fantastic, fun to listen to, and explains everything in a succinct and calm manner. I can't wait to see him do in an hour or two what they're taking nine episodes to turn out.

It does make a difference because gravity is an acceleration force, so it accelerates you for the time you are under its influence. Coming down slowly will have you experiencing that acceleration for longer a make you burn more fuel to counteract it. The perfect landing would be only burning at the last possible moment, but that is not something that is to be expected from them.

I know that the next episode has been recorded already, so I'll give this advice to others playing along at home, struggling to make it back to Kerbin.

1 word: Aerobraking.

*edit: tldr description of aerobraking: Taking multiple shallow passes through the upper atmosphere (maybe 50-60km) will let you burn off almost all of your speed for free. Multiple shallow passes keeps you from building up too much heat at any given time, so you're much less likely to burn up.

What's the highest delta V they can spend on a single pass with their current capsule/heat shield? Was there a way to break 2800ish m/s in a single pass?

By the way, I just updated the Project B.E.A.S.T. timeline. Today had only two launches—Part 6 had nine!—but they were certainly eventful!

I am Jack's violent flaming graphic death.
