During the Grandia 3 part, they gave the same name to two different people. I wanted to see where the guy with the magnificent mane is now, but keep getting results for the mustache guy.

That hair is more wondrous and memorable than Grandia III ever was, unfortunately. Or maybe fortunately.

@intelix: Was about to say the same, these are always fun little time capsules of that time in games.

And I'm old.

It’s crazy to me how many details Jeff and Brad can remember about games they don’t even have a ton of affinity for, like Jeff knowing Midway published the first Shadow Hearts, and Brad remembering the wartime setting of the series.

And to Ben, yes, the Shadow Hearts games do rule, they are one of my favorite JRPG franchises. Mariachi with a gun is par for the course in terms of party members. Other notable folks include vampire wrestler and perverted dollmaker. The wrestler (Joachim if I remember correctly) is fun in that he upgrades his weapon by just finding stuff in the environment, I think in the the second game his ultimate weapon is a model submarine that you just steal from a museum.

As a massive Grandia 1 & 2 fan, I remember being very quickly disappointed by Grandia 3. Maybe I should give it another shot.

What character was it that Jan reacted to, I assumed it was from this Demo Derby, when they mention it, in that other video?

It's an okay game, overall. I remember it not clicking with me off the bat either, mainly because it felt like more of a slice of life type of story. A lot of talk of dreams (like becoming a pilot!) and not a lot of actual story. But the Grandia battle system is so good that I ended up overlooking all that (just like Grandia Xtreme, which is basically just a dungeon crawler with zero plot, but I played the heck out of it) . It's actually on the shorter side, too, in comparison to 1 & 2, I think I finished 3 in like 25-30 hours, even despite it being a 2-disc game.

Man I can definitely tell the PS2/Gamecube era was definitely the formative years of gaming for me, I'm very acquainted with most of the games on this demo disc.

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams was good, it was more Onimusha, but still fun. If I recall correctly, this was the first mainline game (crazy that it took them 4 games) without fixed camera angles. And Onimusha: Blade Warriors was the platform fighter spinoff Jeff was thinking of. It's funny how many Smash Bros-esque spinoffs like that there were, a la Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble.

Drakengard 3 is in fact very bad and weird, it might have the most unlikeable main character in a game since the dude from Tales of the Abyss. She is just horny and angry and grating and the game plays pretty poorly. The first two games I have an affinity for, though.

Agree about Jeff's thoughts on the State of Emergency games, I loved playing the first game's arcade mode (story mode was boring), and the second game coming out at all was just bizarre.

Man, fucking Shadow the Hedgehog is so bizarre. It's like the weird epitome of 2000s edginess. Like why does he have a human uzi gun?!? It's not even a cartoony gun. The game does have different endings/branches like Ben said; the one interesting thing about the game is how that's implemented, it's basically based off your actions in-game, mainly which enemies you are killing.

Okay, done rambling now!!!

This is by far the worst Shadow Hearts game. Love the first two though, minus the gay stereotypes.

It must be a SF thing because Subway foot long subs are between 5 and 7 bucks here in Tampa. I got a 12" meatball marinara not long ago for $5.50.

His name's Wataru Higuchi, who was a producer at Enix and Square-Enix. He now seems to work at Bandai and is in the credits for a few Dragon Ball games.

He's in the Special Thanks on this disc. Was hard to find much on him in English, but tracking down his name in kanji let me find some stuff like this press conference for Grandia 3.

Based on the demo, Shadow Hearts is a game about a teenage smartass who ignores the advice of his bodyguard and wanders New York City by himself until a stranger tells him to go inside an abandoned building where gets assaulted by two hobos, for some reason thinks he can use magic against them, gets knocked unconscious, and is never heard from again.

I haven't played basketball since I was in high school, but the main thing I've learned since then is that you don't let anyone dunk on you.

EDIT: Is Jeff going "Look at that beautiful man!" the "LOOKIT THAT CORRRRRRRRN! MAAAAAAAAN" of 2020? It's close enough.

Drakengard 3 is bad in a way that's kind of similar to how Drakengard 1 is bad. I respect it. It's not good.

Drakengard 2 is terrible. The gameplay is an improvement over 1, but 1 was trash and slightly better trash is still trash, and the story and characters didn't have any of the intoxicating draw that Drakengard 1 did. Edit: In deference to 'auteur theory', I should mention that this is the one with the least involvement from Yoko Taro.

Drakengard 1 is hot trash with few if any redeeming qualities. It's my favorite game on the PS2.

No one should play any of them.

Shadow Hearts: From the New World gets really fun, eventually, although Covenant was the high point of the series in my opinion.
