This video gives me flashbacks to Gorgo telling me I was weak every other turn in every game I played with her in.

I enjoyed my time with Civ VI but, much like Alex, it didn't hold my attention the way Civ V did. Though I think in part that was due to a higher volume of other games I wanted to play around the time of its release as well as being busier with real-life stuff. I liked the base game a lot, though; it certainly felt like if they were able to build on it the way V's expansions did then it could be something I'd come back to.

This sounds like a good step in the right direction, at least! I'll probably hold off for now as I'm so deep into Monster Hunter that I still don't think I'd get around to it, but if I find myself looking for games during 2018 downtime then I'll probably give this a good look.

Since it's Sean Bean - does the narrator die at some point during the game?

I got Civ VI on the $12 humble bundle steal and had about the same reaction as everyone else. I played a few games, enjoyed some of the changes, liked the graphical overhaul, but immediately fell off because of how uninteresting huge swaths of the game are. I suppose it's a strategy game tradition at this point that you buy it and wait for 2-3 expansions to turn it into a full-fledged game - Stellaris is another big culprit here recently - but I still feel like Civ V was a better starting point than this one.

The other odd thing with this expansion is that, as Alex noted, the AI never seems good at utilizing culture/influence systems offensively. Every game I've played, even on higher difficulties, the other Civs make a half-hearted effort at best in building up culture, and normally the response to me having huge culture overwhelming them is just to get pissed and declare war. I have almost no competition on the culture front generally.

I played Civ Rev a bunch and Civ V a little. This is making me want to get into Civ V again.

I'd love to see an "Alex Plays Civ" series on GB. He's really knowledgeable and good at the games.

@deathpooky: I've definitely had games in Civ 6 where I had a culture war, but you have to be "lucky" with what other civs are in the game.

I feel so bad that Civ5 ruined this game for so many of you goobers. I never played a Civ game until this and can't imagine anything better. Spent like 1000 hours playing this damn thing.

It's a very good game. I think, honestly, Civ 6 with Rise and Fall is now on par with Civ 5 with both expansions content-wise (though I'd love for that really elaborate Civil War scenario to make its way back in from 5, as well as Venice). I honestly do think part of the problem is that, in a lot of ways, Civ 5 was such a smashing success in opening up the series a bit further and people spent so much time with it that there's just an inherent reduction in return on investment. Maybe that means they should have just shook things up more for the sake of making it different, but I really think just about everything they've done from Civ 5 to Civ 6 has been a straight improvement.

Man, first Civ I've ever bounced off. It kept a lot of features from V, but trade and espionage might have been better off left out until they could have been done well, instead of the bare-bones emptiness they engender currently.

The districts seem even more annoying and far less impressive than they are in Endless Legend, I might be dumb but it's way harder to gauge the ramifications of where you place them, and it feels like annoying busywork. I feel the same way about the planetary grids in MOO2, Galciv and Stelaris though so that might just be me. Or perhaps I didn't play enough to grok the system properly, I'm sure if I'd spent CIV2/4/5 hours on it I would have been able to eyeball every potential city site.

If I spend enough on the expansion and DLC maybe it will bite, but I cannot bring myself to pull the trigger on that when I could by a whole new game or a few great indies for the same amount of money.

Still love you Firaxis, keep it up!

Not necessarily related to this particular expansion: IIRC Gandhi often went the nuclear option in the original Civ because of a bug and was intentionally programmed like that in later games. Is the Gandhi AI still shit in Civ VI?

Even tho giantbomb is what got me into civ with civ 6 this was just frustrating to watch. i got brad and dan hitman flash backs not knowing basic mechanics of the game. deleting the scout instead of just setting it on auto explore and dont care if it dies should have been the move. just disappointing video

According to this post he's more likely to get the "nuke happy" hidden agenda than most

Civ IV is my favorite game. V and VI are too simplistic to engage me but it has a nicer aesthetic since it's newer.

Er, what's with the cartoony style?

I've seen a bit of IV, played a lot of V so I'm probably not that hardcore, but this doesn't look like the serious game I once played. The animation looks good and the different languages should really get an extra star, since it's so rare to hear that in games, but the map looks... like farmville!

Music though.... that music!

But cartoons? In a strategic game about realism?

Just add Roger Rabbit while you're at it... sigh.
