I'm not sure that I like the design of Pit. He looks and moves too much like he did in Smash Bros, which I'm not into. I thought his design was fine for that game, but I sorta wanted them to dial it back if he got his own someday.

The menus also look very Smash Bros-like, in fact the whole game feels very Smash Bros-y, with the egg launcher that seem similar to the coin machine of that series, for example. Considering the developer I guess you can't be too surprised.

And I guess I can't fault them for going completely wild when designing this game either. Being such an old series with only 2 previous entries it didn't have much of an identity that they could build on. In fact, I kinda like the idea of making it a fast paced, combat heavy action game series that doesn't take itself too seriously...even if the controls for this game in particular seem kinda messy.

If that's the direction they are taking it however, then I would be very interested in seeing what they could make for a console such as the WiiU.

I bet they explained why he can't fly during the running sequences. Brad has problems getting what a game does and what it doesn't do. For example the scarves in Journey being longer, because you played through the game and the length carrying over through playthroughs, which is not true at all. And I remember the Uncharted 3 beta, holy Jeebus, why is it so hard to explain something or pay attention when you play it(before the QL). Same thing during the podcast when they talked about Journey

So what do you do?

Brad: You go on a Journey.

What do you do exactly?

Brad: it has all the trappings of a video game.

Gee thanks for that awesome explanation, Jeff summed that shit up in one sentence, but Brad can't explain game mechanics for shit.

Love you guys, but seriously sometimes I wish you put just a tad more effort into these. How much time would it have taken to record 30 seconds showing Brad playing the game and splicing it into the Quicklook, if in fact thats such a big deal.

That's a lot of venom. I can't really say I disagree though. The stand and control scheme has received more attention than the game itself. GB even did an unboxing video for the stand, yet they choose not to show it in use.

Not at all, no venom intended. As I said I love the site and the content they produce - but despite all that it's hard not to notice when they just don't put in the extra effort, or some might say, the minimal effort at times. I understand the quantity issue - if they have only two computers that can render videos and it takes 4-5 hours for a 45 minute quicklook to render in 720p then I completely see why we might get only two of them a day. The quality though I just don't understand.

Why is everyone so cranky? Just relax and enjoy it. Let's not become like other shit gaming communities.

Anyways the game itself always looked awesome to me. The controls are what worry me. I'd love to test it out at a demo station somewhere. Or maybe I could just get myself a circle pad pro.

Brad seems really down on this game. That's a shame since it's awesome.

Also a ton of the things he doesn't know are in the tutorial. Kind of a bad QL.

Shame that being a left-handed I will not be able to play this. It's impossible for me to move with the analog stick, and use a stylus with my right hand to aim whilst simultaneously shooting without a Circle Pad pro which are unfortunately not sold in my country. Dammit Nintendo!

@Rox360: I can't really speak for the original DS, but compared to a DSlite the 3DS is pretty much the same size but noticably heavier, also the + button is in kind of an awkvard position to make room for the analog...thing, whatever-it-was-called.

I guess the increased weight is the issue here, I could see it being a problem myself if you were to hold the system without support over an extended period of time.

You can use the ABXY to move and the stylus to aim. In fact you can map the controls however you like.

Probably because I was playing it on a capture kit that has two gigantic heavy-gauge cables coming out of the cartridge slot that no regular consumer will ever have to deal with? You know, the same giant cables you can see for yourself at the end of the video.

This is getting sad. If you produce ignorant content its not a suprise the community is reflecting your ignorance and building opinions on the game that are false and based on ignorance.

Please people just get this game its so amazing. Theres more control options you will know to do with, and its deeper than any handheld game you have ever seen.

Looks pretty cool thanks to this awesome video. I wonder how much of that self aware writing was added by the localization team and how much is in the original Japanese text. Pit is definitely the one Captain N character that has changed the least within his respective video games, of which there are few. Box Art Mega Man would have made a way cooler character in that cartoon. I can picture him getting wasted and trying to awkwardly play the "Game Boy".

Its in the japanese version as well, at least in the 1h demo I played way back before the 3DS was even released.

So, yeah, the tone is pretty much the same Id recon.

This seems like a game that would strongly benefit from dual analog sticks.

Also why would you want to stop moving to dash. That seems silly to me. A lot of the item progression and unlocks seem cool, but the controls look like shit.

Game has looked awesome from all the footage I've seen. I think Brad did a good job here of showing off how deep the game does get and just how much STUFF is in it. It's definitely made me think about getting a 3DS for this game.

Great quicklook! The meta stuff is pretty fantastic, I probably would not give this game a second glance if not for the humor. I still lack a 3DS though, but this is something I might be interested in; there's not enough original properties on the system.

@isnipeyoudie: I am left handed as well but after trying out all the control methods I just resorted to using the default right handed controls. It seems really counter-intuitive to me to move using my right hand instead of my left after years and years of using a controller. It took a little while, but I did get used to using the stylus with my right hand after a few tries.

That's some Sakurai-ass menu designs.

That treasure grid was in Kirby Air Ride for example. Just the style of the buttons feel like something he's been involved in and unlocking trophies using the Trophy lottery in Smash Bros. Melee feels similar to that idol toss thing as well.

For what it's worth, there are restrictions on using some of that capture gear for portables. You're not actually supposed to show anyone what one of those kits look like. If you ever watch GameCenter CX, you can see at Indie Zeros some cobbled together cardboard... DM Shields, I guess, so you can watch Kacho play games without seeing the capture units.

As is my understanding, those rules are handed down by Nintendo and you don't fuck with them because if they cut you off, you're done.

I didn't even realize that, but you're absolutely right. Almost copy-pasted frame by frame.

Certainly not a bad thing, gives those menu's a bit of style and life to them; looks to work well with a stylus as well.

Silly Brad, you don't have to stop to dash. Just double tap the circle pad in the direction you want to go.

And I believe Drew was referring to the little analog nub thing that was attached to the wrist strap that was included with the original Nintendo DS. I occasionally used it for parts in Mario 64 that required more precision than the D-pad allowed for.

I really like this Kid Icarus game, though I agree that more customization options in the controls would be better (such as letting you use the Circle Pad Pro the way a normal person would want to use it).
