Reviews: Metroid: Other M Video Review

Been waiting for the Metroid video review, mainly for Brad's hand movements.

[edit2] I have to admit I don't share the fond memorys of the game a lot of people seem to have. I am old enough to know the Metroid game on the SNES (I never owned a NES) but I never played a game of the series. Still, from that perspective the game looks like a high quality Wii-game and god knows there are not many of those out there.
 
I hope for the developer the game turns out a success.

I'm waiting to finish Metroid Prime 3 before tackling this one. Or maybe I should replay Super Metroid and Fusion, to refresh a bit my knowledge of classic Metroid... Mmmm.

Excellent review, Brad (Shoebomber?). It's games like this that remind me to get my hands on a Wii sometime soon.

Only ever played Echoes, and that was alright. The 'showing you stuff but not letting you interact with it' style gameplay really annoyed the hell out of me though. 

So used to Samus being more Caucasian so thumbs down for that but otherwise this looks ALWITE.

See now THIS is what a review should be about, talking about the actual game. NOT ranting about how the character has been changed so drastically. >_>

Divorced from the prime games, this isn't a bad game...though trying to work out when you can jump on an enemy is annoying me currently. However I really miss the scanning parts from Prime and the overall heft that game's movement had...oh and the script for other M is just awful. Otherwise I totally agree with Brad's assessment, which doesn't happen often.

Doesn't look that bad, but it doesn't look as polished as something like Super Mario Galaxy.

Bleh - I might pick this up, but this game is still nowhere near as exciting as it could have been for them to one-up Shadow Complex with a new 2D Metroidvania game.   Castlevania: HD, I'm also looking at you in this regard, although you failed far more miserably in crapping all over SotN.
 
The 2D/3D hybrid just seems weird, even if you get used to it, and I hate that they're going all-in with their attempts to have side characters and interaction after recent Metroid games have been worse and worse on this.  It's kind of the point to have solitary Samus taking on an entire planet with little guidance and no assistance.
 
Finally, Nintendo hasn't introduced real voicework for Mario or Link yet, and after this I can see why.  Nothing worse than having a childhood built-up, kick-ass hero sound dull and lifeless once you hear her speak.

Good ending as always. Glad that this Metroid turned out to be good and not half baked. However, that story line still needs work.

The Prime games were good, however they're not true Metroid games. It's been since 04 I think since the last one... come on Nintendo!

The combat just seems too automatic. What's the point?

All the narrative stuff I've seen of this game makes me want to bury all the copies in some landfill.

The title of this game just looks like a translation error.

Didn't plan on getting Other M but all the recent stuff I've seen of it has got me interested again.

So can't understand the purpose of the lava & other holographic levels hurting you, seems that you can go into the program menus to turn the lava hurting you off leaving it to just traversal. Seems it still would have been damn easier for Team Ninja to just skip the ship idea & go with a small moon full of biospheres of different environments & leave the lava for below the surface.

I like that they tried something different with Metroid again. I never got into the Prime games, but I like that they don't just churn out tons of traditional Metroid games. It helps keep me from getting burned out on the main series. I don't give a flying fuck about new Zelda games anymore, because there are so damn many of them and for the most part they're the same thing over and over again. It'd be nice if I could retain some measure of appreciation for one of Nintendo's big franchises, and Metroid not being something that gets pumped out constantly helps. Granted, I didn't like Metroid or Metroid 2, and only got into the series because Super Metroid was actually decent.

Metroid Prime is just as good as Super Metroid, if not better. It's about as faithful a 3D Metroid could possibly be to the Super Metroid experience. 2D is fun and all, but by definition, it will always be inferior to a 3D experience. "
