@bhlaab: You are absolutely right. And I absolutely adore it for that very reason. I could care less about the lack of game play, the 20 million hours of over done, silly cut scenes and the ridiculous nature of the whole thing. If more games came out following this exact sort of style I would be quite happy.

But, of course, I realize that I am in the massive minority when it comes to this opinion. I do not try to tell people they must like the game as I do, for I recognize wholly it is an acquired taste.

I have always been about the story of a game. Its why say the ending for me3 ruined the entire series for me so harshly. (though I never joined in the 'change the ending' i just hated it). Its why I enjoyed Heavy Rain, its why I find jrpgs to be a lot of fun, cliches and all.

I am about as big a fan of MGS as exists outside of Dan (who I will allow is bigger). Yet I was a fan of the story that was told in 1 and 2. The joke has been made on bombcasts (by Jeff or someone) but to me, this is not MGS 3. The third game in the series is, and was for me, 4.

I never even beat 3 because it was always the story that I was interested in, and this game did not really advance it. All the answers you finally get in 4? Those are what I wanted from a mgs 3.

Which isn't to say MG3 isn't a good game or, indeed, has importance in the story. I will even allow that the over all consensus I have heard that this is the best of the MGS series might be true.

For me though? Someone to whom the story of these games was all important, was why I bought my ps3 and so on? MGS4 remains the best of the series for me. A game which if nothing else is the gold standard for how you wrap up a series and create an ending.

That said. I'm absolutely looking forward to this as, in large part, everything here will be new to me. Though there are still parts in MGS4 I am waiting to see them get to purely to see, I assume, Dan gush over them the way I did when I saw them.

No spoilers. But if your a fan of the series ridiculous over the top story as I am, you'll know the ones in the ending I mean.

That said, hopefully I was wrong all those years ago in not bothering with 3, and there are some fanboy moments to have from this game too.

There's so much stuff that won't make a lick of sense in MGS4 if you haven't played MGS3, so I dunno how you can be a self professed fan and yet not have finished what is perhaps one of the most important games in the series.

@sor_eddie: Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was Kojima's intention to strip down the dialogue. I believe you get a lot more background on the bosses and more if you call up characters on the codec. The background stuff is there but you'll have to look it up yourself.

Yeah main story wise most of the bosses are just "I'M REALLY FUCKIN' WEIRD LET'S FIGHT" which after the overwrought nonsense of MGS2 I was kinda stoked for some regular nonsense in MGS3.

But there are a ton of codec calls explaining just about everything.

Anyone remember what he now missed from under the bridge? I have gotten used to him freaking out, but it was kind of frustrating seeing him completely forget about it, even with Dan pointing it out twice:P

That being said, I struggled ALLOT with this game. ONE because of the camera and lack of radar/reliance on it in 1 and 2, and TWO because am pretty shit at 3rd person stealth in general and this game is ALL sneaking:P

Awesome first episode. So pumped to see this, MGS3 is my favorite of the series and probably of all time. The Boss is so fucking good, probably my favorite character in all of video games. Man this is the best video series, thanks so much guys! :D

I was hoping they'd get to the opening credits, good call by Dan, leaving off anywhere else would have been just WRONG. I love MGS3, it was my first one , and I think the characters are - by far - the coolest in the series. Such a good game.

@jeryhn88: You have way more tools for stealth in this one but I also feel like this is the start of the series not really caring at all for whether or not you bother with any of it. Guards are finite, you can take more shots, and CQC is really powerful.

I've been looking forward to this... I played MGS3 up until the bridge scene where you fall off and have to fix yourself up. I said "FUCK THAT SHIT" when I realized how much it wanted me to do to accomplish the task, saved the game, shut it off intending to come back and never did. I suspect Drew has more patience and even has the perfect mindset for that (See his notes for flight sims) so I'll finally be able to see the rest of the game through him.

there are so many reasons why youre crazy i dont even want to begin. MGS4 isnt even a video game its like...like, a "video object"

Saying something isn't a video game isn't a critique. It's like...like a lazy, regurgitated internet meme.

Playing through MGS3 at the minute after playing it all those years ago. What struck me as odd was just how bad the voice acting is. Stilted, awkward delivery to match the lip sync which doesn't match up regardless. Still, great game though.

I had no idea that Subsistence added full camera movement. That was a huge reason as to why I didn't like the gameplay of this game when I first played it.

The first 10-20 minutes of this game are ROUGH. There is absolutely no reason for it to immediately give you this huge info dump literally 5 minutes after starting the game. That's just bad writing. I know no one ever told Kojima less is more but for christs sake, less is more.

Luckily, everything is after that story wise is pretty fucking great. The introduction to the Cobra Unit is fantastic and I don't think I need to say that Snake Eater is single coolest title sequence in video game history.

Gameplay wise, Drew did pretty well for such a long lay off. The biggest problem to me, besides the whole learning how to properly stand up thing, is his reaction time. There were times in this episode where he was spotted and just kind of froze up when if he shot the dude real quick it would have saved a lot of headache.

It's cool that @drewbert already knew about the Mossad pistol technique that ocelot used. There's actually special dialogue where snake explains that and also why he recommended using a revolver if Drew would have contacted para-medic after that scene.

@danryckert don't forget to encourage more radio calls for max content! Especially when drew picks up the instant ramen!

In hindsight, you were very wrong all those years ago. There are things in 3 that do come up in 4 that you're going to wish you had known when you played 4.

@danryckert@drewbert MGScanlon 3 makes my heart sing! But please, please, PLEASE! Go through basic actions again for this game. it's under the SPECIAL menu, and it will address a lot of things Dan may have forgotten or misremembered (e.g. CQC is not done with square!)

Keep up the awesome work guys!

What I mean is that they have absolutely no bearing on the game and just feel arbitrary. Like, you could remove the entire Cobra Unit from the game and it would make no difference to the plot. It just feels like Kojima went "well, people expect weird bosses" and just shoved some random gimmick dudes in to meet a quota. Whereas in the previous games, all the bosses are key to the story and interact with the plot in significant ways. You can't have MGS1 without all of Fox Hound. You can't have MGS2 without Fortune, Fat Man, or Vamp. But you can sure as hell have MGS3 without Bee Man or Spider Guy or Old Dude or etc

There's also a LOT of boss battles, especially compared to MGS2.

TBH I actually think this is the worst of the four mainline MGS games. All the new gameplay mechanics are super half-baked, almost all of the bosses are paper thin (hell, one of the bosses isn't even mentioned in a single line of dialogue until fought, and is then never spoken of again), and the plot is fairly meandering until the end of the 2nd act. I feel like people who like MGS3 the best generally don't like the rest of the series that much, since MGS3 is the most "western" and most shooter-y of the series. Still wanna see Drew play it tho :P

MGS is my favourite series with MGS3 being my favourite game. Carry on being wrong.

It was probably synced to the original Japanese dialogue and they didn't bother to reanimate it for the localization. This was before the FFXIII era after all.

@bladededge: Before more people pile on and tell you how wrong you are, I'll just say I can totally relate. I played through MGS3 about 10 years ago but wasn't invested in the story nearly as much as 1 and 2 due to the time period and different characters. I only played 4 recently (and really enjoyed it) thanks to this video series. But because of not getting into 3's story, I never played Peace Walker or have plans on playing 5. Maybe that'll change based on reviews for 5 and how this video series goes, we'll see.

Putting tranquilized animals in cages is actually very handy, because they will never spoil. I only found that out late in my play through, and I wished I knew it earlier.

Also, you can increase your max life by only partially healing a wound, and then let the rest of the wound heal over time.
