I love how they've casually referenced Star Spangled Beasters a handful of times recently. I still think that was a cool idea for a series, even if the timing for it was bad (and it was).

This game is like someone hacked into Dan's brain and ported it to the original Xbox.

So I was really worried. I used to really wish I could play this game, but ever since this rerelease was announced I've felt like Devolver's super meme-y approach to promoting it has been really cringey. And that's made me wonder if this game's charm and humor wouldn't hold up and if in 2019 (especially with current events being what they are) I would no longer find this game entertaining.

I'm glad to say that this Quick Look put those fears to rest. This looks fucking incredible.

Made me pine for a simpler time before they put politics in video games.

@visualizer: If by clairvoyant you mean they make games about things that have already happened then sure?

All of the wrestling, music, sports, and pretty much all other pop culture references go completely over my head, so I am extremely excited whenever I hear an On Cinema reference.

I appreciate Dan taking the responsibility of showing Metal Wolf Chaos in a quick look to remember for this year. It is almost as good as the Let's Sing 2019 Quick Look.

As someone who has watched someone else play the game like 30 times over the past 12 or so years, and has finally gotten to play it for himself now, for anyone new to this glorious experience, here's some tips:

1: Shipping containers, those temp half-cylinder building things, and sometimes vehicles, can have ammo, health, or sometimes even secret weapons inside them. The weapons are usually in special smaller crates, I think, but are stuffed in with a bunch of others. Dan ran super low on ammo at the end there, while I've never really even come close to it because I destroy all the things.

2: The circle bar filling up at the top right is your Special Attack (Ultimate / Burst / Whatever). Dunno on a controller, but if you hit F on keyboard you pull out every single weapon you have equipped, yell out "How do you like me now?!" and fire them all for about 5 seconds. It's glorious damage and all-around real dumb and good.

3: The vertical bar is your energy for boosting or charging weapons that use it. Boosting can also overheat and start draining shields. Shields are the horizontal bar, and when that goes you can lose your health pips.

4: Jump up and use the ground slam attack. I use that almost as much as my weapons. It's fantastic. You can take out most lighter vehicles and scenery with a well placed stomp. It also saves on ammo!

5: If you jump and tap the boost repeatedly you can go a bit further before running low on energy. If you stand still and hold boost, you'll go straight up, and can then tap forward to boost over higher walls and stuff.

6: The statue in the first mission is Michael's father, who I think appears in a Ninja Gaiden game? Anyway, shoot the statue. A lot. Keep doing it. Seriously don't stop. Then use the stationary vertical boost to get up there.

7: Prisoners are what raise your Economy / Science score, which I think let you research better weapons and get more money/metal? Musicians unlock music. Don't stomp on the cages. I forgot that last bit once. Also sometimes they drop stuff for you.

8: You can replay any mission to grind for money/metal, or to find prisoners and stuff you missed. You need money to research weapons, and both money and metal to build them.

9: Health... pods? will upgrade your mech whenever you get a certain amount of them. I think it happens automatically?

10: The scores at the end are... difficult if you just do the mission. Some of them require farming the infantry spawners to get good scores on. I'd ignore them the first run.

11: The most important tip of all, however, is this: No matter what, BELIEVE IN YOUR JUSTICE!

Politics in video games???

Most of the voice actors in this game also appear in Shenmue I or II (i.e. Ryan Drees played both President Michael Wilson and Tom the hot dog stand guy). Jeremy Blaustein talked a while back about the reason why the voice acting was so bad in Shenmue, and said it was mainly because Yu Suzuki insisted the english dialogue be recorded in Japan. There simply weren't enough decent voice actors for the job.

Since this game was Japan-only it looks like the same thing happened. If you were a native English speaking actor in Japan at the time who sounded at least fairly professional, you got the job in both games. Even if you probably couldn't cut it as an actor in the US.

I'm delighted that Abby has now twice bitterly referenced the patriotic feature that shall not be named and its ignoble fate.

I hope they can reboot and/or finish it at some point.

Leading directly into Killer 7.

I played this back in 2006 on a friend's modded Xbox, and I could not BELIEVE this never came out in the US. It could have been played straight. It could have been played satirically. The tone is so all over the place, but it's so GLORIOUSLY STUPID.

And all they needed to translate were the damn menus and text! I know it's not NOTHING, but all the dialog is already perfect!

Dan keeps saying "lost in translation" but this game's vocal performances were all in english to begin with and it was perfect so they didn't change it

I will fund Dan Rykert's next great American novel - the literary sequel to this game.

...but only if Dan opens the novel with Alex's line, "In the year 20-Fucking-Whenever".

I hope the PC port is solid.

Can't wait to play this mashup of Armored Core and Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. I was worried about the political stuff in this game, but I think it's sci-fi enough it won't bug me.

Watching a FromSoft Mech game is really making me long for Chromehounds. That game was dope as hell and way ahead of its time.

Games like this is why Quick Looks and Giant Bomb was invented.

I actually found an old Air Force One cup from when I saw it in theaters going through some old boxes. I put it on my desk to hold pens. I had stoic President Harrison Ford and crazy terrorist Gary Oldman looking at me as I watched this.

from what little i've played of the armored core series, this def looks an offshoot of armored core (right down to needing to ask "are 3 songs playing at once right now or is this just part of the song?".

They really need to do a full play-through of this. The sheer amount of scenery-chewing in the later game needs to be experienced.
