Brain freeze protip: Drink a mouthful of water. Brainfreeze comes from something cold being caught in your throat, not from the roof of your mouth being cold. Water will wash the cold thing into your stomach and solve the problem

On the game itself, I think the city meta-layer with its apparently massive number of menus and screens looks pretty awesome. Unfortunately, the way the tactical combat looks implemented seems terrible; at least to my tastes.

This looks like the sort of thing I will buy on sale, forget about, then find in my steam list three years from now and become obsessed with.

I hate to say it but this QL seems to have kinda missed one of the main mechanics of the game. :(

You can, and nearly always should, plan out ENEMY actions as well. When you simulate the turn before they see you (when they still have circles under their feet) the game will show exactly what they will do. Once you're detected, they'll simply stand in place during simulations -- UNLESS you click on them and give them a (theoretical) order. You can give them orders exactly the same way you give you own units orders, then simulate again to see how well your plan will account for wherever they may go.

That (to me) is basically the bulk and fun of the entire game. Check what enemies might do, plan around it, second guess yourself and make a different plan, third guess yourself and make ANOTHER plan, then execute and watch as they do something completely different.

Combat is entirely deterministic -- there aren't any dice rolls. If you plan right, you know exactly what'll happen and can account for anything.

Pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth does nothing comments! Your tongue is probably cold too! Ben and Jan are right! Use your thumb! Video games?! What are those? Lol.

I have never heard of this press-the-top-of-your-mouth thing. Seriously, just drink some water. Fixes brain-freeze instantly.

Does anyone who has played this game know if you can stealth kill with the knife guy at the beginning of missions? Just curious.

I really like the first Frozen Synapse soundtrack, but never invested time into the game itself. I'm not much of a tactics player, so it didn't hook me at all. After playing Into the Breach, I may be more open to this, but it still looks overwhelming to me. I may just be kidding myself with how accessible ITB was. I'll definitely be checking out the soundtrack though. I like what I've heard so far. Very chill.

Heh, glad I'm not the only one who got reminded of that when the map pulled out to the city and Jan started explaining.

Yeah, this was a huge part of getting good at FS1, and although I haven't played 2 yet, I have to assume it still holds true. It's very chess-like in that respect, with fewer pieces but each piece having infinite options at their disposal. You end up having to think n-steps ahead, and - taking into account the quirks of the actions available to your units - deciding how best to mitigate potential failure scenarios and maximize potential successful scenarios.

I would sit and think for a looooooong-ass time between turns, and have gotten angry messages about it from other players. It's an async game for a reason yo, you're in the wrong damn department if you want instant gratification.

Anyway this looks great, and the soundtrack sounds just as amazing as those from the original game & expansion. Thanks, Jan!

Yeah, especially when he said he needed to have a contract with a supplier of explosives in order to equip the grenadier class and all that, it really sounded like the corporation mechanics of Apocalypse (where you could lose your ability to quickly move around the city by antagonizing the taxi company).

I saw Waypoint preview this game and I was enraptured by its music. While I'm not looking to play a tactical game right now, I'm defintiely picking up the soundtrack. You can check out the fantastic Frozen Synapse 2 soundtrack here.

Was the combat phase in 1 less complex than this as they say? Most of the actions & the waypoint system seems somewhat similar to me.

To be honest, it looked super similar to the first game until they zoomed out on the city map and it was a huge extra layer on top of the game they made before.

@onemanarmyy: I forget just how big the option wheel was, but it was the same waypoints, select movement speed, and focus on a target/look in a direction.

Been years, but a common strategy I recall was to run, stop at a doorway/window, aim into the door and slowly strafe past, look forward, and run to the next door. All on the same turn.
