You're not crazy Drew; I've still got that very lanyard attached to my DS (it's a DS fat though, never upgraded past...).

If you were on the fence about this game, don't let this video dissuade you. It's actually a lot more fun than it's made to seem here, provided that, unlike Brad, you actually know what you're doing.

Honestly, I do apologize for being so tactless about it, but this game is really, really good, though you'd never get that impression from watching this QL.

Fuck that. Being a subscriber in no way gives you the right to dictate content. You're free (even encouraged) to make all the suggestions you want, but at the end of the day it's their site, not yours.

Why do you think they constantly ask subscribers for their opinions on things? Because without the people viewing the site... there wouldn't be a site.

Of course they ask for opinions, but at the end of the day they do things a certain way and ain't nothing or nobody gonna change that. If your argument is "I'm paying you so you have to do what I say," then you're little better than publishers who threaten to pull ad money over a bad review.

Great game so far with tons of side things to do and I like how "self aware" the game is on the video-gamey level. It's not a dry game by any means, it's quite silly with a certain level of depth in a few areas also. Haven't checked out the MP yet, but can't wait as it seems pretty cool.

The stand sounds ridiculous at first but in use makes the game a bit more enjoyable. I play the game here at my computer desk anyhow so not having to support it and control it is nice. For $40 and my tastes, it's a game with legs and worth it.

Not surprised to see Project Sora using the good old SSBM/Kirby Air Ride/SSBB style UI. It's pretty much become a trade mark for most HAL games.

Also the controls for this game sound like they'd work best if you had your hands resting on a surface while you hold the 3DS if you don't want to use the (clunky looking) stand. Holding the DS up in the air is always tiring after a while.

Isn't it a little ridiculous that the controls are so bad you have to use a stand to play? A stand for a portable game? :s

For ideal use of this game without the stand, use the palm on your right hand to balance from the bottom right hand corner of the 3DS.

There were metroid(s) in the original Kid Icarus.

Also he couldnt really fly in that either, there was the feather item but even that just saves you from a fall.

That can't possibly be true. Why would they design a weapon, show your character model holding it, but then it's just a trophy?

Is it really not something else? Multiplayer-only weapon or something?

It really is just a trophy. That's what the idols are. If you want the actual weapon, you have to either acquire it in a stage, buy it, or acquire it through fusion. The egg minigame isn't any different from the trophy acquisition minigames in the Smash Bros. series.

Ohhhhhh, OK. So the Ore Club does actually exist as a weapon, but the egg thing just unlocked the corresponding trophy for the weapon. That makes sense.

This seems like a game that would strongly benefit from dual analog sticks.

Or just a game that's aping dual sticks with what it's got. No judgement on the game itself (I got a great deal of fun out of/had no issue with the controls after an hour with Peace Walker), but is it the business with the stand that elicits "new and weird" and not "a hamstrung console experience"?

@troticielo: I think it would control poorly with dual analog. The problem lies with the land segments and how you control the reticle and the camera at once instead of just the camera.

I personally think the game would work better on the Wii with Wiimote + Nunchuck.

This control scheme has been around for the last DS though, especially with first person shooters. Why's it such a problem now? The 3DS isn't so much heavier than the DS that it causes a bigger problem, right?

I am genuinely impressed by what I've seen of this game in the Quick Look. The graphics are Wii quality, it has a lot of personality, the action looks like a lot of fun, and there is a ton of stuff to do. If the controls weren't so poor, this would be a must-have. I still want to buy this, though; it looks too darn good to pass up.

Exactly. The only bad thing with this setup is having to hold the 3DS with one hand for extended periods of time. Hence, the stand.

Wow, they both portrayed the game as having unplayable controls or something. If you've ever played Metroid Prime Hunters (or any other DS fps), they're pretty much the exact same. I haven't even used the stand so far, I'm just using my leg/knee to support the 3DS. I seriously don't understand what the complaints are. :/

While I know they don't really play much before these quick looks, having Brad find something he doesn't know (or doesn't read to find out what it is) and then just go "huh" is always annoying. It's even worse when they just say things that are flat out wrong. Oh, and lol @ people whining at others because they're posting their opinions of the videos in the comments section. That's what comments sections are for. I'm just grateful Giant Bomb's comment sections aren't like Youtube's; common sense doesn't even exist there.

