I kind of how love how the menus and UI looks, in a weird way. And the lush music.

EDIT: Those etiquette videos are amazing, insane and amazing. What IS this game? What is Gran Turismo now? What happened to the PS1 era GT of just going in and racing? Also that music during the sportsmanship video sounds like an instrumental version of a Coldplay song.

Seems like they're chasing after the iRacing crowd, whom Jeff and Brad seem unfamiliar with. What's the point of racing the way they describe where the person in the best shape after the first turn wins? I appreciate this sportsmanship stuff, good direction for them.

This is going to be a divisive one. I know some people are going to be into the iRacing pivot, but this is definitely not going to appeal to the broad audience that previous Gran Turismo games have.

A lot of people are going to buy this because it says Gran Turismo on the cover and be completely put off by what's here.

I'm not super into this being a stripped down version of a Gran Turismo game (but god knows we'll never see a full one this console cycle), but god I love GT driving school tests. I think I'm the only one. Why can't other games do that.

Wow, the driving school stuff seems to have about as many features as GT3 on the PS2, which I played a few weeks ago. I can drive in real life, but fucking suck at driving in GT. It frustrates me to no end why the games won't provide more feedback/advice about what your doing wrong in the "driving school" section.

The mystery guy is in fact Patrick Demsey. He's been interviewed saying that he acts to pay for his racing hobby.

I like the Sportsmanship Rating stuff, but the game does a piss poor job at explaining it. Watching 3 minutes of videos with no practice isn't enough to ask people to play differently than they're used to from every other game except iRacing. I can't blame Jeff and Brad for missing a lot. These are great changes that are poorly implemented.

Also WTF. Forza and Gran Turismo both abandoned the one thing that made them unique, picking any car, upgrading it, tuning it, testing it, learning it, and using it for almost any race. The feeling that any of the cars in either game are yours is completely gone. When I'm picking a car in this game, I'm like "i guess i'll take that" instead of wanting a car because it's fun. They don't even surface the car stats when picking a car from a lobby.

The people they're going after are playing iRacing. That's not to say nobody else should try that, but I feel like the people that would enjoy this most are all in and playing something crazy on PC. Source: I'm the person they made this for and would rather step back to Forza or old GT, or step forward and play iRacing when I want that. This takes a step without going all the way.

I think this game is trying to compete with Trackmania for an award on the "most amount of hud on racing game" category.

Man I really wanted a good racing game but Forza 7 is a cluster fuck of microtransactions and this seems insane in a bad way. If I wanted to get some real "sportsmanship" where everyone takes it seriously I would go all the way and just play iRacing. I guess there is Project Cars but I do miss the high production value that comes when a mega corporation puts a racing game out, oh well.

Boy, it's really weird to hear them talk about it so negatively and be going "this looks great" all along. Like, I wasn't even planning to get this, but the tone and goals of this thing are way more interesting to me than I anticipated... which I found out about by watching Jeff crap on it for 50 minutes.

Opinions are weird.

Some of the photo realistic modes look very well detailed and real, looks neat in the menus, but is it just me or when your actually racing...does the game look some what dated? it looks less fluid, maybe it's the framerate. Something looks off about it when compared to other racing games.

Came for the cars, stayed for the ghost talk.

Eventhough it's dumb, i do like the idea of having a mouse cursor on a console.

Still not sure why you can't have an esports game without having timers on a race. Dota doesn't have timers like that, League doesn't, CSGO doesn't, Quake doesn't. Why does this need it?

Like i can understand it if you're in this grand tournament finals that's being broadcast and all the top racers need to be there at a specific time. But why do all races have to be structured like that? Does it matter who wins a first round match if there are ten thousand sessions being played at the same time? Why not start structuring it a bit more once you get to the top 500 drivers or something?

