I'm going to advise that Drew never picks the option with the red arrow in the Combat Deployment tutorial for some reason. He also picks a lower ranked team, which there is no reason to ever do. Just send you best guys all the time for the best results.

@archnite: There totally is a reason to do that, because you can loose dudes on deployments. Now later on in the game when you are swimming in S recruits and/or maxing your pop cap anyway it's not an issue, but if you are still staffing up, sending out the D rank team instead of a B rank team means if anyone gets killed you are impacted less. So I also frequently sent out lower ranked squads as long as their success rate was still maxed. If a D squad still has a 95% chance to make it why not.

Not sure if I like Dan doing some of the easy mundane stuff for Drew like calling in Heli's and ordering supply drops. I can foresee it being episode 10 and Drew doesn't really remember how to call in a supply drop on his own.

But hopefully I'm wrong.

Exactly - there is a very compelling reason to send your lower ranked squads out on deployments. They rank up and get medals when they're out there. If you are constantly sending out only your best teams on deployments, you're not giving any of your other troops a chance to get any experience or medals.

I always sent out the lowest rank teams that had a 95% chance of success first. Worked out quite well.

@mike: Do the medals actually bring the lower soldiers to a higher rank? I never really looked into the medal stuff, and just assumed it didn't do anything.

Depends on the rank they are at. A D soldier will have no problem making it to C via medals, but an S rank won't get to S+ as the requirements are far higher.

You really need to deal with the fighting among staff. Firing troublemakers helps. And lots of cash/gmp.

Also...Night ops! D:

pro-tip: the smoke grenades (which you have research access to right now) are basically poor man's sleep grenades for the first part of the game. they temporarily stun mans, giving you enough time to run up and CQC them, and providing nice cover to boot

Anyone know if the soldiers in the combat unit will lose their medal/skill boost over time or are they permanent? My strategy has been deploying soldiers until they get the medal then swap them to other teams levels like R&D or Intel.

man, if Dan tried any of the Extreme/Total Stealth missions, he'd hate the Riot SMG. that gun makes guys go down loudly, so everyone nearby a downed dude will immediately jump to YO WE'RE GETTING ATTACKED rather than "hey uh you need to wake up hey CP what do we do"

but Dan's also right in that it's super sexy in Reflex mode. man.

three men sent to the brig

three men released from the brig

fighting has broken out among staff

So always the same three guys I guess? Still funny though.

and @drewbert see THIS is why you deploy at night see how easier that was??? Made for great viewing too!

I can't for the riot suits and directional mines to come out. It's going to an interesting challenge, especially since no one has really pointed out how many equipment destroying dispatch missions Drew is starting to build up.

I wonder how differently Drew would've played this game even if he didn't have to play it for Metal Gear Scanlon. Like if he would've used the slam all the time or used the riot SMG. That riot SMG does seem super useful though. Probably should've used it more on my playthrough.

I like to call this Metroid Prime Syndrome cause I remember when my brother was playing Metroid Prime for the first time, I had already beaten it and basically told him where to go every step of the way. As a result, he literally didn't know where anything was and couldn't play the game without me cause he'd be lost all the time. Best way to learn is to experience it for yourself.

I also feel like that's part of the reason why Drew forgets a lot of the time basic mechanics and the overall base management part of the game because he just asks Dan what to do every single time any decision comes up.

@probablytuna: Medals are permanent, morale is permanent as long as you don't go into the red or have fights. Morale is gained by both BB visiting and just over time (again, as long as your GMP is in the black).

You can also get multiple medals on one person in certain instances, although the requirements are specific for each medal, meaning you can't earn the others by just sending them on dispatch missions.

Can you guys please stop talking about random shit?

I mean, I get it, it's fun and all. But you play this ~100 hour game for 2 hours a week. So you talking about tasering yourself while Drew runs around in a circle is painful to watch.

Not that it really matters, since Drew already ignores +80% of the games content (in side ops and tapes).

Dan I worry about the idea of you operating any kind of motorized vehicle, let alone one capable of destroying buildings.

Also oh my god electricity going in to your body is VERY VERY BAD and can KILL you. For fuck sake dan what is wrong with you.

@raszagal: Listening to Dan and Drew talk about movies and other random shit is half the fun of this series. If you just wanna see a longplay of the game with no commentary, there is plenty of that stuff on YouTube. The taser story was really funny.

@mirado: I think it also does an Animal Crossing thing where the morale goes down if you don't play the game for a while. I haven't played it for a week and got a nice cutscene of guys getting into a fight on mother base.

Loading Video...

I hope this is not too spoilery since it's just a random trigger thing and not part of the story in any way.

@doctorkohaku: Damnit, what a great cutscene. It probably had more Kiefer lines than any other cutscene in the game. Sucks you can miss it.

I never understood Dan's preference for the Riot SMG until now. Seems like Dan triggered Reflex Mode a lot while surrounded by multiple enemies...taking advantage of the SMG's high firing rate in slow-motion. Dan played MGSV like a non-lethal Max Payne.

@doctorkohaku: There's actually a totally separate cutscene for staying away too long, but if morale is lowered over time, I guess you could also see that one as well. The people that have posted that normally have had their GMP in the red.

From what I've seen, just having positive GMP raises morale overtime, so I've never encountered that cutscene in game, even after taking a long break. It's a shame that's one of the best ones, as you can miss it completely.

Riot SMG can go do one.

EDIT: I wish Drew would remember interrogation exists. And crouch. It's broad daylight, at the very least try not to stand up and walk around in a black suit.

@raszagal: Don't think this series is for you dude. I personally only watch around 10 mins of the MGSV videos now (bosses and plot) as they have become really boring to watch.

It became obvious this one wasn't for me when drew started sighing at the prospect of listening to the tapes.