The aiming works differently than in the DS FPS. The DS FPS games worked like a keyboard and mouse, but this is more like a trackwheel. To turn here, you have to slide the lower screen and then tap it again to stop.

Console third person shooters do just fine? You only have one shoulder button here but if you had both hands on sticks you would also have the shoulder buttons needed to switch between controlling the camera and looking down sights.

@gladspooky: potentially more responsive yes, but if there's no option to bump up the sensitivity a great deal (maybe the screen doesn't have enough touchpoints?) lifting and dragging doesn't sound like responsive. Maybe the levels are linear enough that this is all a nonissue. Either way, I'm sure lifting/dragging is perfectly serviceable and something you forget about an hour in. Like the claw on a psp.

Again, it's probably fine. And traditionally console games on a handheld are definitely fine. It's the inconsistency that irks me.

Brad, you should use stylus for air parts and buttons for ground parts, it actually works very well with a little practice.

I would much rather hold it comfortably and it actually be a portable game. I actually use my portable system outside of my house, something that seems increasingly rare. I think the stand is a shitty compromise and is further proof of the dying dedicated portable market.

Looking at this now, I feel like a lock on mechanic would've improved this experience - and saved your hands - significantly.

In my opinion, any game that hurts to play is a failure. So, regardless of how well produced Icarus is, how long-awaited it's been, and how content packed it is, I will never buy this game. Especially since it's a Nintendo game; they've ALWAYS put playability above all.

Just like my mother, the internet will always find fault with everything regardless. That's the way it is, and I'm gradually learning to accept it. I tend to stop reading the comments beneath QLs if I see they're just becoming pointless rants about staff. I'm here for the good stuff, not to see strangers throw tantrums.

It's great that people offer the GB guys feedback, I've no doubt they take a lot of it on board and as subscribers it's nice to have our voices heard. But if it gets to the point where you repeatedly find yourself quivering with silent rage then maybe you should just breathe, take a step away from the monitor and find another site more suited to your tastes. If you think you can do a better job than the GB staff then send them your CV, or start your own site.

Anyways, this game looks like a big old mess. I was intrigued as to what they would do with the Kid Icarus IP, but this just seems a bit disappointing.

This actually looks okay. I'm kind of tempted to try it, although the fact that you need to play it on a stand to mitigate wrist cramps is kind of absurd. At that point they should've just made it a Wii game

@newfire:

Yeah, that's how you controlled shooters on the DS, you didn't need a stand...however it was a bitch playing any of them (especially Metroid Prime) for more than 30 minutes at a time, besides the fact that there weren't really any good shooters for the DS anyway. The DS was an innovative piece of hardware, so it makes sense that trying to shoehorn probably the most overused game formula onto it didn't really turn out the best results.

Also, I could be wrong, but I believe there are metroids as enemies in this game because they appeared on the original Kid Icarus for NES, I think even before the original Metroid. Either way, I know they were in there.

And the guy talking about using your thumb instead of a stylus was right. For the original DS at least, there was some sort of lanyard that attached to the DS that had a weird small piece of plastic for use with your thumb that could take the place of the stylus and apparently not fuck up your touch screen. I almost got one of these but it was an official Nintendo product (expensive) so I don't know if it was useful or not.

But I'm not defending the game. Looks like it has cool features but also looks incredibly tedious. I may end up getting a 3DS but I'm not interested in this.

EDIT: This whole post isn't directed at you, newfire, just the first paragraph, ha. The rest of it was in response to the video, in case 300 other users here haven't already pointed out why there are metroids in this game.

Wow! You can totally tell from the menus that this game was made by the same team that made Super Smash Bros Brawl.
