Get scared: the game!

Honestly, the gameplay loop in this seems excruciating. Watching Brad get stuck in corners was straight making me anxious - a lot of the time it just seemed like he had no way out of situations.

That implies they didn't put a lot of hard work and money into this game.

Now, the game may have ended up being mediocre, but shovelware? Hardly. And what movie is it tied in with? Alien? That movie came out like 30 years ago.

In space, no one can hear the sounds of Brad and Dan screaming.

Seems a divisive game for many, but goodness the aesthetic is perfect. It's like being in the film, and when the tension works it really seems atmospheric. Certainly got it in this video.

Not only is Tom Skerritt alive, he's very well at 81 years old!... Going strong and still acting (and voice acted in this game.) He's also a film instructor in Seattle. Tom Skerritt. Helluva guy!

Probably not, but it being a bit too long for what kind of a game it is seems like a pretty common complaint. This QL will probably make me pick this game up, so I hope I like the length!

This game is certainly not shovelware. In fact it is one of the best horror games that I have played.

Though the game is pretty frustrating at times. Playing this on hard difficulty and that alien can move very quickly when it wants to.

Can I recommend that the Dan Ryckert page start cataloging what he considers things for "cool kids" and those for "dorks". I really love his insistence on these self-declared categories that ensures his personal preferences falls clearly on one side of the divide. :P

Just a heads up but that tracker beep absolutely counts as a sounds. There are even loading screen tool tips that say to be careful using it when you're really close to enemies. Also I find it kinda funny that Brad is surprised that the android can see 3 feet in from of him through glass.

I really feel like this quicklook is exaggerating the "issues" this game has. There's a lot of situations where they've just made a ton of noise or where they just walked right infront of someone, and yet they're surprised at being detected.

Brad's also getting stuck in corners quite a lot, which a swing of your trusty wrench, or a well-placed shot of your gun, or ANY of those items he's been stacking up and not using, would easily remedy.

Not to say they aren't right with some of their criticism, it's dumb as hell that you can't climb a 1 foot incline, and this game does a horrible job of explaining it's mechanics, which leads to a lot of confusion before you actually figure them out. For instance, the tracker makes sound while you've got it raised, sound that enemies can hear. For a good while there, I believed the Alien was just broken after having detected me multiple times for no reason while I was hiding in lockers. Turns out you need to lean back while he's searching, that way you hold your breath which is what he detects you by when he can't see or hear you move. The Alien also makes a ton of noise while it's moving through the vents, but sometimes it hangs around above one, and it's saliva drips in long strings onto the floor. Knowing that I had to actually look out for that mix of silence and bodily fluids removed any feeling I had that the alien was somehow omnipresent. You learn to figure it out to a degree, but it remains lethal because it is so unpredictable.

The Alien feels alive, and it's a shame they didn't do a better job of explaining it's mechanics, because a lot of folks do run into it and experience nothing but frustration for a good while until they learn by trial and error. Or maybe they even just lower the difficulty setting and rely on luck, which is even more of a shame.

As for the technical issues, boy, there seems to be a lot of 'em on the consoles. I've been playing the PC version, and I've yet to run into a single bug in the 7 hours I've put into the game so far. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I get the impression it's a much more stable, and considerably prettier version.

@jensonb: It's just low ceilings, kind of a hallmark of the series if you go back to watching the movies. It feels claustrophobic as all hell.

EDIT: Enemies don't spawn in.. They're all in the area already and they come when the others call for them. Humans do it via shouting, Androids issue you warnings.

Oh goddamnit how I hate when games force manual saving on you. Add tension in the game and not by using a save system that risks me losing 30 minutes of progress. At least give me the option.

A lot of the time it just seems like the robots come out of nowhere, like when the first time he died from the second robot. That's not Brad, that just seems like bad game design to me.

Also those 15fps cutscenes. Developers need to realize that fps is more important than people put on. I'd rather have 60fps than mediocre sweat particles on skin.

Edit: Wow, more situation in which Brad is in a tight area and another robot spawns in. Like it's just so obvious and cheap.

Maaaaaaaaaan That One Thing That Happened At A Certain Time In The Video was freaking terrifying. I can see it have a lot of wait-until-safe moments and it getting on the players nerves but wow that was effective even for just watching a video of a game. This and PT is the stuff that works on my mind.

The androids looked like they spawned on each other (ish) poorly, source of massive irritation.

If you do rewind, you'll also hear that he actually knew what it meant. It's just a Dan thing of asking about anything that comes to mind, even when he knows it but can't recall right there and then.

@do_the_manta_ray: It didn't seem like Brad was really blaming anyone but himself for being detected by the androids there, so it's not like he blames the game for that or is surprised. I do see how it can get pretty frustrating that there's no jump button or anything similar to get out of certain situations, but that's probably not a huge issue.

Anyways, I think this QL showed off the game pretty well for someone who haven't played it. It was obvious that they hadn't picked up on all the mechanics yet, but it's still pretty early in the game. The stuff with the alien was tense as hell.

What worries me the most about getting this game right now is the save system.

@amyggen: I believe the words "This is bullshit" was uttered several times after they made a ruckus and were detected due to it.

You might be right about this being representative of people who don't understand how to play it, but I think that's the wrong angle to show a game from more often than not. Not that a game should need someone who plays it well to show how it's meant to be done, but I think people would appreciate that more nonetheless coming from the site.

The save system certainly is special, though, no denying that. I really like the hard save feature as it is, but it's strange that there's no auto saves ontop of that after cutscenes, etc. I haven't had a lot of problems with it, though, except for one scenario where I got stuck for a while.

Legit one of my favourite QL's, Brad did a great job at showing the different sides of the game, and was pretty decent at getting his ass in gear and not get stuck on dumb things. Dan's commentary was fucking hilarious and the whole part in which Dan is constantly teasing Brad about the Alien while nothing appears was tense as hell.

This made me super excited about picking up a current gen console early next year
