I chuckled when Jason said that Nero is a whiny bitch. I've heard him say that so so many times.

I made the mistake of reading the youtube comments for this video. People are so dumb.

I found this video on YouTube first, once I saw the comments I just went *nope* and came back to Giant Bomb.

@missashley: That's me with fighting games. But you shouldn't worry about how you might play a certain game. As I figure it, the fervor behind Platinum's character action games is that they are relatively accessible to new players (I mean Dan beat Bayo so anybody can!) while also having a ton of depth for those who want it (Dan didn't know about dodge offset but still had a blast).

But dude. You need to play through Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta! Fuck other people, you have fun the way you wanna!

So spamming the same trinity combo over and over again still yields SSS? I remember getting a S in a DMC game actually meant something. Thanks Jason for regurgitating the stereotype that DMC-fans "can't let go". A garbage character design with a 'tude is still a garbage character design.

I really wished that Vergil's Downfall was a standalone game since that's the only thing I didn't play.

This game is so fucking rad and current-gen needed a fast paced action game like this. I know a new game would have been more desirable but at $40, this is a pretty nice deal.

I mean, Nero is totally a whiny little shit. By comparison Dante is kind of a giant dickhead, but playing as Nero? Holy shit.

It's the exceed system that makes him amazing. He's laser focused in that he only has one weapon and one gun, but mix in Exceed and he's a ridiculous fireball of action.

Just skip to like 3 minutes in on this to see what a breakdown of it.

I still haven't picked this game up over fear of "not playing it right." It's the same reason I didn't open Wonderful 101 for months and haven't opened my copy of Bayonetta 2 yet. Even though I neither play for an audience nor review games, all the hardcore fervor over character action games causes me to fear developing opinions of games based on "incorrect" play. (I haven't allowed myself to really dive into a Souls game for similar reasons.)

I'll get over it eventually. Hopefully the changes in this edition will make their way onto the PC version by then. (I don't own a PS4 or XB1.)

This is a bit strange. You can't really play these games wrong. If you are, you are probably dying constantly. As long as you understand all the systems (which aren't so bad besides something like God Hand) and just play around with them, you'll be fine. These games are about expressing yourself. Obviously there is a way to be ruthlessly efficient and take advantage of every aspect of the game, but most people don't.

This is still a bad game. I really so hope that DMC4 rerelease sells better so Capcom makes actual DMC5 rather than never touching the series again because this one sold worse than 3.

Doesn't matter if you have super valid complaints or not. I guess that what happens when you make the came as simple as God of War and everybody jumps on board because now it has zero depth whatsoever and they can just hit buttons.

This is quintessentially what being a cranky old DMC fan that can't let go is. Those old games, and by "games" I of course only mean DMC 3, were just as deeply flawed as they were great. Games evolve and in the process there are changes we need to adapt to. I get you guys, really I do - I loved Fallout 1/2 and think that both Fallout 3 and New Vegas aren't really Fallout games, much less very good games overall. That is my own hump I have to get over I suppose.

Incidentally what did you guys think of Bayonetta, since DmC plays similarly to it. If you honestly think that DMC 3 was better than Bayonetta than I can without a doubt say you are having a hard time moving on.

So I need to get used to a character that is a total shitbird and dumbed down gameplay to the point where it's just hitting buttons is just something I have to get used to because games change? That sounds like changing for the worse, do why should I have to get used to it? I'm with you on the Fallout games, even if I quite like New Vegas for being the best Fallout game you could probably get out of that Elder Scrolls gameplay. You're basically saying that we all just have to get used to Transformers and movies like it because people like them and if you don't like them or say anything bad about them you're a grumpy grandpa. If something is lesser than what it was before I'm gonna call it out. If something is bad I'm gonna call it out. That's just how I am and it's really shitty that you can't even do that with this game or those new Fallout games because people just disregard you as a "grumpy fanboy that can't keep up with the times". On the Bayonetta subject I actually feel like it plays totally different than DmC. Both games are super accessible, but there is a lot of depth to Bayonetta if you get into it. It feels like an actual natural progression of DMC games where DmC feels like a God of War or Dante's Inferno game. I probably like DMC3 more, but I think Bayo feels better in the hands. DMC4 is still probably has the best combat system in a game like this though.

They're not putting this out on PC from what I can tell.

That's pretty silly - I want these features (lock-on with health indicators?? TURBO??) and would really prefer not to pay full price when this could likely just be a paid expansion-type thing on PC.

I've always found this game to be the Devil May Cry game for people who don't give a shit about Devil May Cry, and as someone who never gave a shit about Devil May Cry this worked 100%. I absolutely loved this game way more than any of the games before it as well as the characters and story were vastly more interesting to me. I look forward to eventually picking this up again.

@jesushammer: "Games evolve and in the process there are changes we need to adapt to."

An irrelevant point when considering what has defined this as the "definitive edition", and makes it the improved, must-play version, are the reinstated gameplay mechanics, the omission of which were much complained about in the run up to DmC's release.

Manual Lock-on, an increase to the speed (notable when DMC fans complained that DmC felt slow), the control scheme being fixed to resemble the original, and a return to freestyle combos instead of a focus on Simon Says Red or Blue - all of these have been done in an effort to make the game play more like DMC3 instead of DmC. Truly, we are witnessing evolution here. If you want to talk about evolution, Hardcore and the Must-Style modes are the efforts that I would consider to be a true evolution on the original DMC formula, and a welcome addition.

