This is one of the only PS1 games I played back in the day, I got 100% completion multiple times. I have a ton of nostalgia for this game, I'm really looking forward to the remake. I don't expect it to be amazing, but I expect to really enjoy it!
I randomly got a timed demo disk for this in the mail back in '97 or whatever it was and absolutely fell in love with MediEvil. It just really clicked with me and I'm not entirely sure why. I'm pretty excited to pick this up. I am also curious to see what people think of it today. MediEvil wasn't mind blowing in the 90s and it won't be mind blowing now, with its basic combat and platforming and early 3D camera. They don't really make games like this anymore and I wonder if people will be into it.
I also played this on an early demo disc for the PS1. I think it might have been a timed demo.
Speaking of PS1 demos, anyone remember that creepy as fuck T-Rex tech demo they had on some ps1 demo disc? You could like trigger animations with some buttons, they had one for a manta ray too I think. Super impressive graphically but it always scared the shit out of me.
I'm with Abby in that I love the aesthetics and presentation of this game, the price tag is pretty modest too. I'm just worried about the difficulty since I usually bounce off of games for having to repeat large sections due to BS. I've become too much of a content tourist lol
I really don't think the Spyro- games aged that well. I never played them as a kid, and started playing based on Dan's recommendation. Was supremely disappointed by how incredibly repetitive the games were. Not just level to level, but also every one of those games were almost exactly the same game. The Chrash games weren't necessarily the best ones either, but at least they had some variety of gameplay.
Im in the same boat as you. Though, I did play Spyro at a friend's occasionally, but never finished it or anything. I bough Spyro and Crash on PC recently, played the first game from each for a bit, and neither feels good to play imo.
I feel like I'm the only one who didn't like the Spyro remakes. I loved them back then, but it just feels so hollow. And also all of the mini-games are terrible.
Everyone on the GB staff constantly using remaster and remake interchangeably irritates me no end. This isn't an HD remaster, its a straight up remake. Unfortunately its also a disappointing one.
I played the shit outta the demo of this game back in the day but I don’t think I ever bought the full game for some reason. I don’t know why either - I loved that demo.
I remember not having fun when I rented this game as a kid and just used the Level Select cheat. Aesthetically it looks great but yeah this gameplay is still bad.
My Mom and I loved Medievil when i was a kid we never beat it but we had fun playing it i'm bummed it only on playstation makes sense why but i only have a pc and a XB1X at the moment
I remember loving this game back in the day and this looks quite true to the original except with a more zoomed in camera iirc. I'm very happy this exists and will probably pick it up when I have less on my plate.
MediEvil was a part of my childhood growing up, maybe it was just more of a Aus/UK thing, who knows. But my main PS1 games I cycled through were often just MGS, Gran Turismo and this. It was a weird game but I really enjoyed the world and premise. It was one of the first games to teach me about difficult boss fights.
Is it just me or does Dan seem a little burnt out lately? I don't want to sound critical, but I feel like 9 times out of 10 the quick looks that he leads are basically just him saying "eh, you know what it is. It's fine I guess." I know that there's not always a lot to say about games like this, but, one of the cool things about Giant Bomb is that they seem to have the freedom to only cover things they care about.
This isn't the best example of it, but it's a trend I've noticed. There have been a few Dan lead QL's that left me wondering why they even posted it. I don't remember the name, but there was a Viking themed platformer a few months back. Dan played it for like 12 minutes, hit a progression bug, and then just wrapped up like "Whatever, you get the idea of the game." I'm just curious what service they see a video like this providing their audience.
Hmm, I was wondering why this game wasn't a survival horror like I thought it was. Then I realized it was not the same as Parasite Eve, and my brain had been bucketing those two games together as the same thing for the past twenty years.
Not sure about the game, but as someone who never had a Playstation back in the day, I'm enjoying all the stories in the comments about people playing this back in the day.
Everybody as a kid had that one game they never purchased but played a one-level demo of over and over and over. I love that.
I'm all about these pretty-fied Sony remakes lately. Shame that this one isn't a full-on collection like Spyro and Crash, but it's all good. I hope we get more 1:1 remakes in the same vein... Twisted Metal, perhaps? ... Irritating Stick?
Edit: And I'm sold on this one. I only ever played the demo back in the day, but I think I missed out. This looks really fun, and I adore the faux-Burton look.
MediEvil is one of those games where I think the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Individually, none of the levels are all that special, but MediEvil likes to change things up a lot. There's a healthy mixture of linear levels vs more open ones, a few branching paths on the world map, and the game rotates pretty frequently between smaller combat gauntlets, action platforming, and more puzzle-themed levels (ex: the village and the hedge maze).
Would it hold up as a $60 game today? Not really. The combat was extremely simplistic even back when it first came out and, while there's enough content that you're probably not beating it in a single sitting, there's really no immediate replay value. I think it's still fun enough that the $30 price point seems reasonable though.
I didn't play much of MediEvil when it originally came out. I finally played through the game properly about a month ago because the folks at RetroAchievements made some achievements for the PS1 version. It was kind of rough at times, but in the end I saw why it's fondly remembered and got 100% completion.
I can't NOT think about Maximo whenever I hear about this game. And vice-versa!
@convox I remember that being the first ever console game I played that didn't have "Doug from accounting"-level voice acting, and absolutely ADORED the franchise. I think the licensing is completely borked, and that's why it's never seen a remake.
This was one of those games that i loved reading about & watching screenshots of back when i didn't have a console. My neighbor had a PS1 and we played all sorts of cool games on there, but platformers weren't really his thing so i mostly experienced those colorful artstyles and goofy character designs through the screenshots in the magazine i was subscribed to.
Sure, it might not be among the first group of iconic platformers, but i definitly think this has merit to exist just like Voodoo Vince has merit to exist in this day & age. There's a nice lighthearted goofy vibe coming from this game. The walk animation of Daniel is clunky in a way that fits a skeleton. And i agree with my comment-neighbor here. For some reason this game does share mindspace with Maximo.
I had the exact same experience with the first Spyro remake. It's cool, for a couple hours.
Im in the same boat as you. Though, I did play Spyro at a friend's occasionally, but never finished it or anything. I bough Spyro and Crash on PC recently, played the first game from each for a bit, and neither feels good to play imo.
I mean I do think Spyro feels pretty good. It's a very tight platformer, it's just as basic as they get.
