When Drew's trying to play stealthily I think there's no harm in Dan urging him to try the tranq. gun (Mk22). It's why that gun is there, and using bullets makes sneaking so much harder.

That said I'd put money on Drew beating The End with the ThermGs and grenades. Have a feeling he's going to really hate it.

@TechnoSyndrome: If Drew didn't bother to pay attention to anything the game had told him by now about the systems in place I don't think he's going to take much away from that big ass block of text, much to everybody's detriment.

Some of it is not even a lack of 'getting' the game, it's just really, really dumb decision making.

To Dan and Drew watching "Edge of Tomorrow" is worth watching because it is a very good scifi film. Not just because Emily Blunt is in it.

It is a shame that the film wasnt that successful when it came out.

Also I think that Drew is kinda avoiding using stealth which is kinda essential to playing the older metal gear solid games. Though it does seem that not a lot of people at Giant Bomb are fans of stealth games.

Six episodes in and Drew finds out what the "Caution" alert state means. If that isn't a perfect summation of this entire series, I don't know what is.

Also, if somebody makes a T-shirt of this series it needs to have an H button and a grenade somewhere on it.

Drew is really awful, but I've never heard of anyone beating The End with grenades. The next episode should show us how that works out.

The amount of downright rudeness and hostility in these comments (towards two people playing a video game)is astounding. It makes me sad.

Just started watching the episode and noticed Dan mentioning to Drew about the camo thing which is an excellent pro tip. Another reminder that Dan should mention to Drew is that he has a few sensors that sorta equate to the overhead map from the previous games.

  • Drew should have the Sonar sensor that will give him a good indication of what's around him, just make sure to let him know that if guards are close to him they might hear the sonar go off.
  • Drew is also arguably not using one of the most important tools in the game the A.P sensor which will emit beeps the closer an enemy gets.
  • He also has the thermal gogs which can be used to spot guards in areas where enemies might be well camouflaged in there surrounding areas. For example when Drew was going down to the underground tunnel he could of used the thermal goggles and used the 360 camera to maybe spot guards around the map to get a better sight of them.

Not entire sure how many tips Dan would like to give Drew but seems like Drew is in such perpetual fear when playing this game that he doesn't want to explore and check out the other stuff in his inventory. Either way super enjoying the play through no matter how Drew wants to tackle it since it is his play through.

I love how long Drew's health bar is now because he's constantly getting hurt and dying.

After two full play-throughs of the game and 2 aborted ones, I never knew that's how your health bar increased. I just thought it went up after killing bosses.

@a_e_martin

Really bums me out too. I don't remember it being so hostile for MGS1 and 2. I was under the impression that we were all having fun.

It's mind boggling how majority of the complaints here are directed straight to Drew who doesn't even read the comments (for obvious spoilerific reasons).

People complaining to Dan rarely even bother to direct it to him by using his "giant bomb handle" so he would see he's mentioned in a comment. And the few comments that do are such ridiculous walls of text that no one in their right mind would spend their precious time reading them.

So once again, well done everyone!

Drew needs to go back to tranquilizer darts instead of using the normal gun. He keeps setting off alarms when he shoots an enemy but if he used tranquilizer darts the enemy won't know they are shot by it and fall asleep. Not immediately but it would make moving around the world WAY easier.

Boy, that is a super lame place to end the episode. There's nothing wrong with putting up a 2-3 hour episode :/

Also, I'll just say that I agree with everyone else in that Dan should stop being afraid of 'spoiling' gameplay mechanics. Drew fumbling around because he doesn't understand the way the mechanics even interact with each other is fun for neither the viewer nor Drew. Obviously don't touch story or boss-fight spoilers, but telling Drew when he's bleeding/lost his suppressor/low on stamina/using the wrong camo or reminding him that he has a tranq gun isn't going to offend anybody, and it'll certainly help relieve Drew's frustrations.

Shouldn't he be keeping tabs on that stuff himself? Don't coddle the boy, let him figure it out for himself!

@danryckertThink Drew would make it easier on himself tranqing fools rather than killing them as when they find a sleeping guard, no alert is started where as caution is initiated when a dead body is found,

Tranq gun! Tranq gun! Tranq gun! Feel like I say it every episode but it still keeps gnawing at me.

It also occurred to me today that there's going to be one really rough part if Drew keeps going the way he is. When he has to escort a basically useless Eva, I can see lots of killing her on accident, and getting really frustrated. I think without stealth, or at least without switching to non-lethal options, that will be a hard episode to watch.

Dan needs to just help Drew at this point. Don't tell him exactly what you want him to do but at least give him some suggestions. This completely hands off approach is painful for Drew, Dan and the viewer.

This 100%. Stuff like explaining how guns work, how camo works, how food works, how reinforcements work, how silencers work.

Plus drew somehow got into a "kill everything" mode which is actually taking longer. He could simply shoot a guy ANYWHERE with an MK22 and wait a few seconds for him to pass out instead of body shotting guy after guy. I mean he can play how he wants but he doesn't really know how 90% of the game works, or forgets, and it's making everything take 10x as long as it should.

