China has perfected the art of bootlegging. Overwatch, Pokemon GO... Pretty much any big game will end up getting cloned on the cheap and put out on the Chinese app store. I'm not 100% sure how they can get away with it (I assume international copyright law is COMPLICATED), but they've been doing it for years and will probably continue to get away with it.

Boy, with this being on Steam, you have to ask what's next? Maybe Sepia GO (the Chinese Splatoon rip-off)?

Well to be fair at least this is less shameless, they didn't steal most of their assets like Sepia GO.

Box Kid is definitely a top 5 best game mascot.

Also, these intrinsically forgettable tunes. They've manipulated the melodies of Mario songs just enough where they've become incomprehensible and meaningless.

Seeing this I went ahead and bought this because

1. I'm an idiot

2. This shit's getting pulled off Steam any day now so having it in my library before it does seems like a rad thing.

Hmm OK I think I recall someone telling me kinda how that works but I'm not sure about it.

It's not like they find loopholes in copyright laws. And you can totally complain about copyright infringements to companies in China, but the government of China don't want their businesses to be hindered by copyright so they don't respond. OK... What can we do about that? Not much. Hardly a soul wants to get into political trouble with China. China is very good for trade, so **** copyright.

And I'm kinda happy about it. Cause I don't like copyright, but that's another discussion. XD Also I think this game is looking pretty bad compared to Mario Maker.

@dave_tacitus: Yeah this game Really reminded me of the BMW X5 copy. Also a reminder during the industrial revolution a lot of new machinery was copied from England with most country's not giving a fuck, China is kinda going though that phase ATM.

@jeff@danryckert Copyright only covers the stealing of actual assets. Trademarks protect actually IP (intellectual property), but you need to prove infringement in court. e.g prove developer is intentionally trying to mislead/confuse consumers into thinking this is a Nintendo property, etc.

Note: I'm no expert on this and it's a somewhat complicated subject, but that's kind of the gist of it.

@mindbullet: Overwatch wasn't actually copied; the video that went sorta viral was some game developer in China putting on an event saying "we have talented devs and can make good games" and then showing that trailer to prove that their devs knew how to make good games. They didn't actually release it or do anything with it.

You're right that gameplay isn't copyrightable or enforceable. However, there is a line where something could be considered a derivative work. The places where this game crosses the line to potentially being a derivative work is regards to some of the graphical effects that seem nearly identical to Mario Maker. However, good luck at finding the devs to sue them...

Who here has played MapleStory? Is the noise that plays when you press the Play button at the main menu not the SAME EXACT noise that plays when you join a server in MapleStory?

Yes derivative works, or things confused as such, fall under Trademark and IP protection laws. Actual gameplay (game mechanics) protection, however, is hard because it requires software patents, but most countries don't recognize them and it's still a somewhat conversational topic.

I think he was talking about them not turning into the Mega Mole sprite from SMW when turned big.