An enormous amount of racing illiteracy that has lead to some of the confusion and exasperated comments by the team here (you can totally be in front of another car, get bumped, and be in the wrong, in the right circumstances). And I don't blame them, for all the tutorialising and talking about the 'sport' moniker and FIA credentials, GT:S has done a pretty awful job of actually explaining to non-race fans what it means to race fair. I guess in the end, this game is for a very specific section of the racing market.

Beyond that, it probably also does an inequitable job of enforcing those same rules, further exacerbating the troubles they speak of.

This is so close to what I want from a racing game: remove the pokemon and gated progression nonsense aspects and just give me racing. But I need more tracks and more roads cars to get right in. Somewhere between this and GT4/Forza 3 is probably what I'm after. Maybe I should dig into some PC racers...

/edit: rewatching the online race. The ghosting in that is awful. I'm certain that will be changed down the line.

@elfinke: Yeah, I have a passing interest in racing so I understand WHY they're doing what they're doing but they have missed the entire boat on educating players.

2 minute video with some highlights about what NOT to do and then a penalty/rewards system for poor/good driving that is inconsistent and extremely vague. That's all they've got. If at the end of the race it spat out a list of the infractions you committed that could go a long way towards drivers improving their sportsmanship.

tl;dr Cars look pretty.

Since this game is all about driver etiquette and following FIA guidelines, it should've integrated a driver rating system a la Need for Speed Shift/Project Cars. Let people know how to actually get better at simulation racing.

I feel that this would be made better if it just said "Penalty: <reason>". There's so much other HUD on the screen that it feels weird to leave out something that would actually guide the player to improve.

I also feel like anyone who wants to get in as deep as this appears to be aiming is probably better served by the PC (and is probably already there). Even the menus look like a PC game that was ported to PS4. I could be wrong, but I don't see the audience for this sort of game being on console.

That's what I don't get - mandatory videos/information explaining how to race properly could be huge in improving the way people race on line.... and half of the first one is discussing the definition of sport. It just feels like a waste of time and a missed opportunity - a simple do/don't list (potentially with video examples) would be much more useful. The second video gets into some of that, but framing it as "driving that makes you look bad" and there not being an exhaustive list of rules, rather than just saying driving like this isn't allowed, doesn't seem like the right tone to take.

I am honestly taken aback by just how misguided and incoherent everything about this game except for the driving itself is. Like, I suddenly want the tell all book about all the bad decisions that led them to make the game like this.

It's a bummer too, because I was really looking forward to playing a Gran Turismo for the first time in forever.

Jeff was asking what the intended crowd thinks of this, and I think I fit very neatly into that category. I've been playing racing sims for many years and take it quite seriously. I've played Gran Turismo with a group of friends online for years and we've played every GT entry extensively.

So far we all love it. The most important thing this game enables is consistent clean racing online with other people in your skill level. If you take the racing seriously this is next to impossible in most games other than iRacing (and SRS with Assetto Corsa on PC). But even those have a much much smaller user base and generally a much more serious and even more pompous vibe. I liken this game to iRacing for the masses rather than simply another GT entry.

As far as the actual game is concerned, everyone seems to agree that it's a marked improvement over GT6 in terms of physics and force feedback on a wheel, but it's still not quite there with games like Assetto Corsa.

Bummed to hear Jeff doesn't like it but that's not surprising really. I'll be playing the ever loving shit out of it and thrilled that I have a game that provides consistent clean and competitive racing.

Edit: Just wanted to address a few things people seem a bit fuzzy on in here. Firstly the SR- it's super easy to look at the SR down and think you're being punished unjustly- but in my experience it's absolutely fine. You'll notice he's gaining SR consistently while racing cleanly, and at the end of the race it's the culmination of SR that gets reported to your score (which shows if you went up or down at the end of the race). If you race clean your safety rating will go up even with a few incidents here and there. I played the closed beta extensively and can attest that the system is quite just.

Oh and as far as ghosting goes, ghosting is completely eliminated as you climb the SR ranks. Rooms with a low SR average will have more ghosting. IIRC a safety rating of A average in a room means that there is 0 ghosting no matter what.
