Unfinished: Prodeus (12/10/2020)

This looks like it could be one of the most successful blends of old-school and new FPS that I've ever seen? It's doing something to activate my nostalgia centre. Looks incredible, going on the watchlist.

For a second I thought this was a video about Proteus, the amazing walking sim game from quite a while ago, and got VERY confused by the screenshot.

@yabbering_yeti: Yes! I feel the same way and I was trying to pinpoint what it was because I couldn’t articulate it. I think the frame rate of the game is high, but the frame rate of the sprites is lower. So the object that draws your attention triggers that nostalgia while the game around it still feels modern. It’s a really neat trick.

Looks cool. But Ben saying it's 10x more fun than Doom Eternal did it a disservice because my expectations were unreasonably high. I do like the SMW world map, though.

Something about the look makes me think of Valfaris, which was also "an old game that's way more modern" sort of design. And ruled.

anyone in the comments, how this compare to like Dusk?

I mean it ain't GOTY 2020 Doom Eternal but it seems pretty good.

I have been playing this for a while now....i really wanna say its my game of 2020...
It just feels so insanely good to play.

Also.. the mapmaking community for this game is just insane....i love playing the campaigns people have made

Been waiting for this game for a while but I'll hold off till its fully complete. Still looks incredible and mixing crisp(or dirty depending on the object) 2d elements, partical effects and lighting give everything the kind of detail that gets lost when turned into a 3d model.

@robubie: I liked Dusk quite a lot but Prodeus is so much better in nearly every way. Unless you don't want new fangled rendering style tech in your old school style FPS, nearly everything about the game is old school but with new modern twists and the whole package is just awesome. Now honestly, the SP right now (dunno if MP is gonna be involved at all) is fairly short but it did just come out in EA after all. As other people have mentioned though, the community maps and even campaigns are pretty good (some are even quite impressive actually.)

Also for what it's worth - Prodeus' guns feel and sound so much better than Dusk or any of the old school retro FPS games really. I mean some of those games are great fun mind you so don't think I'm just bashing them or anything. Also the music kicks ASS :D

This seems like the best boomer shooter I’ve ever seen Jeff or Brad Quick Look in the past 5 years. In the sense that I’m actually considering buying it, whereas all of the other ones just elicited a “oh, that’s a fun curiosity for someone who is not me.”

I have to say a lot of this looks real cool but you never once would see Press [E] everytime you approach something in any game like pre 2010. I wanna try this but I'm 20 hours into cyberpunk and still haven't even made it 10 percent into the game. I dont think anything will ever be the same after playing that game. I owe it to myself to try being one of the biggest old school fps fans out there. Dusk was a huge disappointment and Wrath even moreso.

This looks like my jam. Looks super crunchy. I love late 90's explosive, unrealistic blood & gore - the kind that just makes me laugh instead of making me feel ill. Looks completely unoriginal for the most part, but it looks like it delivers on what it promises. I love the world map idea - I mean, the structure of Doom-like games is pretty similar to Mario-like games in some ways, so why not?

Unfortunately, the movement in fast-paced FPS's make me dizzy for some reason as I've gotten older so I probably shouldn't play this.

Ranking of Boomer Shooters:

1. Overload

2. Amid Evil

3. Prodeus (might go higher with full campaign)

4. Ion Fury

5. Dusk

are all worth playing

Wrath Aeon of Ruin is OK if you want more

all of these are better than any Serious Sam or Painkiller

but Descent 2, Doom 2, Doom Sigil, Doom 64, Marathon 2: Durandal, Marathon: Infinity, Dark Forces 1&2, Hexen 1&2, Duke Nukem 3D, and Blood are all still better than any of them

@orborborb: I won't die on a hill over Serious Sam, but the original (first) Painkiller was one of the most engrossing shooters I ever played.

Of your list, I've only played Dusk. But I have Amid Evil and Ion Fury lined up. I will check out Overload.
