I feel stupid for examining all the soldiers who were infected at the time, and not seeing what it was that they all had in common. I lost about 100-200 people.

Edit: "They all speak Kikongo." Okay Drew, I take back anything negative I ever said about your play-style. You're the best Metal Gear player ever.

My dad's mother was from the Ukraine, and his dad was from Russia. So I've been exposed to some Russian culture in my youth. So I'd pick Russian as a language I would learn, aside from French which is Canada's second language.

I actually let myself be spoiled about issues like that, so I can cut the BS.

@kasaioni: I just about started yelling at my TV when I figured it out. It felt really cool. I'd kind of ignored most of the staff management stuff except for auto-assigning all periodically. And then all of a sudden not only does this stuff matter, it's used in a way I never expected to move the plot forward. This game has a lot of problems, but that AH HA moment was one of my favorite bits of my whole first playthrough.

I powered through the story at this point. I had hundreds of guys and was not going to go through that list after I figured it out.

Unsurprisingly, they continue the trend of totally misunderstanding how Quiet works.

Man, I ignored the fuck out of this little part of the game. I had guys dying left and right and was way too lazy to even make an attempt at figuring it out. I assumed that if I didn't dilly dally with the main story missions that it would sort itself out. I was right.

I haven't watched the episode yet, but I'm kicking myself over not figuring out the starting assault rifle is totally an FN FNC

If he's worried about new recruits getting sick, there's a way in the menu to "order by recruit date" or something like that, and then you can just go through the recently added people and quarantine 'em.

Drew got kind of lucky. All the people he was looking at had English in common too, but he didn't notice it. In fact it was the same for me, and I thought English was the key due to the doctors' info about the Devil's House (of course, it becomes important later).

All that said, the UI for managing staff in this game sucks (which is profoundly bad given that the main thing you're actually doing in this game is procuring staff). It was way easier to just quarantine everybody (on PC at least, I could hold down the "mark" button and just scroll through the "all staff" list to select everyone very quickly) than to go through hundreds of guys and looking at conditions.

So I just did that immediately and then once I had a theory about what the issue was, it turned out I didn't really feel like unquarantining people selectively and just left it at that.

It's almost a shame that Drew figured it out so quickly. The whole sequence is more memorable if you start bleeding manpower before you work it out. Kudos to Drew, though.

I'm surprised a lot of people had trouble figuring out the pattern? For me it was also almost instantaneous. The only problem was going through and dismissing sooo many of my 'dogs'.

Yeah...I made the same mistake. Man, it took forever quarantining all those guys, just to undo it later. It sucked!

I actually disagree that the UI is bad, I think it's pretty well done actually. It's just for this particular case that you can't just sort by language, but I think that was left out on purpose. I think Kojima probably wanted people to search through their entire list of employees.

But I also think it would just be faster to play through the main missions as fast as possible any ways, as the cure presents itself not long after.

@sparkletone I actually really like that they tied the staff management into the story a bit here. It's a great idea.

I wish i would have done the same. Around 700 of my 1.2 k soldiers spoke kikongo and by the end of the whole quarantining process i was going insane by the sheer amount of soldier's info pages i checked

I was lucky to have figured out the infection thing as soon as it was presented, since they pretty much spoil it in one of the trailers leading up to the game's release. I wish I could just say I were smart, but nope. Just a sucker for pre-release material.

Ugh every time I watch this I need to go back and play after more missions...damn this game is fun.

Didn't quarantine a single person. Worked out fine.

Can we start a petition to have drew use the tranq gun? I think he'll be much happier with it.

Like drew it didn't take me long to realize that kikongo was what they all had in common. The part that sucked the most was quarantining all of the dudes, i had the same reaction that drew did because I had close to 1000 people I had to go through

Edit: a snipe is an actual animal, it's a species of bird and is the origin of the word sniper

The problem with D-Dog is that when I am prone and sniping he constantly walks in directly in front of my scope. D-Dog is easily the best companion though and once you get used to him the game is almost unplayable without him.

@ppompnmn: He totally circumvents the idea of carefully scoping out a base to any degree before charging in. With D-dog, you don't need to send anyone to scout either. Just head on in and you will know where everybody is. And once you've taken everyone out, he then marks every vehicle and weapon emplacement in the area.

You can also equip him with the ability to fulton dudes on your command later on, and the guards don't care about the dog.

I thought about doing all that stuff and decided to just beeline the next couple of story missions until it resolved itself. I mean I didn't know it would, but I took a gamble and thought at the worst I can just get more guys. The idea of sifting through my over a thousand soldiers sounded like a huge waste of time.

I had to sift through 2100 guys to find every infected person.

I cannot believe that Drew got the infection cause immediately. I spent hours trying to figure it out by investigating the soliders' physically at motherbase before looking up a guide.

Same. I tried and gave up. Drew's a bright guy.

It took me like 20 minutes to go throught that menu and find everyone with the infection cause. A good idea in concept, but if you have to many people it becomes incredibly tedious and annoying.

I quarantined a bunch, but was operating under the false assumption that it was soldiers who spoke like 6 or 7 languages (if you let it go and don't check the quarantine right now, those are the guys who seem to get quarantined quicker). Didn't work out for me!

I didn't bother with the quarantines and just continued the story, sure I've lost a bunch of dudes but I could always Fulton some more after. Way faster too.

It's okay because he missed one. The idea of the infection was kinda cool but the execution was just unwanted busywork to me. Maybe a mission to wander around identifying and "quarantining" infected troops would've worked better than 5-10 minutes of scrolling through a list.

Snipe hunting is done in the rural south as well. I always thought it was a little mean. I mean how long do the adults stay away before they come back to get you? I suppose it is a good way to make your kid question though which is necessary. Can't really trust anyone ever. This disease part does look poorly executed which is a shame. The question now is why does it matter that they all speak the same language for disease progression ... I mean from what I know about biology that is not how things work...and you should read dune and yes the sneaking suit looks like the stillsuit from the movies (not as described in the books as it doesn't cover the face) the movies stink not worth watching. The book however is a classic. Have you read past 1 drew...they get odd after the first one..

If he speaks Kikongo, send him back to Congo.

edit: Holy shit Drew was fast figuring it out! I thought I was fast, but I had to listen to a few tapes to get some hints.

You can actually go offline from the options menu.
I really hope they remember to go offline for the next episode.

Damn, Drew really did figure that out quickly. He's a bit of a puzzzle master. Dan's silent acknowledgement was brilliant. I really wanted to see Drew stress over losing men for the next few missions.

Personally, I didn't bother and just got on with the missions until it was figured out. I don't know what doing it Drew's way changes in terms of which cutscenes we see?

I'm maybe a 100 or so hours into learning Japanese. Pretty difficult but actually really fun to figure out. I see enough of it that it's worth the time.

The quarantine section was a good opportunity for tapes...just sayin.

Yeah I listened to a bunch going through the tedium of quarantining dudes. The problem with doing that during this feature is it requires Dan to stop talking and I'm not sure he's actually physically capable of that.
