Quick Look: Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi

@Olivaw: I enjoyed Tenkaichi 1 & 2 a lot, and I agree that they captured the feel of the series very well. However, I like my fighting games with some depth in them and I felt like Budokai 3 was a great mix of accessibility and depth which is why I prefer it over the Tenkaichi games. I'd say that the Budokai games are the better Dragon Ball fighting games while the Tenkaichi games are the better Dragon Ball games; this is the same reason why I loved the Naruto Clash of Ninja series and dislike the Ultimate Ninja series.

The style of gameplay of the earlier Tenkaichi games was an interesting idea but its execution left a lot to be desired. By Tenkaichi 3, I was completely burnt up on the "one button for normal attacks and one button for special attacks" combat system, and this one looks like they just decided to scrap the interesting concept of free movement combat of the earlier Tenkaichi games instead of trying to improve upon it and then turned the game into a bunch of "cinematic", boring bullshit.

But in the end who cares. Anime games will continue being just anime games. They'll cover the same plot lines over and over again and continue taking one step forward and two steps back in terms of quality with each game. I really wish somebody would do for licensed anime games what Rocksteady did for licensed comic-book games.

I love how Ryan tries to end the quick look 25 minutes in and then it just keeps going.

Ryan. I particularly don't like the death of ciatozou. It chills me to the core.

I honestly think a Dragon Ball game that I played a year ago on my PS2 looked more fun than this game...

Did you even watch the Quick Look? Vinny and Ryan clearly know more about Dragon Ball Z than anyone else in the office. Not to mention that they are fairly kind to this game and the series in general. But seriously, I like DBZ and share about the same amount of knowledge as these two do, but if you're going to get uppity about misinformation about DBZ video games on the internet, it's time to reassess your life choices, buddy.

Man, the Dragon Ball QL's are ALWAYS great.

@Milkman: Pretty sure you misinterpreted what he said. His problem with the QL isn't that they aren't knowledgeable of the series or its games, but rather that they're just really not into the game they're playing. I haven't watched this QL yet so I don't know what it's like, but I know some in the past have been unenjoyable for me because those playing couldn't stop groaning.

Don't select the YouTube option then? If you are subscriber you can choose between Streaming, Progressive, HTML5 or YouTube. Would it hurt to look around a bit before complaining?

Also FYI GB videos have always been 360p unless you are subscriber using the HD option.

@mnzy: Yeah you're totally right. I kind of overshot that one. Probably somewhere in the 10-15 year ago range.

Of course with a show that spans like 400+ episodes I'm sure the show itself lasted a good 7-8 years of fresh content anyway. At least in Japan.

Oh my god has it really been 15-20 years? I guess that the stuff in Japan was way ahead of the American version, by years even, but I can't believe it's been that long.

After some Wikipedia research I've determined some crazy facts.

It debuted in 1989 in Japan and a couple years later in the US. There were 291 episodes of DBZ and then 64 more episodes continuing the story (sort of) in DragonBall GT. I just can't believe that from 1989 to 1997 they made over 350 episodes.

The story of the shows production is almost as insane as the show itself.

This combat is a huge step backwards, but that character creator... MAAAAAAAAAAAAN. Gimme some of that in a proper tenkaichi game please.

Super Saiyan (aka SSJ) 4 is the fourth and, as far as I'm concerned, ultimate step in the SSJ power up system in the DBZ/Saiyan universe. Gogeta (who makes an appearance in this QL) is the combined form of Goku and Vegeta after the Fusion process (the 'Go' is from Goku, the 'geta' is from Vegeta). Vyan is the combined form of Vinny and Ryan after Fusion, and SSJ4 Vyan... I tremble to even imagine a power that vast...

I think this Quick Look holds the record for amount of time between someone saying they want to end the Quick Look (at around 35 minutes) to the actual Quick Look end.

Yeah dbz was a product of the early 90s that didn't get dubbed until the late 90s and not really aired on TV outside japan until the early 2000s. I remember watching it in japanese with a friend in 94 or 95 when I was like 7 or 8, having no clue what the characters were saying or doing lol.

@Lazyaza: I actually remember doing the same thing, but I remember it being totally mind blowing at the time. The acttion was like nothing I'd ever seen in animation. DBZ coming to the states started a big wave of really cool action cartoons, the likes of which had never really been seen over here.

I feel like these games should have you playing as Napa in the start, since he's the one who's supposed to win.

Dragon Ball Z Kai fixed that problem, and it actually looks amazing on blu-ray.