As far as I'm concerned, this maligning of the "old DMC fans" stinks of a superiority complex built on your ideal version of the game; a version that was critically well received yet slammed by the old fanbase. In my world that's a failure, and I'm glad to see Capcom agrees with me.

Also there were a couple of levels that were pretty neat as well. The ones I can remember were the TV station and the Night Club.

When it comes to combat styles, Nero > Dante = Donte

Mastering the rev timing on Red Queen was the most fun I've had in any DMC game. I hope the next DmC brings that mechanic back.

EDIT: Are people really still complaining about Donte's attitude? Really? He does absolutely nothing wrong throughout the entire game. He tries to protect civilians, he gives everyone a fair chance to prove themselves trustworthy, he has a code of justice and honour and does his best to live up to it. The only "bad" things he does is swear at people who want to kill him, and drink/smoke/have sex more than the average person. Donte literally never says a mean thing to anyone who isn't trying to actively kill him. What the hell is wrong with that? Jesus H. Christ people, this is the 21st century.

I guess the best I can say is they tried here. It's still damage=rank, the bosses are still bad, and the story is still bad while taking itself super serious with a lame edgy teenager doing edgy teenager things as the protagonist. At least Capcom is appealing to everybody with this and the DMC4 rerelease.

Yup, another person hoping for a PC release. This version still isn't up to snuff compared to that release from 2 years ago. The game runs at MOSTLY 60 FPS, with SLIGHT screen-tearing on X1 and NO AF on PS4 (according to the excellent Eurogamer Digital Foundry analysis). How? Why? I can play this at 120 FPS with 3x (i.e. higher than 4K resolution) DSR and forced 16x AF on my PC, which is fairly fast but not a $2000 beast of a machine or anything.

As a person with terrible reflexes, take it from me, you can play this game at a completely casual level and still enjoy the hell out of it. Normal difficulty is perfectly approachable for an average person and easy difficult is well and truly easy. Disregarding the difficulty, if you're worried about whether you'll find it entertaining without engaging with the combo system - don't. Even if you don't care about your combat score, the presentation and spectacle are well worth seeing (same with Bayonetta).

Other than God of War 1, I haven't really played modern combo-based brawlers like DmC and it was my personal favorite game of 2013.

@xel: By no means do I have a superiority complex. I simply think those older DMC games were clumsy in many ways that I found the new DmC wasn't. I can agree that maybe exaggeration falls on both sides of the spectrum. The people who enjoy the new game perhaps are too brash with labeling those who don't as stubborn and unable to move on, while at the same time those oldschool fans that consider this game "garbage" and not worthy of the Devil May Cry name are also exaggerating quite a bit as well. It's a really good character action game with a solid fighting system and some awesome level design.

I don't really have much more to say about it. The people who like it continue to like it and those who don't continue to bemoan how much more superior those decade old games are. There is no pleasing the old in this regard and those who enjoy it won't be suddenly swayed into seeing the error of their ways.

I see (or rather hear) Dan "The Nature Boy" Ryckert is back in this Quick Look. XD

@humanity: I fall into both camps. This is a great game with some really cool levels and I actually prefer what they did with the story to the Japanese nonsense in the old games. But gameplay-wise it offers nowhere as much depth and challenge as DMC 3 and 4. Or Ninja Gaiden or Bayonetta for that matter. It's really much closer to God of War's combat (I love the first two games in that series as well, so there's that).

And apparently the devs tried to rectify all the things people were complaining about with the Definitive Edition. Turbo mode, hardcore mode, the lock-on and not having to switch between colors for those Simon Says enemies were made specifically to please the fans. If they succeeded this might actually be a worthy successor AND good game in its own right. Again, I'm just waiting and hoping for a PC release where the true Definitive Edition starts.

Also, everyone buy Ori and the Blind Forest. It's soo GOOOOD.

Edit: I just noticed I partially regurgitated @Xel's comment. Sorry, I didn't see it before.

Hey @danryckert if you're interested in using your PS4 controller on your PC check out the driver done by Scarlet.Crush over on the PCSX2 forum. It can be a little bit tricky to get installed but shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. Once you get the driver installed just connect your controller with the micro usb cable and it will pair for bluetooth or you can use it wired if you like. After that there is no additional launching of software when you start up your PC. Just press the PS button on your controller and you're ready to go. It basically acts like your PC is a PS4. It emulates a 360 controller so it works with any game that the 360 pad does. I've been using this driver since the PS4 came out and it's been amazing. I've actually tried the program that you mentioned in this quick look and I could never get it to work with my bluetooth dongle.

Yeah, only thing DMC4 has over 3 is some of the level design is better, and obviously is better looking in kind of every way. As well, Nero had some really cool mechanics, though not much more than a really well done DMC3 Style. To the effect if they made a DMC5, though could just add Nero as a style and update/polish the existing ones to feel as unique.

Also DMC3 had co-op.

I'm doing the same thing with W101, the Bayonettas and a bunch of the other Platinum games. I bought a guide for Vanquish and have a bunch of youtube videos bookmarked of different games to try to get a bunch of tips before playing more of them. I've been right in the middle of playthroughs of W101 and Metal Gear Rising and haven't got back to them in months because I want to learn more before going back in because I didn't feel like I was doing well enough. It's weird.

One thing I really like about Dan-Jason Quick Looks is that they've been working together for years, so they've got a really excellent rapport and they know each other really well, and it's a huge bonus that this game is one that they both know very well and they both enjoyed...

What I'm trying to say is that this whole fucking Quick Look, top to bottom, is fucking butter. This whole goddamn production is polished to a mirror shine and greased with bacon fat.

Smooth.
