Quick Look: Assassin's Creed: Rogue

I really want this game to be good.

Waiting for the downoad, I'm expecting this to be very entertaining if not a bit disheartening?

Kind of hope this gets an "HD" release on PS4, would like some more black flagish sailing action. Not as interested in another city based game.

I'm the complete opposite, I loved the cities in the Ezio arc, and have avoided all the games since because climbing shacks and trees isn't interesting to me. I'll pick up Unity later depending on if they manage to fix some of the issues they are having.

Unsurprisingly this looks really similar to Black Flag. I wonder if it was originally intended as another downloadable title like Freedom Cry.

I don't get the logic of releasing this on 360, PS3 and PC, but not PS4 & Xbox One.

Black Flag came to PS4/Xbone and that was basically just a slightly worse looking version of the PC, so why not do the same here?

This series is unapologetically identical every year and I have no idea why people keep buying it, the campaigns are always the same since Brotherhood...

This actually looks like the Assassin's Creed game I want. Thankfully it's coming to PC next year.

Does everyone forget that Black Flag actually wasn't that good? Everything outside of main story missions was fun, but the missions themselves were all the same terribly designed missions the GB crew has been complaining about.

Wow, this looks like a better game than Unity! I think Ubi may have been spreading themselves thin a bit with two games on the go an' all.

Considering the near media silence around this game compared to Unity I am very curious about it.

Shame we don't have Danny O'Irish for this quick look but Jeff really described time-saver dlc perfectly there.

That bit of music that plays at the main menu here is the best piece of music in this series.

Is Rogue getting a PC release? I actually find the idea of playing an ex-Assassin more compelling than just another AC game.

Wow they straight up lifted entire maps and geometry out of AC3 and AC4 to make this game. Seems like a curious patchwork game cobbled together to ensure they had something for the millions-strong install-base of the previous generation.

I'm not surprised it's hard for Brad to go back to the "clunky" AC combat after playing Batman since they are different combat systems. Although they both work on the very simplistic principle of attacking and countering when a prompt comes up.

I don't want to be one of those people, although too late I guess, but Batman and Assassins Creed are very different games.

Wait... FarCry3? But, aren't there secret files and animus/abstergo references in FarCry3? So in FarCry3, Abstergo is a real thing, but in AC, FarCry3 is a game... in which Abstergo/Animus exists and oh no I've gone crosseyed...

They are and I'm kind of tired of the Batman combat system but the combat in AC as it is now is just terrible and it only got worse from AC3 to Black Flag. Less options, less animations and more and more bugs like clipping, missing sound effects and weird physics. Unity tried to go for something different and failed. This just looks like Black Flag.

I would say with time they gave you more options. The first AC game only had countering and it was pretty useless to try any sort of offense. Since AC2 they started progressively moving away from the counter system and encouraging a more offensive playstyle by giving you more moves and gadgets. The hook in Revelations was a neat addition to combat.

Of course it's all a matter of opinion. Personally I don't think it's amazing but I also don't think it's terrible. I wish they added another "layer" so to speak but when it does work it's fairly cinematic and satisfying. I'm especially fond of the silent kills on unsuspecting guards.

Jesus christ this really is AC 4 part 2. I have just played AC 4 so it's crazy to see just how much they have taken from that game and reused in this one. It's the same Abstergo environment from 4 and the song they sung on the ship in one of the cutscenes was taken directly out of 4. Also Achilles is a pretty big character in AC 3 and they also reused his home, Davenport Homestead, from AC 3.

I guess they could make this game pretty quickly by reusing a bunch of assets from the previous AC games. Ubisoft has become way too greedy this time around. Both Rogue and Unity seem extremely disappointing. I guess that's what eventually happens when you annualize a franchise.

I really liked Black Flag but this just looks very derivative. Not feeling Shay as the protagonist, either. Fake Zoe Saldana was ok though.

Finally, I've been wanting to see some video coverage of Rogue.

Well, it sound like they are making a PC version of Rogue, so I wouldn't be surprised if at some point they announce versions for the new consoles.

you don't? how about the fact that there are like 100.000 times more xboxes and ps3 than there are ps4 and xbones out there?

Seems more interesting to me than unity is. I guess Brad and Jeff really did not spend any time with assassin's creed 3. Most of the quicklook is spent at the game's base of operations.

Just because there are more of the old consoles out there doesn't mean those people are actively buying games anymore. Ubisoft released their financials recently and for 2014 32% of their sales are on ps4 followed by the xbone,pc and the old consoles which are all around 15%. It's really weird to be making a last gen only game at this time but I guess they had a lot of assets they could reuse.

@impartialgecko: I was wondering if that was Conor's Manor from AC3. I'm ok with a sort of "greatest hits" of the last two games.

Also: More French accents in this quicklook than in the one that takes place in France.

Ubisoft didn't want to create another split-gen game. Their main focus was on Unity as it's the future. If they released Rogue and Unity on the PS4 and Xbox One at the same time, it would have created self-competition. I wouldn't be surprised to see Rogue on the PS4 and Xbox One at some point in the future, though, maybe late next year, in an upcoming collectors edition.

My name is Shay and this quicklook is FREAKING ME OUT.

This looks super boring. Ubisoft really needs to change up the feel and mechanics of the series. The mechanics feel very last gen and very very slow.

Maybe it's a Yuri Lowell type of situation, though it's likely just a coincidence.
