I really liked the original game, so I might have to check this out. Picked it up after the Quick Look and played all the way through it. I love the mechanics of it - works really well in single player or multi-player. I played through it by myself and it gets pretty tough sometimes!

Great Quick Look, you can tell how passionate and enthusiastic the designer is without being over the top. I picked Chariot up during Games with Gold, but didn't really give it a go as I don't really have a couch co-op partner (sad), but this video makes me want to try it even just solo, (and take a look at the DLC).

This idea looks so grat (and execution too). I would only fear it would wear too thin too quickly. But thats probably where the coop factor steps in.

Hopefully we can get a Paxmainia style rivalry going. With steel chairs. Get working on it @havochq!

This is flat-out the most *interesting* Quick-Look EX I've watched here. Fascinating chat about design stuff. And a cool looking game too; definitely one I need to check out.

Had a lot of fun playing this co-op. Didn't get very far though, been meaning to play more of it.

Thank you so much for the kind words everyone! It really warms my heart. ^^ I had a blast participating in the making of Chariot - and this video! - and it's awesome to see people liking them.

@havochq: you didn't get to finish your comment about what inspired the jumping mechanics! I'm curious!

Great quick look. Charming game!

Thank you! :D Oh yeah, the jumping! Our biggest inspiration for the character mechanics was Mega Man 2. Since the chariot is ruled by physics and players can only indirectly control it, I felt they had to have perfect control over their character - and in my mind, Mega Man 2 was it. Start and stop on a dime, perfect air control and the ability to stop a jump cold by letting go of the button. We fiddled and tweaked the actual numbers for a while, but in the end we all were really happy with how the characters moved.

The rope mechanics, however, took way longer, because physics. Thankfully, our team was full of extremely talented programmers, and they managed to wrangle the physics engine and make everything feel perfect. :D

(An extra note on jumping: our creative lead & programmer Philippe thought up a neat little mechanic where you actually have a grace period when you're jumping off the edge of a platform. You have maybe half a second to jump after you've started falling - try it out! It can really make the difference when you want to jump up and around to a platform above you.)

A really delightful QL EX. The dev was great and all the chaos that happened when the guys played, convinced me to actually give this game a shot.

Game looks great and totally charming, but your programmer didn't think up the grace period after you fall off a ledge ... thats been used in platformers for years if not decades! Excellent QLEX though and it was fun hearing the discussions on game design.

Really liked the commentary—Alex seems like a wonderful person. I'm always interested in hearing game dev stories and how e.g. the mechanics come into place, so there's some good stuff in here. Physics-based puzzle/platformer games aren't really my bag, but I'll probably give this a shot some time.

One thing I will say though is that I think a DLC pack that doesn't have extra content in the form of levels is kind of bonkers. This game's been out for a while now, so the people who really liked it probably already have beaten it and therefore I can't imagine them wanting to do it again with new gadgets, and the people who touched it a few times for Games For Gold and gave up seem unlikely to buy DLC for the game. It just seems very odd to me, but hopefully I'm wrong.
