Metal Gear Scanlon: 3: Part 09

The Boss is so freaking cool. Good lord. My favorite video game lady, for sure. I feel like screaming from a rooftop when she puts Volgin in his place.

Hard to believe that character came out of Japan.

Drew often can't play in the way he thinks he should. His Fury boss fight was a great demonstration of this. It showed that there is an objectively wrong way to play the game: pressing L1 to look in 1st-person, for instance.

He did good this episode. He pressed all the right buttons.

I remember the last episode they said to look like that guy who looked exactly like Raiden. Why didn't Drew pick up on that and put on the Raiden mask? I never even got this far into the game and saw that one, but maybe I'm missing something and I'm wrong?

I dunno, I'll continue watching.

Gee, it's almost like they're paying customers with criticisms of the content they're paying for, and perhaps a desire to influence in some way this content that's unfolding before their eyes, almost in real time, and prone to audience influence.

I actually stopped watching the playthrough entirely when I realised that I don't enjoy the way Drew plays the game. I might get back to it later...

Fairy disguise huh, classy kojima.

Cool episode, a little bit of everything. I especially enjoyed the movie talk at the start over the successful stealth. Volgin's torture methods are a lot harder to watch than Ocelot's. If MGSV made people freak out, I'm not looking forward to it after this one's torture scene.

I like everyone's characterization. Volgin is an interesting one that I did not expect to be interesting at all. He's a mean, stupid brute, obviously the least intelligent and respected person whenever he's in a room with anyone, but a combination of his abilities and funds make him a commanding figure. He seems to know or care as little about whatever The Boss is planning and Ocelot's feelings as Solidus understood in the last game about his partners and the Patriots, but I like him a lot more because everyone are aware of his incompetence and still frightened in place/obeying him for some as of yet undisclosed plans to happen. People exchange a lot of glances when he's around. I love how when he tortures someone, he is the one giving away all the information.

The soldiers not taking away Snake's radio communication when it's no longer implanted in his ear is silly, but I understand.

Oh god, not this same old comment again. Dan and Drew have already clearly stated that they're going to keep playing this the way they want. So this is not really all that prone to audience influence. Also, I doesn't help that a big chunk of those comments are crazy long walls of text that just end up containing an enraged rant.

Man, Drew is gonna have such a loooooong Sorrow "battle" what with all the dudes he's mowing down!

One thing that I wish Drew had discovered: once you're in the complete Raiden disguise, you can go around the base punching guards and they'll thank you for it. It's hard to stumble on if you don't know about it, though, since there's no reason to go back into an area that has guards, once you have the disguise.

I wonder if @danryckert even knows about this? He didn't bring it up, and it seems like the kind of thing that he would force Drew to do for 10 minutes.

I might be alone in this, but I watched MacGruber having never heard of the character before and thought it was pretty hit and miss (mostly miss). Then after hearing about them, I went back and watched the SNL skits and thought they were WAY funnier.

During chemistry I was told to put a piece of burning magnesium into a small bowl without looking at it. Not only did I fail to put it into the bowl, I did look at it.

For those who don't know, magnesium burns brighter than the sun.

Not sure how much I've learnt about MGS3 from this season of MGScanlon, but I sure have learnt a great deal about MGS fans!

@danryckert They mentioned not attacking The Fury from the front not because it was ineffective - but because it was dangerous due to the range of his flamethrower and it cancelling out all of your attacks.

The Roger Moore movies are the woooooorst. And say what you will about Moonraker, but Live and Let Die is legitimately a pile of shit on a whole other level. Moore does have two or three good ones, but that's it. Connery is mostly good with 2 classics (Goldfinger and From Russia) and Diamonds are Forever, which is...poor. Brosnan is mostly meh with Goldeneye being good and TWiNE being better than its reputation but still average. Dalton has one great, one average (Daylights and License, respectively.) OHMSS is a top 5 Bond film though Lazenby's a goofball--even one of the good Moore movies is basically a knockoff of OHMSS if I recall correctly. Craig has two top 5 contenders and QoS, which is about a middle of the pack film. So Dan, if you disliked QoS, get ready for fully half of the Bond ouvre to be worse!

I have love for all of them, though. I'll watch any of them at the drop of a hat. Except for Live and Let Die, in which case I'd rather listen to the theme song and continue on my merry way.

First few minutes Drew says he doesn't want to just run around shooting, but use the game's mechanics. HAS HE BEEN THERE WHEN HE IS PLAYING THIS SERIES?! Hilarious.

Also: Please fucking tell me they get the mother fucking sneaking suit! I have been trying to remind Dan since the first episode.