Drew 100% doesn't seem to get camo, either. It changes depending on every situation. Crawling, sitting, standing, darkness, light, water, land. It's not an area specific thing.

Edit: This is a site where one of the most popular pieces of content was a 150 episode long endurance run. Feel free to take your time drew, no one is going to care!

Yeah, the bit where he emptied all his ammo on a guy and went through a whole suppressor trying to go for a kill was pretty dumb. I get that trying to go less than lethal is intuitively harder, but it's usually so much easier. Shoot a guy near his head, but not quite with the M1911 and you'll set off a caution at the very least, and have to keep shooting til you get it right. Shoot a guy literally anywhere from his boot to his brain with the MK22 and you're golden. But he never even has it equipped!

I know it's not a speedrun with MLG pro tactics or whatever bollocks, and I don't want to seem like I'm being overly critical of Drew. It's just that it seems to have become somewhat of a grind for him, when he could make it so much easier on himself just by changing his playstyle slightly.

For what it's worth, Drew is mostly right about styptic. It's generally a clotting agent. My grandfather had a styptic pen that he used to close up cuts if he nicked himself shaving.

Yeah, those are awesome! Electric shavers always irritate my skin and having an alum block really made getting started with wet shaving so much easier.

The great thing about Edge of Tomorrow is that it really works with Tom Cruise's real life persona. He starts out as an unbearable douchebag, and you want to see that smug face take a beating, and another beating, and yet another beating until he stops being so fucking smug. And you do get to see that!

(It is also a very entertaining movie.)

I find it weird how Drew plays these games, definitely the modern COD mentality has infected him as well. Like when MGS2 came out it was so amazing all the ways you could do things and messing around with the physics and A.I etc. With Drew though he ran through everything and gunned everyone down or just became really annoyed by everything like the game was a chore. When I played it back in the day everything Drew saw as a chore, that was the fun of the game, just taking your time and messing around.

Just seems to me Drew wants to get through the game ASAP and is ruining the fun of it.

It's probably worth mentioning to Drew and Dan that you actually get special camo with special passive effects for defeating a boss using non-lethal weaponry. So for example defeating The Fear using non-lethal gives you his camo suit: "Spider – Light and dark yellowish-brown camouflage with dark streaks. Makes the player's camo index always at least 80% while still (70% when running) but drains stamina horribly. Received for a non-lethal victory against The Fear."

The way these videos tend to pan out (especially in MGS3) is that it seems to me that Drew doesn't care as much as he should about these games. If that's because he was pulled into making this series without wanting to discover it on his own or that he just doesn't enjoy it I'm not sure. Me and some friends didn't have anywhere near as much trouble getting into the new mechanics of this game and utilising the old ones. We also didn't forget how various parts worked either but then i suppose you could chalk it up to the space of time between videos. I really like this series but the way the frustration mounts because of (sometimes) silly reasons spoils it.

Therms aren't cheesing it. It's how you beat the boss. I mean some may want to romanticize the whole aspect of outsniping the end crawling around on your belly looking for that scope glint but honestly, it's a game, just use the therms.

They absolutely are. Same as with The Fear fight. Just because they're efficient doesn't mean they're the most fun or interesting way of playing. They're a stupidly overpowered inclusion that directly harms the fun of certain boss fights in MGS3. I'd say it's one of the games very few real flaws.

Out of all the Metal Gear Scanlon eoisodes I've seen which is pretty much all of them, this was the worst one to watch. Drew fumbling around in the jungle for an hour and Dan not helping him AT ALL is the worse. Also some people have already said it but Drew really needs to tranq people. So many times he's just lying there looking at an enemy walk by instead of tranquilizing the guy to get him out of the way.

And the biggest thing he needs to do which is what I did most of my way through is just sneak up on a guy and R1 him to throw him to the ground and stun him. Then once he's down tranq him in the head. I even ran right up to guys shooting me and did it. No need for this grenade shit.

If the alternative is watching Drew fumble around, "die" (by which I mean get sent back to that lab area) and try it ten times before Dan and Jason let him actually cheat by letting The End die of old age, I'll take him using the therms.

@danryckert I have zero problem with you telling Drew game mechanics. Story stuff is what people want you to avoid. My only suggestions are 1) Tell Drew to be on the ground when he changes his camo. 2) Remind him that the d-pad makes him sneak walk and he's more or less silent that way instead of sprinting. D-pad also makes him sneak crawl so if he's prone and at a 90-95% camo index and uses the d-pad he won't make any noise when crawling. 3) motion sensor and mk22 are his friends although the motion sensor will also show animals.

I really wish he had tranq'd Ocelot and got the Animal camo for an area coming up. It gives snake a 95% camo rating as long as he's on the ground.

Drew is... bad at MGS. And that is fine! People are good at different kinds of games. I think everyone would be happier if we just accept that, let him play the damn thing the way he wants and enjoy it for what it is: someone kinda fumbling his way through the MGS series and enjoying the story for the first time.

I beat this game last June on normal. I'm now playing on extreme and these videos remind of HOW MUCH HEALTH YOU GET ON NORMAL. Even still, extreme hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be, It's changeling though.
