Metal Gear Scanlon: Part 11

Well, I'm convinced Metal Gear Solid was written for children, which would explain why I loved it. Also getting the bad ending made it stick out even more. That shit was real raw.

And Drew, you're a magnificent bastard. Lookin forward to the next game.

Wow, this was great! Never really played much MGS but Lookin' forward to the rest of the series.

I think the only context in which I'd consider the writing in this game "deep" is perhaps from a 10 year old boy's perspective. The variety of game mechanics are novel and the music was very good, but the melodrama, predictable story tropes, and cheesy dialogue without a hint of irony seemed to vary between dull to eyerollingly embarrassing to listen to.

It was actually fun seeing someone else play the game nowadays, since I did the same in 2011 (and then the others with the Legacy Collection). The game's good, and it's easy to understand why it was such a phenomenon back then.

Anyway, I actually got the Otacon ending on my first playthrough, since I misunderstood what Ocelot was saying at the torture scene. And I have to say that I prefer that ending, it just seems better, since I never liked the forced romance between Snake and Meryl in the "true ending". That and the fact that the scene with Otacon and Snake on the snowmobile is a killer for me.

Oh jeez. I'm watching these for the first time, a couple of years late. I'm 50 minutes in and I just saw how long the video is. I'm guessing Drew needed a few more tries on this boss fight. (Or there's some real long-ass cut-scenes to come. Though Dan's 90 minute estimate makes that seem unlikely to be the sole reason.)

Didn't love Metal Gear Solid, but definitely loved Metal Gear Scanlon.

It's crazy that this ended five years ago today. Time flies so fast!
