Playdate: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX

I just started to listen to the Waypoint podcasts of KH and I really hope Vinny and Jan keep going. I want to understand what these games are and why they make Jan cry.

The talking heads bit is a really good bit.

It's happening.

If they plan to actually play through all this, I'm glad they didn't skip the first one because they last thing we need is a constant "this makes no sense" that is entirely self-inflicted. They're already so wildly overthinking this game (I think in LARGE part due to knowing "just enough to be dangerous" about later games) and should REALLY just take it as it comes a lot more. The island is just an island, it's literally Moana.

Jan and Vinny are a very fun combo though, and as a long-time KH fan I look forward to a non-ironic go at these games. If you just embrace the cheesiness they're a good time and they only get mechanically better as they go (minus 3 being too easy, I guess)!

Also, the shadowy dude that sounded familiar is BILLY ZANE. He, no joke, has one of favorite performances in the entire series. Dude chews the scenery HARD and it RULES.

The island they are on is just an island the kids play on. They have lives, and parents (!), on the mainland. Kyrie got washed up on this world, but Riku and Sora were born there.

I think Kingdom Hearts is a fun little series. It's not amazing, but it gets a lot more shit than it deserves. Yeah, story's dumb as shit and convoluted as hell, but that's part of the fun. Who cares? It's Final Fantasy x Disney, of course it's dumb.

I'd love to see the entire series played through. With Jeff forced to participate in every episode and take quizzes on the lore.

Love the Jan and Vinny pairing.

God, I love it so much.

I love these games despite being an adult when they came out. The first one is the best one still- probably because the story is just anime but not completely up it's own butt yet. By the second main line game the story is nonsense and the gameplay is silly but I still find it fun because the nostalgia is so strong in it. They even somehow evoke nostalgia for the first game with it.

I haven't finished the third one yet. It's a weird one, but I like it for the most part so far. Even though it does what most games do now and has a lot of busy work.

Oh I think the second one is best by far. First one is pretty boring because 90% of the game is soulless, overly quiet Disney worlds where nothing really happens, with little sprinkles of anime thrown in. The gameplay is stilted and bad and the game is actively unfun on higher difficulties.

Kingdom Hearts 2 on the other hand, while the story is ridiculous, the gameplay is some next-level shit that they still haven't matched. The game is one of the best action RPGs I've ever played on the highest difficulty with some of the most fun bosses I've ever fought in any game EVER.

Before replaying through the series before KH3 came out, I had memories of liking KH1 and disliking the start of KH2 but thinking the gameplay was fun. Replaying both on their highest difficulties gave me two polar opposite experiences. KH1 was one of the most unfun, frustrating messes I've had to slog through, while I was delighted by each new challenge in KH2. The rest of the games just kind of meld together into a big meh slog.

I dunno what they did when they made KH2's combat, but they need to figure out that magic again. Because they haven't even come close since.

Please continue this series. Kingdom Hearts seems completely awful to me, but Vinny and Jan seem like the perfect pairing to riff on the dumb parts but still be patient enough to not just ignore everything the entire time. Vinny and Jan have a chemistry I haven't felt in a decade; this might as well have been a P4ER episode.

Man, I forget how boring the intro was. I remember also having trouble finding the right coconuts.

I hope, you will continue the series. This was great.

Man....this series is a lot better when we don't go into it with a shitty, millennial attitude...

it's almost like the story was never meant to expand beyond the first game and the rest was bolted on later and that's why it's not a good story. that said, i'd watch a whole series of this.

This was fun. Vinny and Jan play nice off each other and it's nice to see Jan share this game with Vinny. I'd love more, but just Vinny and Jan vibing with anything they are interested in would be great as well. Cheers.

Jan ended up with 3 which is my fav option. But thats for easy leveling at the end. Doubt it matters for a playdate but its fun to know

Vinny and Jan's concept of Kingdom Hearts actually being a therapy session of a middle aged man with extremely deep seated familial issues who used Disney/Square properties to cope with his trauma is legitimately so much better than what Kingdom Hearts story actually is.

Considering what it actually is could be summed up as "Nomura's fanfiction feat. Disney characters at the fringes," I believe it.

And this pairing is unstoppable as far as I'm concerned, so I'm throwing my lot in with "PLEASE KEEP GOING!"

I hope KH1 doesn't kill another Kingdom Hearts series on this website.

Just skip KH1. I love this series, but that platforming has NOT aged well in the 1st game.

My friend was recently telling me that Kingdom Hearts is really good. After watching this, I think he is full of shit.

I just rewatched it and Ben got that race first try with using the jump, also first try, he was ahead of his time! Although I love the chemistry between vinny and jan! keep up the good work!

I hope they make this a full playthrough and then go onto the second game. KH 1+2 are classics and this is a good combo for it.

Jan calling Chain of Memories turn based seems to fit in line with his quick look where he said KH3 had the most responsive menus in the series. Unironically, it seems like Vinny has a better grasp on Kingdom Hearts than Jan, or is at least willing to admit what he doesn't know.

I admit that the fantastic soundtrack sort of carries the whole franchise, but I am completely unironically a fan of KH 1, 2 and BBS.

God help me, but hearing the piano main theme makes me want to beat the games for like the fourth time. Being able to do so in 60 fps sounds enticing.

Also, the "tutorial" is not just a tutorial, it literally decides you entire upgrade path depending on your choices.

Jan seems so confused about everything that everything probably would run more smoothly if he had never played it :P

I think the best part of this video is Vinny making fun of the protagonists Gundam collection, meanwhile the world's largest Gundam collection is neatly arranged on special shelving on his basement wall.

I am so here for this. I know they are under no obligation to finish, but just like Drew/Dan and Metal Gear, its nice to watch someone who is super into this play and explain the game/elaborate story to someone who has no idea (like me).
