Twitch still hasn't updated the name from the Giant Bomb database so every stream I've seen of this game has had to use "Need for Speed 2017 (working title)" which is unfortunate.

During the first minute of video, when Jeff was driving off road, the screen has this super obnoxious shake to it. Like a super annoying judder. I thought something was wrong with the video at first lol. Nope just the game.

Ghost Games will absolutely be shut down in the next few months. Probably after XMAS.

Need for Speed is one of EA's flagships, you mess it up, you're out of here.

I can understand microtansactions all going to loot boxes, clearly publishes have enough data that people are willing to pay for them, I can tolerate them. But why the hell are we all of a sudden making natural progression in the game also have to be a shitty lootbox system? I was one of those crazy people who liked The Crew, and one of my favorite things about it was seeking out activities that would give me the upgrades I wanted. Now in order to progress you literally just grinding any activity, removing the need to explore the full game, and at the end you still possibly wont end up getting the stuff that you want. Gambling with money is tolerable if it is optional, but making gambling my time an essential part of the games design is a fucking deal breaker.

I get that it's not super arcadey but it feels weird hearing Brad say Forza Horizon is serious about itself.

It's pretty goofy. But he's right we need something to fill a Burnout sized hole in our hearts.

I don't get why they get this wrong so often. Like they could license a story, or even vaguely base a game on one and it would be awesome. Also, if the handling was more realistic(challenging) this could stand more on its own. Like if someone made a challenging street racing game based roughly on Initial D it would be totally awesome, and everyone would get it (literally too).

I like the look, I like the music, I hate the guts.

My stance with NFS for the last 7 years.

WHY lock customization behind arbitrary game goals instead of locking individual parts? Oh, right. Each car probably has two or three variations in each category.

WHY have stupid cards instead of actual tuning/upgrading to the car itself that makes meaningful handling/performance differences? Oh yeah, Microtransactions baby.

How hard is it to just Remake NFSU2 and give people what they want? Hot Pursuit (2010) is their most well regarded release in the last 10 years.

You're supposed to BUILD on success and strive to improve instead of completely dismantling all of your progress and making a subpar annual that will never be remembered (for all intensive purposes this is an annual).

This is clearly made for kids with it's 9-year old dialogue but NFSU2 was also pretty silly with its dialogue, it was a good game though and didn't shove it down your throat during races nor did it take itself too seriously. Also, Sweat drip down my ballz skeet skeet mofucka. Never forget.

I have no idea who this (or the last few games) are for and whom it is that EA wants to love and purchase its Need for Speed games. Meanwhile, I'm over here, EA. I fucking loved NFS Underground, Hot Pursuit, Most Wanted (the first one), Carbon, even ProStreet. I even loved ProStreet. But this shit is a cluelessly awful game for no one.

RACING GAMES. MAKE A RACING GAME AGAIN. I promise I'll even buy a loot box if you just make a racing game again.

This game just looks terrible. As a long time NFS fan I'm genuinely sad about how this franchise is on the verge of rotting into obscurity. This is one of a small number of franchises where literally they can get away with doing the same game over and over again. Just make the Criterion Hot Pursuit title with new vehicles, tracks, and better graphics. BOOM. Multi million unit seller. The problem is that for the last like 5 NFS titles they've tried to reinvent the wheel every time and it never works and, frankly, isn't necessary. Give me old NFS with state of the art graphics and you have my money. This cash grabby loot box bullshit just doesn't work in a game like this. Makes me wonder how difficult it is to get Porsche Unleashed running on Windows 10...

This game just looks boring. It is stuck between being not interesting or fun enough to be good and not being such a train wreck that it is humorous in a flawed way.

@7x_:

I think you pinned down what has always escaped me with why this franchise seems to be going nowhere: They don't build off previous games at all. It's like the freaking Sonic franchise! Just look at the lootbox-bandwagoning replacing actual progression. "Let's try this! Maybe they'll like this!" NFS (as I remember it) seems like one of the simplest games to make design-wise: just make the driving fun.

I don't even think NFSU2 or Hot pursuit were amazing technically/controls-wise but they were fun. It seems like any driving game of late is trying to be super realistic instead of trying to be fun first (mainly just the last 7 years of NFS games). We have established series that maintain hyper realistic handling, I just want to be able to abuse a specific car and setup to drift the entire map.

NFSU2 was one of the first racing games to have the record videos on YouTube and they have millions of views. Forza games have tons of silly videos because people like playing the game and seeing funny/cool stuff. I wonder if the playtesters were like "Yeah the game works it is technically competent but it isnt fu-" "THANKS THATS ALL WE NEEDED YOULL GET YOUR CHECK IN THE MAIL"

At some point NFS lost its way and forgot what the series is all about. And this is coming from someone who thought NFS: High Stakes was one of the greatest racers ever made. That's the difference between this game and AC: Origins. They hit the reset button on that game and went back to the intended formula of the series, while NFS is still trying to get by off of gimmicks.

Yeah, if they catered to the tuning scene, like literally just went through the #JDM or #drift or #cars Tumblr channel and then used that inspiration to remake a focused NSFU2-style game they'd be a lot closer to an interesting game, even with like a silly plot. Its almost like the people making these games are totally unaware of that world like they didn't do 10 minutes of research.

Imagine NFS set in Japan with like highway racers and touge, and just totally center it on that world. Like Wangan Midnight / Initial D / NFSU2 mashup. Instead of having like offroad races and trucks and supercars, and all this stuff trying to cater to every single person imaginable. There are so many good ideas out there to pull from, it is almost an upsettingly missed opportunity.

Last NFS I truly enjoyed was OG Most Wanted and I feel like in terms of raw fun its been downhill ever since the peak of Underground 2. Hell the original batch of games had this cartoonish creative wonder to them with goofier track designs and a bigger focus on the most top of the line cars imaginable.

I feel its been a long loooong time since EA understood what made NFS good, what made it fun. No one wants all this story bullshit or open world nonsense. People want Mario Cart but with real cars and no powerups. That's all you fucking have to make, some awesome tracks that can be driven on with awesome cars that handle like fun arcadey infinite-drift no-slide video game cars should. WHY IS IT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND EA.

Man, I feel like loudly objecting every time people wax enthusiastic about Burnout Paradise, but I get why people think it's the best one I suppose (even though it so isn't). Maybe if I engaged with the multiplayer more I would feel differently, but it just felt like a game that stripped a lot out that I loved about the series in the first place.

This was kinda what they were trying to do on the 2015 game. They brought in known drivers from the scene, hired artists who work on car mods and asked for a lot of feedback from the community, constantly changing and adding stuff. The game had a silly plot with FMVs and they embraced it. That game was on a good track but needed to be tweaked on the driving controls, rubber-banding and other technical details. It was almost a NFSU3.

Sadly, they didn't realize the problem with the 2015 game was on those details and went like "this didn't sell more because people didn't like the Underground style anymore, let's just try to make Fast and Furious, fuck it".

I completely agree with you. I don't like racing games, I don't even like cars that much. But I loved the Need For Speed games during the Underground/Most Wanted era. They were fun, lot's of fun. The controls were ridiculously arcady but that's why it worked. It felt like I was a driver from an action movie with how easily I could pull off some absurd moves and the progression to unlock cars and mods was nice, I actually felt rewarded when I could get new tweaks to my car.

Just one correction to your comment: Get Low was from the first Need For Speed Underground. Underground 2 was the Riders On The Storm remix and Lean Back.
