Quick Look: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

I'm a huge fan of the later Guardians comics, I am looking forward to seeing how this gets rated

Guardians is a comic book first not MCU.

Gamora looking like the comic is a hint of that.

Not everything needs to be tied to. MCU.

Spider-man games is not Tom Holland because it’s not based on MCU

I can understand the characters not looking like the MCU actors; but doe they have to look like over tired syphilitics' with circles under their eyes

The over-swaying leather jacket is weird. Like Dead or Alive boob physics have been applied to it. Other than that I think this looks very good.

Rorie keeps saying Chris Pratt voiced What If but he absolutely did not lol

The writing actually seems pretty snappy to me, even if there is an awful lot of it. Like half the jokes were landing which in video game terms makes this pretty impressive.

Surprisingly doesn't look too bad.

The biggest niggle I have is that the characters look really generic and uninteresting. Kinda like generic NPC's in any other game. I totally understand that they don't look like the actors from the movies but would it be too much work to give them a bit of personality?

Never thought I'd see Star Wars: The Old Republic's insipid take on Star Fox again... but here we are.

This doesn't look terrible, but it's not Deus Ex so -103489932 out of 10 stars.

Looks good. Gonna change that outfit as soon as I can but others don't bother me. Don't get why people get all worked up about not looking like mcu. Guess it doesn't bother me due to growing up with many different variants of characters from comics/alternate universes and such. Reviews don't seem that bad

I don't mind that it's not the MCU likenesses.

They at least look like their own takes on the characters, or at least much more than in the Avengers game.

Well, and also because Chris Pratt is a shitty person.

The reason it's not licensed voices and images is because this isn't MCU continuity. if it's not MCU then they don't want to confuse people into thinking it's related to the movies.

sorry to be this guy but Rorie not understanding how expensive it would be to get the Guardians cast to do a 12 hours game (and how that differs from a short episode of What If) drives me up a wall. Its not an oversight. Its 100% intentional both in line with Square Enix's strategy to try and differentiate their Marvel games from the MCU (not going super well so far it seems) and the fact that games are so expensive to make in the first place they don't have an extra $20 million just lying around to pay Bradley Freaking Cooper to voice the racoon.

GOD I miss Alex and Vinny and Brad and Ben

I don't think Disney would even let a video game company take a serious crack at MCU material, and if they did, the oversight would be too overbearing.

Macklelord is taking some getting used to but I do like that they gave the raccoon a chin braid

This looks like the sort of focused 15-ish hour campaign that Avengers should have been. The main campaign of Avengers was great, but it was a few hours of content surrounded by generic service-game filler.

The game is it's own thing separate from the MCU and that is OK. I like that it seems to be drawing a lot of stuff from Abnett and Lanning's run in the comics.

I'm normally mostly okay with Rorie, but he seemed like a poor choice to have on this QL. It's fine being negative about the game, but constantly talking over other people and the game itself to nitpick every conceivable thing happening in the game is rough, especially when Jan seemed excited for the game but barely spoke at all.

Jeff sure did determine a lot about the game before the title card even showed up! LOL

Not sure why the guys were so dour about this game. It looks totally fine - good, even. There was definitely too much cutscene in this hour video, though. Even Uncharted has a better cutscene to gameplay ratio.

Consensus around this game seems to be that if you want a fun, sometimes emotionally compelling story that looks gorgeous and has fun music, this is the game for you. The more negative takes seem to be less interested in that and find the gameplay a little simple or repetitive. Overall, reviewing pretty well though despite this Quick Look's mostly dour approach!

I enjoy GB when they give games a fair shake (I was never a fan of Jeff G's constant negativity), and if Rorie is the type of gamer to skip cutscenes then he shouldn't have been chosen to quick look a game that is mostly story focused like this. It's not like the marketing didn't let you know what this game would be ahead of time. If it's not your bag, I guess don't rag on the game so much and bring all that negative energy. People still like to be excited about games, and some of us like these types of games. That said, maybe it's not $60 worth of gameplay, but I still think it looks like a fun time.

That "skip dialog line-by-line" thing that Rorie keeps mentioning is definitely not industry standard. It's mostly an RPG and Adventure game thing, if I'm not mistaken. The only other games I think have ever done are the newer Assassin's Creed games?

As someone who is kind of over the MCU but still likes comic book games. I'm glad they aren't going with the actors from the movies and making this its own thing.

Disney has the film/TV rights to Marvel stuff with the exception of the things that Sony owns. Marvel licenses out their stuff to developers for games, etc.

As if it was needed, here is more proof that Square Enix is the worst publisher/dev company in the games game. Theyre a laughing stock. Just sell your company and stop embarrassing yourselves.

The latest Tomb Raider and Deus Ex games were pretty good.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider might've had a lot (a lot) of pacing and quality control issues but even that wasn't anything near a bad or troubled game. FFVIIR was spectacular, especially when you consider all the ways it could have gone wrong. FFXIV is by pretty much any measure the most popular MMO since World of Warcraft, if not the clear Number One at the moment. Kingdom Hearts III might have been a huge mess but it was the huge mess Kingdom Hearts fans wanted. Likewise, Nier: Automata charmed the pants off people despite the odds being quite stacked against it.

Square Enix hosts maybe the weirdest earnings calls in the world but their development teams seem pretty strong despite the weird abusive relationship corporate seems to have with creative.

I had completely forgotten about this game until I woke up and saw the reviews on Twitter.

It seems *very* story heavy, and I’m torn on how I feel about that. The first Guardians movie is top tier Marvel for me and the second is bottom tier.

Its a miserable first impression.

I think I'll stick with the movies.

I know it may seem unfair, but I can't imagine Matt being a good choice for this game. I was keen to see GB's impression of it.

I'm with Jan, this actually looks neat. Don't think I'll pay full price, though.
