Quick Look: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate

Well, this is it! I can't imagine we'll be hearing from this Dracula guy again after this.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

The people saying this game looks like a PS1 game are crazy. Have you gone back and looked at PS1 games? Urk. I would definitely say the graphical quality for this game is equivalent to a PS2 game though.

Really sad that they've changed the Castlevania formula so much. I know that they put out so many on the portable systems that it started to get a little stale, but it was a proven thing that just needed a couple of new ideas to get me back in each time. Making it more like a 3D God of War-ish game isn't what I'm looking for in a Castlevania game, but I'd still be more excited if they at least made the game RUN well.

@gasparnolasco: The difference is that Symphony of the Night was actually a good direction for the series. Lords of Shadow could have been, but there's not enough Castlevania in there, if you know what I mean.

After seeing SOTN yesterday... and my fond memories of the DS games... fuck this game.

Lords of Shadow might be the one good Castlevania game we've had since SoTN.

It really is.

@mattclassic: None of them is as good as SotN and they went way too far into anime territory. LoS at least brings the good old European feel of the series back.

Order of Ecclesia got it out of the anime style.

In the era of widescreen television and monitors, you should put the DS screens SIDE BY SIDE in the videos!!! Fools.

If I had a 3DS, I'd probably play this. I could give a shit about the story in Castlevania, I'm just a fan of the structure and mechanics. I loved the DS Castlevania games, and I bet I'd like this one.

@infestedandy: What many people fail to acknowledge is that the Castlevania lore was never particularly deep or consistent. There is as much Castlevania in LoS as there was in SotN. I'd even say there is more Castlevania in LoS than in most of the GBA/DS games.

Great music, but the game itself seems pretty dire.

After playing and enjoying the demo, I decided to pick up the final release and I gotta say I'm really enjoying it so far. As to Brad's point about it looking bad, yeah the framerate isn't were it should be but the game itself looks fantastic and you have to remember that this isn't a console or vita release. For a 3ds game it looks freaking stunning. As for the framerate problems I think it is a Mercury Steam thing as Lords of Shadow also had a pretty bad framerate but man did that game look stunning.

@cptbedlam: I respect your love for Lords of Shadow, but I do not share the same feeling. It's not just about the lore, it's about feel, gameplay, the name of Castlevania. LoS is the first Castlevania that's tried to represent action games such as God of War, and it does it in mediocre fashion. You seem to love this game because of the settings and the distinct European feel. While I agree that Castlevania can use a more European setting to add to the overall appeal, it's not anywhere close to the longevity and brilliance of past games.

Saying that LoS is arguably more Castlevania-esque than any oft he GBA/DS games is asinine.

@infestedandy: LoS' combat system is way more intricate and satisfying than GoW3's. LoS is not just a mediocre GoW clone. It's actually a better game (despite its flaws and not being as polished as GoW3). And it's a great Castlevania game as well. It's as simple as that. Mercury Steam does a better job at developing and presenting Castlevania lore than any team at Konami ever did. It's the best 2D>3D transition of a franchise since Metroid Prime.

And I stand by my words that the DS/GBA Igavanias, with all their anime influences, are more removed from original Castlevania than LoS.

I'm about to finish the HD version and I'm surprised by how much I enjoy it. Like Lords of Shadow, it's got this atmosphere brought on by the art and music that draws you in.

Combat's fun (on hard, at least) and the castle is interesting to explore. It's got some mechanical problems and is nowhere near as tight as the handheld ones, but it's been sticking with me for some reason. Helped that I only paid $5, I guess.

Though I'm a big fan of this new story and think this is a super fascinating chapter. First time seeing who Dracula is now... it's kind of nuts. It'll definitely play a part in your enjoyment of this.
