I absolutely love Jan's unironic, unabashed love for this series that the storytelling absolutely does not earn. To the rest of us, and I have played KH games in the past, I will defer to one of my favorite non-GB podcasts for how all this dialog comes across.
Sora: But then they made a copy of the data of your love.
Goofy: Even data can love?
Sora: Yes, Goofy, it's true. Even data can love.
Mickey: But what about all the demon kings who came here from the other dimensions? Will they have programmed the same data into their heart-systems?
Sora: Well Mickey, I'm not sure. The only way we can find out is by doing Pirates of the Carribien.
I deleted a comment complaining about things i don't understand to saying that there's a whole genre of Shakespeare fanfic retellings of pretty much everything. I think the entire Star Wars series has them published somewhere
Just remembered how god awful the VA for Riku did for this game. Seriously... what happened there.
During the first two games (+Chain of Memories) there was at least the prospect of the story tying together... at this point... it's distilled down to fan service and remember this remember that, and just creating moments that would make fans exclaim... if these moments had any decent shred of context... KH3 is an absolute trash fire.

Dude, think about how the story was actually nice and simple in the first game. Digestible, sad, heartwarming. Ansem was just Ansem. There was no Xehanort and all the bullshit that comes with that.
@mookalhoys: it didn't fail. It was a joke feature where he didn't pay attention to anything and hated the whole thing. Once that had run its course it ended. There's no world where Giant Bomb would take a KH playthrough seriously though, so there is no need for them to bring it back.
I hear people talking about the story of Kingdom Hearts and my eyes kinda glaze over making me wonder how the hell anyone can follow such a convoluted mess of incomprehensible bullcrap.
And then I remember that I have thousands of issues of comics from trying to follow the storylines of DC Comics for like a quarter of a century and even then some going back over older issues. I guess this handful of games is nothing compared to the minefield of retcons and incongruities from all those thousands of books over the decades. Marvel isn't much better either. X-men alone is a whole jungle of stories and timelines.
It also reminds me when a friend into Fate: Grand Order tried explaining the story of the Fate franchise. Years ago I remember it being some visual novel game where King Arthur becomes a girl and sleeps with some Japanese school boy while searching for the grail. It only got weirder from there from what I vaguely remembered and now Grand Order somehow delved deeper while selling online cards in a gacha game.
So I guess there are somehow deeper holes to fall down than following Kingdom Hearts.
Just so people know yes there are a lot of boss fights in this, but there is a section of this that is not a boss fight. Also, there are set pieces & environments that are actually new and not in main KH3 it just takes a while to get to them (so not the best paced but if you are patient it can be worth it).
Also, listen to Waypoint's podcasts and KH will make more sense.
I just noticed something, the characters in these cutscenes emote like Sims...
Edit: Holy shit the pacing is truly horrific in these cutscenes. Like, the dialogue, space between people ending their sentences, even the construction of the sentences just makes watching this completely baffling, meaning aside (which is also obviously nonsense). It's got a weird Shenmue or The Room quality to it. Even the combat has this weird stiltedness to it, nothing looks to flow or make sense at all.
@mookalhoys: I'm not about to search all of Giant Bomb's content from the past two years, but Ben has definitely made a crack about Kingdom Hearts fans not being able to take a joke.
I have never gotten the "it's for kids" argument. Mario is for kids, Pokemon is for kids, etc etc. Yet for some reason Kingdom Hearts, a series that's always prided itself on a DmC level of precision tight combat controls and hellish difficulty, is the only one that gets shit for it. Even in terms of the anime bullshit, this is the website that has a Dragon Ball podcast so why is one okay and not the other?
Gonna agree with Jan, the pacing on the new dialog is a lot better. And so is the voice acting performance. But most of the ReMind episode is just rewatching the old endgame cutscenes, which are all kind of atrocious. It makes me wonder what was going on with the production of that game, because the DLC content seems more well edited and polished.
I love Kingdom Hearts, flaws and all, but attempting to understand the story is a fool's errand. Its world has no rules and never before has a narrative so blatantly been made up as it went along. KH3's story made enough sense, I guess, but this DLC's attempt to "clarify" certain aspects of it were unnecessary and nonsensical and had me more confused than I ever cared to be. At this point, I find it easier and more fun to smile at how goddamn sincere it all is, despite its ridiculousness, and just enjoy the ride and the sights before me. They think that they're creating some real high drama here. Meanwhile, Donald Duck and Goofy have prominent roles.
The DLC is pretty good, although, I think that some of the more interesting gameplay additions were patched in for free with it. No idea how the extra boss battles are. My lvl 10 Sora stands no chance against them.
Why is Mickey's face stuck in that horrifying smile regardless of what emotion he's feeling in one cutscene, but then in another cutscene he's able to move his mouth to various other expressions?
@mookalhoys: you say you just want some discourse but this seems a lot like you're trying to pick a fight with someone because they like a thing. Like it or not, KH fans exist. It's easy to dunk on and has some obvious quirks, but it isn't objectively a bad series when it has millions of fans. You are allowed to think it's garbage content, but taste policing is a bad look.
It's also pretty well understood at this point that Kingdom Heartache was a joke feature that was never meant to be a full serious playthrough of the series. That's fine, I thought it was a fun joke for a while that simply ran its course.
This quick look was hilarious btw. Loved Ben and Jan's reactions here to all the wacky shit, and that cutscene skip was glorious.