As for the Bond movie discussion: Man With The Golden Gun is absolute horseshit! It's because you were a kid Drew. Dalton was in The Living Daylights and License To Kill, and both OWNED. All over most Bond movies are TERRIBLE including some of the Connery ones. From Russia With Love though, KILLER.

For those who haven't seen the nightmare sequence.

I get that the Shagohod is supposed to be able to launch ICBM's from anywhere, but doesn't the fact that the phase 2 model needs to accelerate to 300mph (around cruising speed of a passenger aircraft) to fire them defeat the whole purpose of the "mobile launch platform"?

I mean, if you'll need an airstrip or long highway to launch your nuke, the ATV capabilities are pointless. Even if the engines were extremely powerful, and ignoring the friction from the weird drill treads, considering the weight of the tank it would probably take a decent 2 km of straight road to reach that speed. If they wanted a mobile ICBM the Soviets already had stuff like the SS-16 Sinner missiles that were massive, but could be transported over roads and launched from a mobile platform.

@jehull: I was thinking the same thing. When I played for the first time, I accidentally slit the throats of a small army of scientists when I was trying to grab them for interrogation. It came back to bite me later.

So sad that they blew right past this. ;_; It's a travesty. They almost got the Codec that will tell you about it, but Drew hates using his Codec for anything but getting out of being stuck, despite it being the source of 75% of the funniest shit in this game. Drew would have loved doing that. I'm really, really surprised that Jason didn't jump in.

Cool episode guys. Shame Drew couldn't fool with the Raikov disguise a bit more, but oh well. One of my favourite moments in this game is just running around and hitting guys in the base and then taking pictures as they quiver and take it. It's also a great way to disarm them from their main weapons and also just feel satisfying exploring every inch and getting every item in the base without any repurcussions.

I can't wait for Drew to be absolutely slaughtered by the Sorrow :V

Dan, you are in for a treat with your Bond marathon. I did this exact same thing last year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, I went from being fairly dismissive of Bond movies to being a big, big fan.

In my experience there are two kinds of Bond fans: ones who love Thunderball and hate On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and ones who feel the opposite. I think I know which one you're going to be, but I hope we find out. Sounds like premium podcast material to me.

@ohnooh: Exactly. That's why you need Metal Gear! Legs! Of course, we've already had a codec call with Sigint as to why a Metal Gear is a "technical nightmare".

@straightgrizzly Nope, they don't. He was opening all the lockers, but then he stopped. a row and a half before he would have got it. I wonder if he would have even equipped it mater on though; you don't know what it does until you wear it and look at it in the model viewer.

@redhotchilimist And you don't even actually see any torture in GZ. But it's definitely more disturbing in GZ. Conversely, I always thought that this torture scene was sort of campy; I feel like I've definitely seen at lot worse in movies. Like that Green Mile scene for example.

I think the old Bond movies are kind of indistinguishable from modern parodies of themselves, but there's certainly something to be said about how brazen Bond is in the old movies. Sean Connery tends to just wander right into the villain's compound and let them capture him so he can counter-interrogate them over dinner and bed their mistresses. Connery was a gentleman spy in a whole other class than the rest of the Bonds.

I hope @danryckert tells Drew to go back to the locker where you stashed Raikov when you return to Groznyj Grad before you blow up the Shagohad so he can get the Sneaking Suit. It's great camo/armor for basically the rest of the game/the boss fights, besides most of the EVA escort section, but you should equip that towards the end of the second section of that anyway to have it on for the rest of the game, as it is good in the final battle.

Also! This would be a very, very good time to have Drew get out of the cell the traditional way: use the fake death pill that The Boss shot you with. As I assume Dan does know, it is very important to understand how that mechanic works at this point in the game.

Fun fact: you can also get out of the cell by puking.

@dberg: I would argue that the best of the classic Bond movies distinguish themselves as being a cut above the parodies (From Russia With Love is basically on par with a great Hitchcock thriller) but yeah, the bad classic Bond movies are basically self-parody.

I always say the greatest Bond parody of all time is still Diamonds are Forever. Hell, Bond does the same thing in that movie as Drew did in this episode: wander around a secret facility disguised as a goofy scientist. Watching Connery wander around a secret laboratory introducing himself as "Klaus Hergescheimer from G Section, just checking radiation shields!" will always be funny to me.

There is a hidden r1 first person view when Ocelot leaves the torture room, I love this one.

I found The End easier than the Fury myself. I think the frontal assault bit was more the Fury's very effective flame thrower.

That shotgun rocks, carried me till I got better.

I remember 8 tracks. 8 tracks included Steely Dan (Countdown to ecstasy), Pink Floyd (Relics), and the soundtrack of Easy Rider.

Best episode yet! I can't remember if this is near the end or if there's a long backtracking sequence. I feel like there's some backtracking.
