Up until the last episode I could sort of believe the story of these games. Then the President's infodump happened, and it only gets crazier.

It definitely seems like a good idea to have Drew play so many sections back to back. Seems to help a lot with keeping track of the story.

I don't mind at all that they recorded a bunch on the same day. Reminds me of the Endurance Runs, and like Drew said that's probably better for all the crazy info dumps.

I just finished Metal Gear Rising for the first time and HOLY SHIT.

I don't normally enjoy "character action," but that game grows on you hard. Then it fucking explodes at the end in the most awesome dumb way. Really great game.

Edit: Just finished the episode and damn that good. Perfect chunk of events, but I feel bad for Drew having to stew on what's going on. Under normal circumstances I think the player would HAVE to keep playing. Props to Drew and Dan and thanks!

@danryckert Hey Dan just wanna let you know you can run AND shoot at the same time in MGS2. Holding Square and moving while pressing L1 lets you move while aiming. Also L1 is also auto aim that works both in Third and First Person.

What's happening with Vamp is that he's using a knife to pin down your shadow so you can't move. What you're supposed to do is shoot out the lights so you don't cast a shadow.

Ok this might have been asked before, but I'm finally about to start Metal Gear Scanlon 2 from the first episode and I need to be prepared - is watching this series as frustrating as the first? I'll watch either way but I don't want to get my hopes up just for more heartbreak.

MGScanlon made me pull the trigger on subscribing and it was sooooooo disappointing to see Drew fumble and try to brute force his way through. Dan made the point somewhere in the first run that he spent hours in the demo dicking around with the guards and learning just how much you could do - that was the point!! I understand time constraints and whatnot but Drew never getting a handle on the mechanics made it really painful to watch, and then blaming it on dated controls and whatever else was a major, major cop out.

@elflaconeri: Drew does much, much better in this series. However, you can almost completely attribute that to better controls which pretty much negates your point.

Not to say that he wasn't brute forcing the first game, but the dated, bad for 1998 controls caused that frustration. With the leeway that the slightly more up to standard gameplay allows, Drew has been able get a better grasp of the systems and play smarter. There haven't been any boss fights that have taken more than 3 or 4 tries at this point I would say. Also probably helps that MGS2 is in generally a much easier game than the original regardless of the controls.

I really hope Drew does a video at the end of this series where he tries to explain the entire story as he knows it. So batshit.

So, yes. Drew still struggles with the controls at times, but Drew and Dan talk it out during one of the earlier episodes, like episode 6 or something. Drew feels like he's not being entertaining if he slowly goes around and shoots people and does stealth stuff. Dan tells him that that's the game and you've got to play like that if you don't want to get frustrated.

I don't think you'll ever see Drew start messing around with holding people up or doing anything other than the bare minimum when it comes to enemy encounters. And I think that's just because Drew's that kind of guy, efficient and what not.

That being said, Drew has done really well. He hasn't gotten stuck on any boss fight, maybe 1 or 2 deaths max per boss.

This series is good for me because I'm in the same boat as Drew. I never played this series, and have no idea what's going on, so I go as Drew and Dan go.

THERE IS ONE THING. I'm starting to wonder if Drew needs to invert the controls or something, because it seems like every time he goes to look around he looks the opposite way from where he needs to look, like up or down or whatever. And it really became evident in the water part in this episode. Like, I don't exactly know how bad the underwater control is, but seriously, that was 3 out of 3 for running into bombs.

So I played through MGS 2 & 3 for the first time recently and for somebody who didn't play those games back when they came out, the controls are really hard to adjust to. It's a legitimate excuse for not being great at the games. I actually played through on easy and the controls made up for it.

Even as a kid back in 2001, I was well aware that Vamp was anime as fuck.

Oddly enough, he's still pretty cool.

For me, this whole thing is just setting up for that MGS 3 ending. Those twists and reveals. It's like a big reward for putting up with the nuttery of MGS 2. I can't wait for Drew to see it all.

@drewbert This was an all-time great Metal Gear Scanlon.

Drew managed to be both infuriating to watch yet still got it done reasonably well. You watched a lot of cutscenes and codec calls, got Otacon's backstory, found out Olga's the ninja and Snake be like "see ya dude", and then it's over.

I'm hoping for at most 2 more episodes and then you're done with MGS2. It's a lot of cutscenes though. If you're planning on another 3 1/2 hour marathon like with MGS1 you could probably finish the game in that amount of time, maybe less if you don't die a ton. Although if you want to have talks with Dan I'd suggest either parceling it up into more episodes or pausing the game after the info-dumps and recapping.

Otacon has a lot of issues. I don't want to imagine how creepy Strangelove and Huey are going to get in Phantom Pain. Was already implied that Huey betrayed Big Boss.

I haven't played MGS2 in 12 years, this has been great.

@soundlug: Given that Huey is in a wheelchair, I'd think his dick doesn't work. So maybe something along those lines.

Now... the real shit begins... I can't wait for next episode!

With a few minor hiccups this was a really smooth episode, and covered a lot of ground, and I'm so glad you did.

When the dudes who put together the Game Of Thrones HBO show always say "our entire ambition with the series was to get to the Red Wedding, if we could get there we would die happy," the next episode of Metal Gear Scanlon is that moment. It's what I've been anxiously anticipating since the very first episode of this entire series. I'm so fucking excited to see Drew's reaction, I can hardly contain myself.

Of course Drew would be the guy to fight vamp with a Nikita!

I don't think you can get two more episodes out of what is left, I think they should do the live finale next
