Quick Look: Demon's Souls

The constant threat of losing your progress heightens the tension of the game. Definitely not for everyone, but once you get out of the starting area, you could get by by grinding souls on easier (relatively speaking) levels.

Seems interesting but, the difficulty seems way to punishing.

I bought this game and I'm really liking it. It is really friggin'  hard though. It seems also that if you just assign stat points all willy nilly without a plan towards what you want your character to be you might be boned as far as beating the game. Unlike what Jeff said though I like the combat even though it is challenging.

Brad should be locked in a room and told that he will not be able to leave until he beats that game.

Man, i wish I had the time to play this. work and school will definitely get in the way of taking on this challenge.

This game looks awesome and I can't wait to play it.
I actually already bought the Deluxe Edition even though I don't currently have a PS3.

Oh man, I'm so bummed Ryan wasn't part of this Quick Look. It sounded like he was ready to have some serious words with this game. That, coupled with Vinny, it could have been awesome.
 
Anyways, it seems like if you looked up polarizing in the dictionary, Demon's Souls would be right there. You either dig it or you don't.  
 
It does have the honor of having the ugliest character creator I've ever seen. They have a strange definition of male and female. Heh.

I'm convinced the myth of this game being good was created by import shops to get people to pay 70 and up for it, and the importers don't want to admit they had a horrible mistake.

Demon's Souls is really good, and deserves the praise it's getting.

To be fair to the game, Vinny did have like a bajillion health potions and was running around with like 2 health.

Forget about buying a shitty razor to cut yourself at night.

Jeff is being way too critical. The game's systems are put in place for reasons that, I think, benefit the overall structure in pretty cool ways. I've been playing it for seven hours and I'd say it's the most fun I've had with a game all year.

I might actually have to buy a PS3 now.  This game is EXACTLY what I hoped it would be: difficult and awesome.

@Milkman: A game playing like it's dated in some way does not necessarily make it a bad game.  It just may not be a game for you, but for a hardcore traditional RPG nut like myself, this is right up my alley!

I probably don't have the time, patience (or PS3) to play this right now, but I can totally see why people love it.
 
And... is this really any more punishing than Diablo?
 
EDIT: I guess enemies don't respawn when you corpse-run in Diablo, so there's that.

sure this game is a bit too much when it comes to the overkill difficulty but i seriously dont see the hatred that alot of people have for hard games in general? do you want your games to be over in a flash and yeah i just jumped in there stod still and shot everything that moved and im a bullet spundge and cant die! yeah! thats awesome!!.... well not really... me i want a game to be somewhat hard and rewarding... alot of games ive played lately ive made it throu on hard without dying... and thats Dumb

Where's the story? You're basically just grinding souls, to progress in character terms? That's it? There's no PVP? There's no personal property beyond gear?

Wow, I would not want to play this game. I used to love hardcore mode in Diablo 2 - then I grew up realizing that wasting my time to grind stuff isn't fun anymore without a goal beyond "being the best" in a hack&slash...

I'll just wait for Dragon Age and get by by playing games that wont frustrate me to the point of high blood pressure!

 Cool. I left that "Attack" message at the part where Vinny  cut the chains in the first level like 4 days ago. So yeah pretty neat.
I have been playing since Tuesday and think the game is great. Yeah the interface is a bit convoluted but once you get past that it plays well. The tension the game makes you feel is fantastic. Once you get deep into a dungeon, and have a shit ton of souls, you really start to feel the pressure.

The game looks alright, but I've got some issues with the game in the QL. The punishment in the game seems fucking hard and you die pretty quickly (not that I don't mind since I die pretty quickly in COD4). I hate corpse running in general, the only time I ever accepted them was in Diablo II where my corpse wouldn't be too far off from someone's waypoint or whatever it was called. =P Of course this game isn't for everyone, it's challenging. I think I'll pass on this game.
 
Oh and the UI does seem clunky and pretty ugly.

Jeff whines too much.   It's just a video game.  Jeff will love those new Nintendo games that play for you. :/

I think Vinnie made a good point at the end about just needing to turn the corner so to speak and really master the mechanics. I just ordered this game yesterday online and hope it wont be the end of me

This game looks awful; why are people excited about an overly difficult and cheap game with outdated game mechanics? I don't get it!

this really looks not good.  i think people are trying to force the fun out of this.

I dont get the appeal of this game, i didn't before... even less so now.

I'm not angry at all.  I find people who can't just admit that a certain game is not for them genuinely amusing, and love taking the piss out of their weird conspiracy theories that all the people who like it are brainwashed/deluded/lying etc.

Played the Chinese release of this over the summer and it's not as hard as everyone makes it seem.  The game rewards patience.  I like it a lot.

I feel sorry for the GiantBomb crew, they're so far up their own ass that they aren't willing to give a game a chance and instead choose to cry "THis shit is crap!" even BEFORE playing the game.
 
Perhaps they'll add a Chainsaw in Demons Souls 2, maybe then Jeff will give it a fair shake?

I like the creepy sound work, the notes, and being able to watch others kick the bucket. The difficulty and punishment for dying is awesome, I was tense watching Vinny play and it was just a QL.

The comments on this video are just amazing. From the crazy rage people are spouting about anyone who likes this game, to the people coming in with the retorts. It's fun.
 
But seriously, thank you to all the people commenting that have said that they accept the fact that people like this game even if it's not for them, instead of refusing to accept it and wanting everyone who likes it to burn in hell.

I have this game and yes it's frustrating, it's cheap, and can really really make you hate video games, but dammit when you beat one of those giant bosses you feel like you could slap god across the face and he couldn't do shit. There is just something undeniable about the game that really gets it hooks into you even if you cant figure out what it is. I think that it's just the persons tastes being appealed to because most people will not like this game unless they really have an itch for this style of gameplay.
